Feb. 7th, 2005 03:56 pmWhat the hell thought it was a good idea for Corey to join cubs?
You don't want to know how long I've been sewing those stupid badges on, really you don't and there's still two more to go. My fingers are full of needle holes, the damn thread won't stop falling out of the needle and at one point I managed to sew the arm to the body. ARGHHH! Then they've gone on lop sided so people will look at his jumper and know his mam is useless at sewing, which is true because I am! Stupid badges, stupid badges that I had to look up the stupid positioning for because every stupid damn badge has it's own stupid little place.
*Deep breath*
I can do this, two to go that's all.

Date: 2005-02-07 04:18 pm (UTC)And: people who actually think less of you as a parent for something stupid like sewing are beneath contempt, and not worthy of your attention. *nods firmly* My sister is the best mom I know, and if you mentioned her name and sewing in the same sentence, her husband would fall down laughing.

Date: 2005-02-08 11:31 am (UTC)Thanks for the story about your sister, it's nice to know I'm not the only one who hates sewing. As for me I'm going to buy some special glue stuff, that way I can throw that damn needle and thread away.

Date: 2005-02-07 04:25 pm (UTC)That's what Grammie's are for. ;-) The Childling is in karate and has oodles and oodles of patches.. all of which his Gram has sewn on for us.
Also?

Date: 2005-02-08 11:35 am (UTC)I think if I hadn't found the special sticky stuff his jumper would have gone to his nanna next time. Obviously I'm not made to sew.
Yeah, Chris made a lot of sense.
Thanks :)

Date: 2005-02-08 12:21 pm (UTC)I've never even heard of that sticky stuff. Will have to look for it when my son gets his next karate patch. ;-) (see? I'm in the same boat) . . .
Next time...
Date: 2005-02-07 04:28 pm (UTC)because there will be a next time; he's sure to earn more badges...
Check your local sewing shop. We have a product that is basically a ribbon (inch-wide) of nylon mesh. You know, nylon melts when it gets hot. So...
You cut a short length to fit under the middle of the badge. Position the badge, with the nylon mesh underneath, then use a hot iron on it until the nylon melts. Now the badge is held from slipping while you sew the stitches around the edges.
It is advisable to use a wet paper towel or paper napkin over the badge+nylon. That way, if the melted nylons runs a bit out from under the badge, it won't get your iron all gunky. The melted nylon will pick up with the paper towel as you peel it back, and there will be no 'unsightly mess'. {g}
Good luck. And take heart - Cory won't remember that his badges were lopsided; he'll remember that you let him have fun and hang out with the friends he made. That makes you a good mam.

Re: Next time...
Date: 2005-02-08 11:38 am (UTC)It honestly never crossed my mind to get some sticky stuff and now that it's been pointed out I've no idea why I didn't think of it before. Because I tell you those badges wouldn't stay still and ended up so crooked.
Good luck. And take heart - Cory won't remember that his badges were lopsided; he'll remember that you let him have fun and hang out with the friends he made. That makes you a good mam.
Thank you. Comments like that are always good to hear.

Well, exercise through typing will have them feeling like new in no time, right?

Date: 2005-02-08 11:39 am (UTC)LOL. Yeah, they do feel like new now, complete with scratched down the front, needles are dangerous things, man!

Date: 2005-02-08 12:38 pm (UTC)I should imagine they will have a sewing badge, however until that point Loca clued me into special stuff that's made to stick the badges on which seems a much better option *g*
*Blush* Thank you, that means a lot.

Date: 2005-02-07 05:20 pm (UTC)Vilene iron-on stuff is good for many things (once you've got the hang of not melting it with the iron,LOL) but does come loose with washing, and may not work except to join two pieces of thinnish fabric- ie problematic for badges, perhaps, especially if you're trying to attach them to a jersey or sweatshirt. What *do* cubs wear these days?
Interlock's suggestion is a good one! Make him self sufficient as regards shirt buttons etc!

But...bawhahaa you sewed the arm to the body! lol That's totally something I would do! Don't feel bad I'm no Martha Stewart either.

And if that doesn't amuse some of the needle pricks away, well, I got nothing else. *laugh*

don't sweat the small stuff
Date: 2005-02-08 11:18 am (UTC)when my daughter was about 4 years old, one of my friends bought her a tiny plastic iron and ironing board. when she opened it up, she asked what it was. (she'd never
seen one!)
the dog thinks i'm the best mom in the world.
Re: don't sweat the small stuff
Date: 2005-02-08 12:52 pm (UTC)I love that story about your daughter and the ironing board, proof that all moms aren't domestic goddesses, and thank goodness for that!
I'm sure you're a wonderful mom :)
