Hello there, Mikey Way. Please keep posting pics from one of my favourite eras where you look hot as all hell. I do appreciate it a lot.
We've been to see Joker today. What a film, gritty, unnerving, disturbing and if Joaquin Phoenix doesn't get a handful of awards I'll be very surprised.
We were supposed to meet Corey afterwards for a catch-up and something to eat, but he's not well and is working tonight so I told him to stay in bed and we'll meet up on his next day off instead.
Came home and stopped off to buy a traditional ox sandwich from the Feast. Personally, I'm always dubious if it is actually ox, and James always complains that they're dry. But, it's a Feast tradition, even if I haven't had one since I was a kidlet.
It's the fireworks tonight, but I think I'll just watch them from the front doorstep. I'm tired and a bath followed by my pjs and wrapped in a fluffy dressing gown watching the fireworks from home sounds more appealing than battling the crowds.
I'm trying to talk myself out of buying this dress. It has foxes on it and I love it a lot. But at the same time, I really don't need more dresses. But, foxes! There's also one with pandas on in the sale....

enjoy the fireworks from your doorstep - avoiding crowds sounds like a grand idea to me

Date: 2019-10-07 06:03 pm (UTC)I joined the mailing list for the site so I could keep track of the dress, and they sent me a 10% off code. Temptation everywhere!
Thank you. I'm thinking it's the best idea, it was already packed when I was down getting the sandwich, and would only get worse. Plus, dark and cold. Staying home is the way to go.

Date: 2019-10-10 01:01 pm (UTC)Watching the fireworks from the doorstep was a good decision. I may have missed some of the ground displays but I also missed the crowds and cold, so that was a win.

Date: 2019-10-07 07:59 pm (UTC)I hope Corey feels better, and that the fireworks are pretty! At home in fluffy dressing gown sounds the perfect way to watch them.
I am not going to help with self-restraint on that dress. It's amazing.

Date: 2019-10-10 01:00 pm (UTC)The fireworks were good, short but good. I'm glad I decided to watch them from home.
The dress was bought and is now hanging behind me :D

Wow, ok, not helping but that dress is gorgeous! I can see why you'd be tempted ;) Plus, I'm sure you'd look gorgeous in it!
PS: did you know that Santiago Cabrera plays in ST:Picard?? I had no idea and only found out when watching the latest trailer... I was already quite on board with that new show but even more so now!

Date: 2019-10-10 11:50 am (UTC)I have the dress! I don't know about gorgeous but I really like it. I'm glad everyone got in on the enabling.
I did know that, but only because I follow him on Insta. Otherwise, he doesn't seem to be mentioned as much. Though that's understandable when Seven, Data and Picard are in the trailer. Like you I'm really looking forward to the show, and his inclusion has surely helped that. It's so good to be looking forward to something again.

And fireworks from a distance without crowds sound excellent.
That dress is super cute.

Plans are to meet up with Corey on Sunday. It means I need to get a bus as James is at work during the day and it's pointless him coming home to drive back to Newcastle. But, a bus again!

The whole ox roasting thing sounds like quite a cool tradition. Pity the actually sandwiches aren't anything special.
Fireworks should always be enjoyed from a warm place, preferrably your own house!
It's an adorable dress so I'm not suprised at all that you succumbed to its lure.

Date: 2019-10-13 11:31 am (UTC)He is feeling better, which is good as I'm off to meet up with him and James in Newcastle soon.
Yeah, I like the tradition. Though the local DJ on the radio nearly caused issues this year as he said they'd be given away free. Which yeah, is what happened way back in the day and what started the tradition, but not what happens now. If you want one now you need to pay for the privilege.
It's a lovely dress. Just as nice in reality than on the page.

Date: 2019-10-26 05:54 pm (UTC)You know it's the end of an era when I unfollowed MikeyWay on IG. *pours one out for my past crush on him*
Part of it is that I'm not really on IG (too many platforms to keep up with and that's the one where I'm the least sociable). I feel that another part was him getting married and having a babbu. Something about that just kinda cooled my fever for him. Quelle tristesse, really.
Joker was a movie attempting to both sell the most superficial idea and play as if it wasn't interested in the idea. I found it to be way pretentious (though, yes, Joaquin's acting was really good like everyone else has said. I don't think he deserves all the awards, but ymmmv). Also, it didn't help that the director was such a jackass while promoting it.
I saw it for free and found it to be way derivative and fake ~deep.
FTR, I didn't hate the film, but overall feel that the praises for it are way off base.

