June Something day 3
Jun. 3rd, 2021 10:00 amDay 3: What's a favorite, or at least memorable fandom meeting/interaction that you've had?
This is easy.
Setting the scene. Camp Sparkle is a gathering for popslash fans. At least, that's how it started, most of the people who go there now have moved on fandom wise, but we all started as popslashers and still maintain the love for the boybands Nsync and BSB. Camp Sparkle is held in the UK, a weekend the first year then expanded to a week and happened yearly until COVID hit.
The lava lamp story is an infamous story in the popslash fandom. It's full of purple prose, terrible sex scenes and the main plot point is Chris Kirkpatrick from Nsync gets fucked by an apparently switched on Lava Lamp. You'll note how Lava Lamp is capitalised, this is because Lamp became a character in some parts of the fandom, with Chris/Lamp having its own archive at one point. Even now, years later parts of that story are burned into my mind, including JC's turgid meat and the amazing line The only thing that remained outside of Chris' full ass was the cord to plug in the lamp.
To get back to the question. The story tends to be read at Camp Sparkle, mostly on an evening when many pixi stixs have been consumed and sleep is a bit lacking and things get a bit surreal. While I can remember many readings the best was the year it was acted out by various popslashers, and included props such as a bottle of alcohol and the Nsync marionettes watching from the sidelines. I don't think I've ever laughed as much and it's something I'll never forget.
Staying with popslash. It was lovely to see the news that Lance and Michael are going to be dads to twins.
It's hard to believe that the man he is today is the same one the fandom banded together and sent flowers to when he came out. That feels like a lifetime away.
Changing the subject completely. I'm considering joining
fandomgiftbox. It looks nicely low pressure and a fun way to keep writing now I've actually started again.
ETA: James has been at the garage since 8:30 and just phoned to say it'll be another hour. Apparently, the radiator tank had a crack and wasn't holding pressure properly which is why the engine was overheating. Thankfully they had the part so a hire car wasn't needed, just a long boring wait.
