Oct. 14th, 2007 08:18 amI've been offline for the last few days. Seems if you don't pay your bill the telephone company will cut you off. Go figure. But on the positive, in that time I've managed to sort out my picture files into a very basic order, and catch up on all my shows I downloaded and most of the ones on the DVR. Of course now I have to go onto a downloading frenzy to catch up. The worst of that? As well as knowing new Criminal Minds and CSI were out there and I couldn't see them. Watching the last two episodes of season one Brothers and Sisters, the channel announcing the new season would begin next year, and me going, NOOOOOOO!!!! You know I'll be hitting the torrents as soon as I post this.
So what else has happened? Corey made the school rugby team. Thinking of which. YAY England! I saw Ratatouille which was amazing, and The Invasion which was a couple of hours of my life I'll never get back. I got my next veggie box, and instead of the parsnips and broccoli got courgettes and a turnip. The courgettes have been roasted and eaten but the most I've used to turnip for is turnip and tattie mash or hollowed out at Halloween. It was Kayleigh's birthday yesterday, but most important. I've got a brand new nephew! He was born late last night, and hasn't got a name yet. ETA: It's Lewis John. I've got a text picture showing him being cuddled by my brother's partner. She looked so happy, and the baby is so tiny . Of course as he was a week overdue he's probably not tiny at all, but he looks it, all scrunched up face and that weird colour babies have when they've just been born. He's gorgeous.
Now I have an hour before rugby, so I'm going to eat my breakfast and catch up a little.

Date: 2007-10-14 12:34 pm (UTC)Re the veggie boxes. Do you find that it works well or do you end up with some stuff that you have no idea what to do with? I'm thinking of signing up for a veggie/fruit box scheme and am curious.

Date: 2007-10-15 01:19 pm (UTC)Well, I've only been getting the boxes for two weeks now, so take this with a pinch of salt, but so far I've used everything I've been sent. I do get some things I've no idea what to do with. If you look back in my journal a week or so you'll see me asking what to do with cabbage. They'd sent a huge one, and apart from boiling it, I was stuck. But I was given a load of cabbage recipes, and to be honest, I'm finding it fun to cook with stuff I normally wouldn't use.
So yeah, I'd say go for it. Then if you get stuck, ask on here. Someone always knows something to cook with ingredients.

Date: 2007-10-15 01:15 pm (UTC)Dude, it took me months to work out which way they were playing when he started rugby last season. They tricked me by playing width ways instead of along the pitch. Silly junior games and their smaller pitches.

Date: 2007-10-14 01:43 pm (UTC)And turnips - they're good grated in salads, or chopped up and in stew, or in mash, or as mash on their own ...
And new baby in the family! (Who is not, dear brain, called John Lewis ...)

Date: 2007-10-15 09:33 am (UTC)I love turnip mash, both on its own and with potato, but I never thought of using it in a salad. Which I should have, as when I was a kidlet my dad had an allotment and I used to love eating those small white turnips, just biting into them like an apple.
Yes, new baby! I'm so looking forward to seeing him :)

Date: 2007-10-14 02:56 pm (UTC)Congratulations Auntie Terri!! (And congratulations to Corey too!!)
Turnips are quite good for lots of stuff! They're a bit sweet and not to strong-tasting so they both combine well with other root vegetables and are good on their own. There's a famous Finnish Christmas dish that's very good - a kind of gratin with turnips and I think, carrots and potatoes.

Thank you!
If Rikes doesn't mention that recipe I'll hit you up for that for sure. I'm enjoying experimenting with all these different vegetables. I mean, if I wasn't getting these boxes no way would I go out and actually buy turnip. But now it's here, I'm having fun how to turn it into something delicious. I hope *g*
