Feb. 23rd, 2020 05:29 pmI don't know why but I had the worst sleep last night. My Fitbit said I had just over three hours, which is about five hours down on the time I usually get. It did mean I got caught up a bit on Masterchef USA though as it was easy watching as I lay wide awake in the middle of the night.
I was planning on going to the cinema today but suspect I would have done a James and been out for the count within minutes. As it is, I can see an early night on my horizon. Plus, we'd been to the cinema yesterday to see The Call of the Wild -- which was pretty okay, so no burning need to go today.
We'd gone to the Durham Odeon and when we got there found out the fire and ice festival was on, which included ice sculptures around the town centre. Going to the cinema we passed the DeLorean from Back to the Future while outside the cinema itself, a load of chocolate bars had been encased in an ice block and people were encouraged to dig them out via chipping at the ice or melting it somehow. You can see that here. We were at an early show so people had just started to dig at it but I suspect by the afternoon the chocolate would be coming out easier.
We would have gone to see more of the ice sculptures but it started to sleet when we left the cinema and I hate that stuff, and sleety cobbles really wouldn't be good for James to walk on, so we came home and hunkered in for yet another stormy weekend.
Tinker comes home tomorrow. I was getting worried that they'd lost her as it'll be two weeks on Tuesday but apparently the animal cremation place only does pickups/drops off once a week, so the receptionist promised as soon as she's there she'll phone. When no doubt I'll cry again, but I'll feel better that she's home where she belongs.
I've just finished Strange Love as recced by
glitteryv and enjoyed it so much. I actually took a break in the middle of reading, not because of the book but because of life, but got back into it the last few days and have been finishing it off as part of my bath and book routine, and much prunage happened as a result. I really do recommend it, and Luce's recs as they're great.

Date: 2020-02-24 06:36 am (UTC)The ice sculptures sound cool, but I don't think I'd be dedicated enough to spend time scraping for chocolate. The DeLorean would be awesome to see recreated though.
I hope it will be a comfort having Tinker back with you. ♥

Yeah, me either. Especially when we were there and there were still inches of ice to get through.
I feel better that Tinker is home.

Date: 2020-02-26 07:11 pm (UTC)It was a cool festival, I enjoyed watching everyone had at the sculpture for the chocolate but suspect it would be a while before any would be reached.
I hate sleet :(

Date: 2020-02-26 06:00 pm (UTC)How cool with ice sculptures but what a pity it started to sleet so you didn't get so see all of them. I've always wanted to see some myself but I've never had the opportunity.

Date: 2020-02-26 07:10 pm (UTC)The ice sculptures we managed to see where amazing. Sadly, as you know, Durham isn't a good place to go when it's slippy and you have mobility issues. Which is a shame as they had some really amazing stuff, including a Tardis.

YAYS FOR LIKING STRANGE LOVE. It's SUCH a fun read. Did you love Snaps or did you LOVE Snaps? ;)

Date: 2020-02-27 05:12 pm (UTC)Honestly, you're not missing anything by not seeing Call of the Wild. I mean, it had some nice moments, but also a lot of dubious special effects and a narration that could send someone to sleep.
Snaps was amazing, and so dog. I loved him guarding the plants and how utterly loyal he was always, despite the fact his attention was so scattered.
I also really liked how the alien and alien sex was actually alien and not just a nod to something with a big bulbous head and spindly legs. I was sad when the story ended and I'd happily read more about that world.
