I'm seriously thinking of signing up for hurtcomfortex But I need to study how to take part a bit more first. I've never taken part in exchanges like yuletide where you nominate etc, so it all seems a little intimidating atm.

Yesterday I wrote Umbrella Academy fic, posted it at AO3 and got over 100 kudos overnight. Talk about an exploding fandom. I also got a gentle comment reprimand that I hadn't tagged appropriately, which was completely justified and I immediately changed things and all was well. It's one thing I need to change in terms of writing now I'm moving into new fandoms. In bandom, I hardly tag at all and that has to change, especially with things like incest. But yeah, it was fun just writing after getting an idea and then posting. I did consider getting it beta read, but it was short and I self-edited a few times, so for this time didn't. Though it's not something I really like doing, so for anything longer I'll be bothering my beta.

Though looking at the UA fics today I saw someone who used the tags to say people who wrote incest were weird and gross. I have no problem with people disliking incest fic, but there's a time and place to state your opinions and that's not in tags.

Other than that, while James has been out with our nephew I've tidied the garden a little, dried two washes on the line and read lots, caught up on some comments and have written more of my h/c bingo mini challenge. I may even finish it in time. Imagine that, winning an actual challenge. Madness!

It does look like an excellent challenge. I've emailed someone who I think could help with sign-ups. I'm sure it's not as difficult as it looks but I remain puzzled.

I'm blown away by the amount of kudos, and looking at AO3 the gen stories are getting ridiculous amounts of kudos too. Some in the 700s within days.

Which ties into the tag hate a little in that I understand a lot of people won't like incest fic and will go for gen instead. Which is fine, it's things like that tag hate I don't understand.

That's a shame yours hasn't come yet, especially as it was you that linked to it in the first place. I was surprised mine came so soon, I had no idea what had arrived when I first saw the envelope.

A HC fest sounds like a very you thing, but the whole sign up process sounds really confusing to me!

The h/c fest sounds perfect for me, especially as I now have a handful of handful of fandoms I'm comfortable writing in. But the sign-up process still puzzles me. I'm glad it's not just me that is baffled.

Tags are definitely not the place to express your opinions of other writers! It might be worth contacting the AO3 abuse team because it sounds like a break of the TOS to me.

The challenge looks fantastic, and I've just fired off an email to someone who'll hopefully walk me through how to actually join.

Frausorge mentioned AO3 tags are not like tumblr tags, so I assume that's where the stupid tags came from. They're really not needed, though. I'd never thought about the breaking of TOS side of things, but it should apply because it is being negative to other writers.

The fandom is getting crazy amount of fic atm. Seeing the numbers jump up at AO3 is dizzying. It's a shame you can't watch, though. I hope you can soon, as it really is a great show.

I thought the comment came over as a bit high handed in its tone - or very tumblresque at least... not to say that it wasn't a reasonable ask overall, but the way it was put made me roll my eyes a bit. You dealt with it charmingly though. UA does look a bit like it's bringing out a bit of moral policing that I lost much will to read back in SPN, but without the background in dl;dr or YKINMKBYKIOK that fandom had then. Hopefully it'll die a death soon enough, it's so dull and shows such a lack of awareness that other people are not the poster's to control. I think it's possible to report abusive tags, which might be worth doing.

It does. And thankfully someone has taken pity on me and replied to my email asking how on earth to actually join.

Yeah, I had a bit of an eye roll at the explanation of / v & but ultimately I had made a mistake in tagging and the comment could have been much worse, so I didn't take offence.

After being in bandom forever, where people tend to respect choices, it's been a bit of a surprise to see the moral policing that's springing up in UA. I'll never understand why some people feel the need to be vocal about their dislikes, especially in such a public way.

It hadn't occurred to me that you could report tags, but it makes sense. I'll have to see if I can find the fic again.

I know, right?! I was just about to say I have a whole 6 days to finish and post, then realised Feb is a short month. Oops.
