Feb. 9th, 2015 12:45 pmI really didn't want to get out of bed this morning. It didn't help that somehow I'd managed to mix up James' shifts so until yesterday thought he was off today. Sadly he wasn't so we had to get up at horrible o clock.
But, it's turned into a nice sunny day, so that's good. Plus, I had a nice relaxing weekend. James was at a scout camp Saturday, one where they had to stay awake for 24 hours, so when he got home at dinnertime yesterday he crashed on the couch and slept most of the afternoon away. Meanwhile I'd been reading and deleting -- I only have 38k of emails now, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel -- and catching up on a few things.
More good news. For the last few months James has been getting grief from a manager at his work about his sickness. With having his op last year and various other things he'd been put on a warning, which is something they weren't actually allowed to do if any of those sick periods had to do with his disability. As the vast majority did he should have never got that formal warning, so the union ended up getting involved, and on Friday the warning was withdrawn with no further action. Which was a big relief.
Recently I've been reading The Captive Prince. The series has been recced to me before, but I'd never got around to actually reading. Then I was emailing with
themoononastick and she pretty much said, read it, it's made for you. And yeah, she was right. I'm nearly at the end of book two now and know there's a big cliffhanger coming, but I don't know what, so no spoilers. But man, I'm going to miss that universe when I'm done.
no_tags is happening and I need to put in my prompts. Due to the above I was tempted to prompt for pleasure slaves, but thought that was a bit mean for a flash fic challenge. Even so, it would have been wonderful.
I've done the laundry, a chicken curry is cooking in the slow cooker as I speak and it remains sunny. I may go for a wander around the estate and visit mam. Last time I did that I came home and found Dad in my back garden using a spade to chip at the remaining bricks of the old shed. Luckily it was bin day so the back gate was unlocked, so he'd just come in, put down his shopping bags and started tidying up. Then I got to stand in the mizzly rain with him for ages as he used a hammer to get the bricks to where he thought they should go. Which admittedly, was bit cold staying outside that long, but I do like spending time with him.
Before I go though, I'm going to go pay for my LJ account. I miss friendsfriends and five icons only is for the birds.

Date: 2015-02-09 01:53 pm (UTC)Good for James! Grief from his manager is horrible. I'm glad it got straightened out.
Your Dad is a hoot!
Enjoy the sunshine!

Date: 2015-02-09 02:07 pm (UTC)Enjoy your sleep ins. They're a nice thing to indulge in.
It was amazing how fast that manager backed down once the union got involved. Not that it ever should have got to that point.
Dad really surprised me. I came in the front door and all I could hear was a knocking sound from the garden. Went to check and there he was bashing away at the wall with a spade. He enjoyed himself, though. He's said he'll come back and supervise Corey putting the wall back up properly. Hopefully I'll get to stay inside for that, or at least it won't be raining.
I intend to, though mam has gone out so that part of my plans have changed. Still, it'll be nice to get outside for some sun, even if it is cold.
How's your day going? Any plans?

Date: 2015-02-09 02:27 pm (UTC)Sleep ins are a great thing. If I get the work from home job, then I can sleep in every day. ♥
It is cold and dreary here, so no plans to go out.
I'm surprised it wasn't too cold for your dad to be hacking away at the bricks.

Date: 2015-02-09 02:43 pm (UTC)That's an excellent plus.
I suspect he got a bit carried away doing the bricks so forgot how cold it was. He said at the time he'd suffer physically for it the next few days but still didn't stop. He misses stuff like that I guess, even if it is just hammering some bricks.

Date: 2015-02-09 02:16 pm (UTC)So awesome that my bath and book sessions have become hours long this last week. Often I couldn't stop reading and ended up resembling a giant prune.

Date: 2015-02-09 07:04 pm (UTC)Isn't sunny days wonderful?! It's been sunny here too, and warm!
I'm glad the warning was withdrawn. I really hope the manager will have some serious questions to answer though. As a manager they really ought to have known better!!
Everything I've heard about The Captive Prince has confirmed my first opinion that it's definitely NOT something for me :-)
no_tags!!!
I hope you'd a nice day. Without any standing around in the rain watching your dad demolish things :-)

Date: 2015-02-10 03:37 pm (UTC)It's sunny again here, too. And yeah, warm. Dad's just been and I was out in the garden with him and it was really pleasant in the sunshine. Warmer than inside in fact.
You know, I didn't ask if the manager got her wrist slapped. I'm going to ask later because she really did act in the wrong.
Captive Prince is incredibly well written, the world building is amazing, the character development fantastic, and the story line constantly surprising. However, I'd never recommend it to you simply because of what the story is about. It doesn't matter how well something is written, if the story is about something that leaves you cold, well there's no point in reading.
I still need to get in my prompts to no tags. I should go and do that right now.

Now I just need to think of an actual prompt for this one before the challenge closes on me.

Date: 2015-02-10 06:51 am (UTC)And yay for reading Captive prince! It's been on my to-read list for ages... Actually the reason I haven't read it yet is that I have a hard time reading WIPs, and from what I know, the suspense in this series would probably "kill" me.

Date: 2015-02-10 03:26 pm (UTC)Honestly, I think that's a good decision waiting to read. Like I said in my post I know there's a big cliff-hanger at the end, and last night I got to the end of a chapter where it was obvious the events of the cliff-hanger were about to start. I had to put my Kindle away because I just wasn't ready for that to happen. Tonight I may be on my knees yelling, why, WHY!?
It's an amazing series but yeah, I know I'm going to be frustrated.
