(no subject)

There's some crazy stuff going on in the nsync fandom just now. Sometimes I think that fandom just wants to destroy itself, it's so easy to lose sight of why you're a fan in the first place. I've seen it in every fandom I've been in to one extent or another.

There's always something, like in TS there seems to be this void between the slash and gen fans. I just don't get it. If you don't want to read slash or gen that's fine, but there's no reason to look at fans on the so called other side with suspicion. I'm bi fictional but on one list I've felt so uncomfortable as slashers were dismissed as seeing things that weren't there, always pushing slash etc. Then there's the whole blair/jim babe thing that drives me nuts. I've been in TS for about 2 years now and I can predict when the huge 'well Jim's a closed off idiot who repressed Blair' or 'Blair has no respect for Jim' arguments will erupt. You'd think that fans of TS would be able to get along, and I'd say mostly they do, but I've seen fights onlist that baffle me.

I've been driven to screaming point on the MX boards because so many people hate certain characters. Just tell me how you can post on a board that Brennan/Shalimar any of them should die and be a fan of the show? You can't! MX is a *team* show. Yes, like some characters better than others but don't hate. When people are posting that Brennan should die can't they remember the first episodes? When he allows Jesse the time to phase and shots through him, or the whole wedding scene 'what no hug?' or in 'Whose Woods..." Jesse holding Brennan's head in his lap when he was knocked out. Or in Russian Roulette when Jesse risks his life to get the pushka and later when they're there supporting Brennan when he thinks he can't charge up then blasts the whole damn computer system? Can the fans not remember how they felt as they watched as the place exploded and the whole team walking out, dressed to kill. That was Mutant X. Brennan, Jesse, Emma, Shalimar and Adam. And to want one of that team to be gone is pretty pathetic in my eyes.

This is getting to be all about MX and I didn't mean it to be. I'm just pissed how fans want to attack the thing that they say they love so much. No one knows what's happening with JC's album, no one knows what Justin said/did/wants to do. So why fight about it?

You're a fan, it doesn't matter of what, sparkly dancing boys, mutants, sentinel and guides, mounties, pirates, super heros, spacemen, FBI agents, rat bastards...anything. Just enjoy it and stop the in fighting.

amen

Thanks.

Amen to that! The 'fan' in fandom doesn't *have* to derive from 'fanatic'...

The Andromeda and Mutant X fans on the boards scream about how Tribune never pays attention to what the fans want. To which I add, if they stopped screaming for blood every time something they dislike happens, Tribune will be much more receptive to them...

Amen to that!

I know, I wrote a BIG post before Tribune pulled the boards that going to the MX boards was akin to monkeys flinging feces at each other, and no wonder no one at Tribune gave a rats ass about what the fans thought if they were going to act like such hostile idiots. It's depressing. No wonder Victor doesn't do fan con appearances. Probably afraid some idiot would attack him, since everything they don't like about the show is all HIS fault.

It's people like that that give fandom a bad name.

Yeah, I just love how everything wrong with the show (half of which I never even noticed or cared if I did) is Victor or Victoria's fault. As if they have 100% say in which characters the writers use, and how.

Brennan and Shal do tend to steal the spotlight, but that's as much character as anything. It's in the nature of group dynamics that some people draw more attention than others, by being more outgoing, more flamboyant, whatever, and others simply blend into the background more. Together, they balance each other out...

One of the things I like about Mutant X is that they blend that way. Each one can carry a whole scene or ep alone just as well as they can with the others. I'm afraid of what will happen with that next season, with Lauren gone and Karen signing on, but I'm reserving judgement until I see what they do. It certainly sounds like they've got a hell of a story arc lined up...

And, of course, in the Andromeda fandom, how *dare* you say anything bad about Kevin Sorbo. Or, conversely, anything good. *rolls eyes* Though, in that instance, I will agree that the heavy focus on Dylan interferes with the quality of the show.