Date: 2019-11-10 04:51 pm (UTC)Mikey's insta is so domesticated it's going to be weird seeing him on stage again. I'm used to Mikey the dad and husband now, and not Mikey the bass player. I still think he's great, but doubt my own crush will build to its former heights.
I do enjoy your film thoughts, which I've told you before but will again. I never heard anything about the director being a jackass. Not that I don't believe you, just that sort of stuff tends to pass me by.
I do think Joaquin put in an amazing performance though, and still think he'll get some awards.
Funnily enough, though. Thinking back now, while I can remember feeling uncomfortable while watching, at this point I'm struggling to remember more than a few scenes.

Date: 2019-11-11 07:13 pm (UTC)Okay, the Joker stuff...
So, the movie had its premiere at a film festival late summer and won the grand prize. That's around the time that the pushback against it began in social media. Some ppl were saying that the movie could potentially glorify white angry dudes and give them a bigger platform that agreed with the idea of violence being the best thing ever. I'm over-simplifying but that's the gist of it.
The media took notice of this and amplified that notion of the movie being DANGEROUS and CONTROVERSIAL. And they tied this narrative to the 2012 mass shooting that occurred at a Batman screening in Colorado.
Meanwhile, no one (except for folks who had attended the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival) had seen the movie at this point.
AND THEN THE PRESS TOUR BEGAN. Which turned out to be something of a disaster. At one point, Joaquin walked out of an interview because he was perplexed to be asked about the (potential) correlation between the violence in the movie + its message vs. the online backlash. Per what I remember, Joaquin did v. minimal press afterwards and things got so dire that WB's PR department didn't allow a single interview during the US premiere of the movie in late September. IIRC, photographers were allowed but no one asked Joaquin et al any questions.
MEANWHILE, Todd Phillips (the director of this movie as well as raunchy comedies like the Hangover trilogy) went in to the HARD defensive. He said that he purposely moved away from a genre he loved (comedy) because everyone was being too PC and comedy was dead (which isn't true).
He also said that he had a v. specific idea for what kind of movie he wanted to make (w/r/t the Joker) so he 'fooled' the studio to give him money for a comicbook movie...and then went about stripping all of the comicbook element off that because comicbook movies are trash (paraphrasing but he really did put down the genre).
Among the last things he said was in line of him being an ARTISTE and folks (who hadn't seen the movie) were whiny brats.
So, his attitude seriously put me off. I totes get why he felt like he had to stand up for his movie since some ppl went way off about how the movie was THE WORST (TM)...but the ppl commenting the loudest hadn't seen the movie.
HOWEVUH, there's no reason why he couldn't have just said "listen, give it a chance. Maybe it's your thing, maybe it's not your thing but I hope ppl approach this film with an open mind", etc.
ETA: I think Joaquin will get Best Actor nominations in all the awards, but I really doubt he'll get the Oscar. This year is super packed with really good performances and, as good as his might've been in the Joker, it wasn't the only good one.

I was going to say Todd sounds like a bit of a dick, but the more I think about it the more I think he's a huge dick. You're right, there's nothing wrong at all with defending a film you've directed but the way he did so was ridiculous. It sounds like he far more damage than the actual movie itself.
I'm really interested in the awards season this year. I still think Joaquin played a fantastic part, but I agree, there were a lot of other standouts, too.
Can I ask, do you work somehow in media or are you just interested in the film industry? You've told me so much info this year gone about promo and stuff going on in movies and I really love that you do. I know I like different things to you at times, but you're still my film guru.

Date: 2020-01-03 07:07 pm (UTC)One of the most exciting things about this season is that there aren't any definite faves. Like, last year it was ALL ABOUT the gorram A Star is Born (which I loathed), Green Book (same), and ROMA (which was pretty good.) There's a certain, I dunno, chaotic vibe to what is still in the running.
Can I ask, do you work somehow in media or are you just interested in the film industry?
LOL, no. Something like 20 years ago, I did dreamed about becoming a film critic but Life got in the way. Mostly, I really love movies and am endlessly fascinated by the behind-the-scenes stuff as well. I am deffo far from a film industry insider.
