Even though it was mostly other learner cars crawling around the roads I got really nervous approaching them, and when a van came past driven by someone who actually knew what they were doing I stopped until it went past. Something that obviously, I couldn't do on a real road.

Getting an actual instructor with a dual-control car is the way to go for sure.
