May. 27th, 2012 03:10 pmHappiest of birthdays to
castalie Enjoy your time relaxing this afternoon, and then maybe think about not getting any more older as you're making me feel ancient *g* As a blast from the past the AMs are singing happy birthday to you from their barracks ♥
I've read two really great stories recently.
Can't Touch My Brother by
alpheratz which is Gerard/Mikey, Mikey/Pete where Mikey feels nothing but Gerard's touch.
Get Up and Go by
inlovewithnight A Mikey centric canon story where he runs an ultramarathon.
Both are really fantastic and I loved every word.
Yet again it's another beautiful day. Things in the garden are growing like crazy, and I've been reminded that in such warm weather they need watering like crazy. James is on day shifts so it's early start time, which is fine as it's light when we wake anyway. Though it does mean early nights too. I was watching Game of Thrones the other night and fell asleep on the couch, meaning I had to rewind to see the last few scenes. Though it was a Dani scene so maybe falling asleep was inevitable.
I've been watching Eurovision which was as crazy as always, and been filling in my placeholder BBB scenes and feeling very content about how the story looks now. I need to stop now though as the ironing needs doing and then I'm thinking, maybe a cake later. Some kind of sponge filled with cream and jam. It feels like the right kind of day for that.
Or I might fall asleep on the couch again. Who knows?

Date: 2012-05-27 06:54 pm (UTC)It's good to hear that your garden is growing. We've had warm and sunny weather here too and I'm starting to believe that the rhubarb is planning on taking over the balcony completely - it's growing like mad!
I know you mean a sponge cake but written like that it still makes me imagine a bath sponge filled with cream and jam :-)

Date: 2012-05-28 03:32 pm (UTC)Better you back that than try some of mine. I don't know why but I can't seem to bake a good sponge. They taste nice, I can see air bubbles in the mixture when I put it in the pan. But they always come out really dense. It's a very sad thing.

Rhubarb snapped from the plant, washed and eaten with sugar. Om nom nom. I'm not surprised it's growing fast though, it tends to take over.
Well, that kind of sponge probably would have been better than what I ended up with *g*
How are you today? Any change?

Date: 2012-05-28 04:33 pm (UTC)Oh dear, that sounds bad. Cake failures suck!
No, no change at all unfortunately. At least I have an appointment with a doctor tomorrow - mandatory before getting remitted for an x-ray apparently - and maybe I can get something that will at least mitigate the symptoms a little then. I'm keeping my fingers crossed! And the nurse that took care of my case today was very nice and helpful and nothing at all like the person I'd Friday.

Date: 2012-05-30 03:06 am (UTC)I really dread what's going to be like in a few weeks when Summer kicks in for reals. /o\
The day will come when I sit down to watch Game of Thrones, I'm sure of it.
Ultramarathoner!Mikeyway took me by total surprise. I read it a few days back and I'm still processing it (haven't been able to leave feedback just yet.) 'tis the magic of great fanfic. :)

I really like Game of Thrones, but man it's hard to watch sometimes. I don't know if it's better or worse I've read the books so know what's coming.
Ultramarathoner!Mikeyway is amazing. Night nails him character wise. I know a lot of people won't read because it's gen, or het I guess as he's with Alicia. And that's such a shame.

Date: 2012-06-04 12:32 am (UTC)I guess being spoiled is something that really depends on how invested you are with the show/movie. Example, I'd been hemming and hawing about The Hunger Games (both reading the books and seeing the movie). After nearly 2 years of carefully avoiding plot spoilers, I accidentally clicked on a link that spelled out the entire story for the series. In a way, it kinda killed the oomph to read the books, but now I know that I'll be able to deal with watching the movie.
IIRC, I used to be very much into spoilers (especially during my Buffy and Angel-watching days). Eventually, though, I kinda got frustrated with them after realizing that a lot of the supposed spoilers were so off-target it wasn't funny.
In regards to books, the question becomes how much is changed or omitted in the transition from book to TV screen. I read the first two Dexter books just as the series was about to begin airing. In truth, I liked the show over the books (especially from book 3 on as the series started to have a more pronounced supernatural bent VS. how the show developed its own version of the canon without any extraordinary angles.)
(Opinions, I haz them. /o\)
Re Ultramarathoner!Mikeyway: I have to admit that, other than het!Ray fic--a seriously rare occurrence anyways, I don't like reading about the boys with their wives. *ponders and clarifies* I mean in a sexy times way.
To me Night's fic is Gen (even though it's obvious he's with Alicia) because Mikeyway/Alicia isn't front and center. You can deffo tell that they love each other and will support each other, but there's nothing above a PG-rating happening between them.
I think it's got more to do with the Mikeyway/Alicia thing than the gen rating. Though we're a ship-happy fandom, there are a lot of people who enjoy reading genfic. Of course, that could also be my experience from my corner of the fandom. \o?

Date: 2012-06-06 04:40 pm (UTC)You made me think about why I tack on stuff about how our hot wouldn't be hot for some people and realised it's because so many people think differently to you and make comments like how what's hot for me is a cool day to them or our snow is nothing compared to the fall they get. A lot of friends do that too and don't seem to realise that weather directly relates to the country. So yeah, it's not that hot compared to some really hot state, but it's hot for the UK.
And I'll stop babbling about weather now.
Because I also have thoughts about gen and het. I often spend a lot of time trying to decide how to label when I have a story that reads as gen and yet has a very minor het pairing in the background. It doesn't help that some people are very anti het in the fandom ( not talking you here, but others I've seen who state het is disgusting ) though I suspect those people would shy away from gen too.
Like I've said before, I just wish more people would embrace gen in general. And I have to say, I love talking to you about stuff like this, because even though I know we like different things, for example, cest and stories with the wives having sexy times, I've never felt judged by you, and that's fantastic.

Date: 2012-06-06 11:32 pm (UTC)*nods* Yeah, that's very tricky. Personally, I usually go for the gen tag as long as the fic isn't shippy or goes above a PG-rating. In a way, the kind of fic you're describing is kinda YMMV. I do know there are "purists" for whom Gen means fic that has no pairings at all. *throws hands in the air*

Took me almost a year to discover the anti-het pockets in Bandom. Soon as I realized what was what, I tipped my hat and backed away slowly. As I said before, I'm rarely (if ever) pro-het yet, at the same time, I don't understand the reason behind putting other people's likes down just because they're not the same as yours. (I'm gonna go out on a limb and throw an absolute into the mix)ALL FANDOMS have big enough sandboxes for everyone to come in and play.
I do agree with your observation that anti-het peeps tend to be sort of 'meh' about genfic too (not everyone, but some slashers might fight gen boring since they read slash for the porn.)That's perfectly OK. No one should have to endure reading something that they don't find pleasurable or comforting (especially if they're doing it to "fit in" or whatever.)
Life already has enough up-and-downs for anyone to spend time hating on het or gen (or slash if they're het and/or gen-only peeps.) Again: giant sandboxes.
I love talking to you about this too. It's super groovy to see where we converge and where we don't as well as the reasons why or why not. ^_^ *hugs you*
ETA: One of the first things I learned way back when I first got into Fandom is that what one person might dig, another one will go /o\. Example: I love mpreg (especially when it's well-written)--which makes sense to me 'cause I love uber-crack fic--but I know that's one trope that makes people go DDDDDDD: very quickly.
As for tropes or bulletproof kinks that I don't like or are squicks, as long as it's not something people are pressuring me to read OR shaming me for not reading, then I'm cool. *points at my example* :)