I feel bad for Kevin, though, because as the star and a producer, he's Target Number One for fan ire... It's bad, too - I've seen people kicked off lists after throwing more-or-less unprovoked public hissyfits that someone dared be unhappy with Kevin Sorbo and his work as a producer. *rolls eyes*

Lest this end on a completely unhappy note, though, I will also say that, despite the odd bad moment, I have had *so* much fun in my various fandoms that it's unreal. I've met tons of new friends I never would have otherwise, and come to have much more faith in myself and my abilities. I've had cool dicussions on things like philosophy and physics, and hopefully learned a thing or two from them.

Delving into fandom has made me friends from all over the place, taught me things I never would have thought to learn, helped me improve myself, and in general given me a fun sandbox to go play in. Most importantly, it's helped me see that my ambition to be a published writer is *not* beyond my reach, by any means.

Now, see, *that* is what fandom is for...

Exactly! Far too many people forget that.

The Andromeda and Mutant X fans on the boards scream about how Tribune never pays attention to what the fans want

I don't think some fans realised how privileged they were to have someone from the show willing to talk to them. If I was ( was it Seth?) I would have left the boards within weeks. Some of the things posted were vicious. I'd never say that people don't have the right to complain, they do, but the way you do it is important.

I was annoyed at some of the things that they complained about too, I disliked S2 in a lot of ways, but to post ways that the characters should be killed...that's insane.

First, I totally second what you said. Well done.

Second, about the There's some crazy stuff going on in the nsync fandom just now.

What's happening exactly? I saw this mentioned several times on different of my friends' LJs, and now I'm definitely curious. I meant to ask in the mail I sent you this morning, and of course I forgot *sigh*

Thank you. I was just sitting last night, all the crap about Justin and JC was exploding and I got pissed. Yeah I know, unusual for me *g*

What's happening exactly?

This is the brief notes because to explain everything would take days.

You'll know that Justin released an album, he's toured and basicly he's hot property just now. JC has also done an album, and he has a contract with Jive ( the company that represents nsync and Justin)Jive thought JC's stuff was great when he first showcased it, but they promoted Justin and his album and not JC. The release date for JC's album keeps getting pushed back, its had multiple dates now. Some of the fandom thinks this is because Jive don't want to promote both Justin and JC, because of money, divided interest etc. Add in that some people seem to hate Justin and think he's breaking up nsync and you have the basis of a huge fandom war.

Yesterday someone posted that they had a source who said the reason JC's album had been pushed back again was Justin had been asked if he wanted to do a club tour, but if he did that Jive couldn't back JC's album as well. Apparently Justin said he wanted to tour, therefore dissing JC. Link is here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/sleepygirl08/176248.html) if you want to see.

Then watch the fandom go boom as people say what a wanker Justin is, even though *no one* knows what's going on in reality.

I try and keep out of it. Despite my Chris lust I love them all, and they love and admire each other and that's the important thing.

*shakes head* I'm always baffled by some people's stupidity. How can they get riled up for *this* kind of thing is beyond me!

Apparently, they have way too much time on their hands and not enough interesting things in their lives if they can actually become so passionate, read so stupid with things like that!

Tell me about it. There's not one bit of evidence that says this is true but it didn't stop people jumping on the rumour.

Agree. They should be doing something interesting like writing pretty boys having sex not arguing about things. Talking of which, pretty boys having sex are calling me to go write them ;)

TS is one fandom I really want to get into right now, but can't, because I'm scared of it. It reminds me all to much of SG already, so my plan is to stick to reading from the recs pages out there, stay away from the mailing lists and main archives, and maybe write some when I feel like it. Sometimes fandom can contaminate people, and not in a good way!

scared by fandom

[identity profile] patk.livejournal.com 2003-09-16 12:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Scared of TS-fandom? Why? *g* Compared with what's going on in some other fandoms, TS-fandom is a really *cozy* one. *g*

I'm in it for three years by now and on a lot of mailing-lists. And I'm still pretty much alive and well. *g*
