march: do you listen to music whilst writing?

I don't. At least, not actively, sometimes I may have the radio playing in the kitchen at a low level. To write I need to be in my own bubble and if I get distracted by anything I tend to stop writing completely. I know a lot of people write in coffee shops or in public places, but if I did that I'd end up with maybe all of two words strung together.

I'm very impressed with people who can write something related to a song they're listening to, but it's not a skill I have at all.

today: have you made any progress in any wips today?

I haven't. To be honest, I'm not even sure if I have any WIPs atm. Well, apart from old bandom ones that are over five years old and will probably never be finished.

However, related to the first. James has just gone to work for a late shift, I've done everything that needs to be done and it's a rainy, grey day so I'm going to open Gdocs soon and hopefully start on the winterhawk h/c story. So, fingers crossed.

november: do you have any rituals or requirements for getting in the mood for writing?

I guess the main one is, I need to be on my desktop. I've tried writing other ways in the past, on my iPad or on paper, but it just doesn't work for me. To write I need to be at my desk, with my full-size keyboard and access to gdocs.

I also write much better if I'm alone as I'm distracted really easily. Which is why I don't tend to write to music.

So, if I'm planning to write I'll have the radio or tv turned down low, and have a drink at hand and try to pull my writing bubble around me.

Thinking about it, that probably ties into the fact I don't tend to plan stories, I just think of an idea and start writing, so I need that complete focus to turn the story in my head into actual words on the screen.

I enjoy reading other's responses, too. Though my answers aren't that interesting as the process ones tend to come down to, I just write. Nothing special.

friday: most self-indulgent fic you have ever posted?

I have to admit, a lot of my fic is self-indulgent. It's no secret that I love h/c and I tend to wallow in that love at times. It makes me smile that my first popslash fic was Boxes because characters I love being homeless and dealing with angst while having a found family was a perfect way to announce what I love in terms of writing/fun.

Since then I've written so much h/c, both physical and mental, with characters being involved with plane crashes, selling themselves on the streets, very often being homeless, shot, bruised and sick. So yeah, I can do self-indulgence well.

I'm torn about which one is the most self-indulgent between the bandom story Blurring the Truth and the Lies which had the working title of 'Coma Pete' where Pete Wentz was in a crash which resulted in him being in a coma in hospital where he was cared for by the nurse Mikey Way. It was ridiculous and angsty and I still love it.

Or the plane crash story The Trails That I Follow which had people losing their memories, broken limbs being set with branches, Mikey carrying his brother, Bob almost dying. Any h/c cliche I threw in there and enjoyed
doing so.

Really, I'm shameless about writing self-indulgent stuff, and will always be grateful they actually get read.

But, I did post for Snowflake earlier this year, so that will be these

I still think true drabbles are really hard to do. It's why I'm impressed with you and the people who take part in the drabble exchange.

I always enjoy reading about writing and how differently people go about it. So, "minutes" and "september", if you don't mind me asking two questions.

I can't actually share it as it was sent via DM. But, when I first posted Tints of Rainbow Hue, I received the most lovely message from someone who had struggled with depression also. They told me how the story had touched them and gave them hope that there was a light at the end of the tunnel, and if Gerard had got there they could, too.

That blew me away, both what they said and the fact they'd shared something so personal. It's a comment I never would have expected to receive, and I'll treasure it always.

minutes: how long does it normally take you to complete a fic?

Thinking back, I've been able to write some stories within a day, but those will always be short, usually less than 2k. Plus, that doesn't happen that often, but when it does I love the flow of words.

The longest it's ever taken me was months. You'd think that would be for When Days which is the largest story I've written, but it was actually Sound Tracking, and simply because of the beta reading process.

If we're taking complete to mean actually posted, the beta reading and editing will always add on at least an extra week, more if it's long.

Editing Sound Tracking was like pulling teeth, Nopsued is an excellent beta, but won't let anything go and I must have rewritten one battle scene at least five times. I mean, it was very much worth it in the end as in terms of writing, ST is up there as one of my best, but at some points, I could have easily deleted the whole thing when I got yet more edits to do.

Which is why it's sometimes frustrating to get more comments/kudos on the quick things than something I've slaved over.

Sometimes I wish I was a faster writer and could churn things out, but I doubt I ever will. So, thinking of averages, I'd say between 3-4 weeks for anything
midlength 10- 20k for the writing, then added beta and editing times on top of that.

Wenchpixie also picked September so I'll copy the answer to that.

Sound Tracking is a fantastic story! But yeah, I can definitely understand how frustrating it must have been to have to edit and edit. And how sad it feels that stories like that never seem to get as much feedback as the short little thing that wasn't even beta-ed.

I think I remember when you got that comment on Tints. It certainly sounds like the sort of comment you'll treasure forever.

This is so lovely - I have Argentumlupine's podfic of Tints 'verse and I listen to it fairly often. It's a wonderful story (and the performance in the podfic is one of my favourites)
