“Hemmy!” Seconds later and Pete is tumbling out of the bus, bare footed and looking concerned. “Hemmy, stop!”
Hemmy doesn’t stop. Instead he runs faster, drool flying from his mouth as he’s caught in the thrill of the chase, following Bunny as she makes for their target. A tree that stretches over a small pond.
“Bunny!”
“Hemmy!”
They’re close behind, and Hemmy is glad to wiggle through the fence, snarling as he leaps at the tree, his nails digging into the bark as Bunny sits high above, looking calm and collected, and winking once when both Pete and Mikey arrive.
“Hemmy, stop!”
Pete grabs hold of Hemmy’s collar, and pulls. Which is fine, Hemmy’s role is over now, all he has to do is watch as Bunny tries to prove she really is a Way, over dramatic to the extreme.
“Look at her, she’s terrified.” Mikey is standing at the foot of the tree, hair flopping into his eyes as he looks up at Bunny, who’s clinging to a branch, her hair sticking up on end, and looking nothing more than she’s about to jump out of her own skin. “You need to go get her.”
“What?!” Pete keeps one hand on Hemmy’s back, crouched over as he looks up at Mikey. “She got up there, she can get down.”
“She’s frightened.” Mikey doesn’t even look at Pete, just keeps watching Bunny, his shoulders hunched and mouth curled down.
Pete’s hand stills, and Hemmy can’t help a snort of happiness, because he knows Pete, knows how much he cares for Mikey, and that extends to climbing trees for him, like some kind of cat saving hero.
