What the hell thought it was a good idea for Corey to join cubs?

You don't want to know how long I've been sewing those stupid badges on, really you don't and there's still two more to go. My fingers are full of needle holes, the damn thread won't stop falling out of the needle and at one point I managed to sew the arm to the body. ARGHHH! Then they've gone on lop sided so people will look at his jumper and know his mam is useless at sewing, which is true because I am! Stupid badges, stupid badges that I had to look up the stupid positioning for because every stupid damn badge has it's own stupid little place.

*Deep breath*

I can do this, two to go that's all.

You can do it--you're almost done! Yay, you!

And: people who actually think less of you as a parent for something stupid like sewing are beneath contempt, and not worthy of your attention. *nods firmly* My sister is the best mom I know, and if you mentioned her name and sewing in the same sentence, her husband would fall down laughing.

Thanks for the encouragement, I was nearly done at that point, then sadly the next one that I did ended up on a diagonal instead of straight so I had to unpick it...sigh. But they're done now.

Thanks for the story about your sister, it's nice to know I'm not the only one who hates sewing. As for me I'm going to buy some special glue stuff, that way I can throw that damn needle and thread away.

I've never even heard of that sticky stuff. Will have to look for it when my son gets his next karate patch. ;-) (see? I'm in the same boat) . . .

because there will be a next time; he's sure to earn more badges...

Check your local sewing shop. We have a product that is basically a ribbon (inch-wide) of nylon mesh. You know, nylon melts when it gets hot. So...

You cut a short length to fit under the middle of the badge. Position the badge, with the nylon mesh underneath, then use a hot iron on it until the nylon melts. Now the badge is held from slipping while you sew the stitches around the edges.

It is advisable to use a wet paper towel or paper napkin over the badge+nylon. That way, if the melted nylons runs a bit out from under the badge, it won't get your iron all gunky. The melted nylon will pick up with the paper towel as you peel it back, and there will be no 'unsightly mess'. {g}

Good luck. And take heart - Cory won't remember that his badges were lopsided; he'll remember that you let him have fun and hang out with the friends he made. That makes you a good mam.

Thanks for the ideas and the tips.

It honestly never crossed my mind to get some sticky stuff and now that it's been pointed out I've no idea why I didn't think of it before. Because I tell you those badges wouldn't stay still and ended up so crooked.

Good luck. And take heart - Cory won't remember that his badges were lopsided; he'll remember that you let him have fun and hang out with the friends he made. That makes you a good mam.

and you know, now I can't help but wonder if the boys know how to sew. I bet Chris does, out of necessity. Joey doesn't. Justin makes 'Home Sweet Home' pillows with his mom, I'm sure of it. JC and Lance probably sew pailletes on their clothes together, while gossiping about boys.

That sort of badge is the one type of sewing I use a thimble for, otherwise *ouch*.
Vilene iron-on stuff is good for many things (once you've got the hang of not melting it with the iron,LOL) but does come loose with washing, and may not work except to join two pieces of thinnish fabric- ie problematic for badges, perhaps, especially if you're trying to attach them to a jersey or sweatshirt. What *do* cubs wear these days?
Interlock's suggestion is a good one! Make him self sufficient as regards shirt buttons etc!

Cubs wear thick sweatshirts these day so I'd need something strong. I've been linked to something the scout association sells that should do the job. Sticking the badges on seems a much better option than sewing.

I know that in your part of the world 'jumper' means sweater or something of that nature, but every time you say 'jumper' I have this horrifying vision of you dressing your son up in a jumper, which in my part of the world (in case you don't know, but you probably do) is a dress that little girls wear with a top half like overalls (the same cut, with the little pocket on the chest and two straps that buckle). And so then I just picture Corey going off to Cub scouts dressed like a girl scout and I feel so mortified for him. *laugh*

Then of course I remember that it's not true and I tell myself 'jumper' means sweater, but nevertheless.

And if that doesn't amuse some of the needle pricks away, well, I got nothing else. *laugh*
