Luce wrote this for bbb a few years back and it's one that's stayed with me. It's an AU where Frank ends up in a wheelchair, and I love that Luce wrote a character who ends with a disability but remains all kinds of kick-ass.

Summary:
It's Christmas Eve out in the zones, where the ghosts are gathering strength as the prey on and absorb energy from the living. They are especially powerful on spiritually significant nights such as these. BLI may have succeeded at making the people in Battery City forget about the holidays of the old religions, but the ghosts still remember.
Ghosts never forget.
This is not a happy story.
Written for bandom holidays this year, this is an incredibly cool take on the killjoys universe. I really liked it a lot.

Another bandom holidays story, this one Frank/Jamia. Aka's love and respect for Frank shines through in this. It's beautiful. If you haven't already, check out the other bandom holidays works, there's some great stuff in the collection.

Summary:
Wherein: Mikey's life is fucking ridiculous, Ray has awesome hair, Frank has dubious crafting skills, Gerard is the best brother (mostly), and Bob has epic denial skills.
I found this after reading another of ermengarde's stories, and it made me laugh so much. Mikey keeps changing into different animals, the others deal in their own ways.
And one popslash story.
Thriller by
James had an appointment with his arm and hand surgeon today. He's been worried because his arm has dropped a little at the elbow -- for anyone new, James has AMC which means his arms are bent and fixed at both his elbows and wrists and last year he fell out of his car and broke his arm just above the elbow -- and he's been getting spasms in his shoulder. The consultant was great -- and he even saw the actual big boss consultant and not an underling this time. He wasn't sure what was going on but sent James for an xray to check the bone hadn't healed in a strange position. It turns out the break has healed beautifully, and his arm is as strong as it was before the accident, he thinks the break has loosened the tendons in James' arm a little, letting his arm drop, so that's a positive result we never expected after his accident last year. He said everything else looked okay, and the spasms could just be the tendons getting pulled, but as the pain is controlled with drugs there was nothing he wanted to try, so that was good, too. He's left James on a rolling 6 month appointment he can push back if nothing happens or can phone and ask to be seen sooner if needed, but right now, all is fine. And James can stop wearing his robot arm splint, which is awesome.
So all in all, a positive and productive day.

Date: 2016-01-13 06:44 pm (UTC)I hope your similar things are going well. Obviously I don't know details but I've been with James for 20 plus years and his disability is just part of our lives now, nothing we dwell on apart from dealing with things and situations when needed. Which is why I enjoy the story so much, that while the circumstances are different, it still shows it's perfectly normal that a relationship like Mikey and Frank's -- and mine and James'-- to happen. And I'll stop babbling now *g*
It was a great relief. We've had so much bad news this last year any good shines like a star.

Date: 2016-01-13 10:29 pm (UTC)One of the things Luce and I talked about endlessly when she was writing this was how much we hated stories that included a disabled character who was miraculously healed by the end of the story to give it a "happy" ending.
She really wanted to write something that was true to life, in the sense that most disabilities can't be healed, but at the same time was hopeful and uplifting.
*cuddles story close*

Date: 2016-01-14 12:12 pm (UTC)I'm sure it was a hard story to write but I'm so incredibly glad there was no 'happy' ending with a miraculous cure.
Sure, Frank's life isn't easy, especially at first, but I love how he still laughs and loves and enjoys life. That's such a fabulous message,

Date: 2016-01-13 09:35 pm (UTC)That's so good to hear about James' arm. It must feel nice to get some positive news after everything that's happened. And yes, the big boss consultant sounds great. Far too often people in that position seem to be completely uninterested in the patients.

Date: 2016-01-13 09:44 pm (UTC)It was fantastic to get some good news. We got a bit worried when he said one option for the dropping could be due to the break healing in the wrong position, but nope, it was all good news this time.
The big boss consultant is a really nice man, but he's so busy you don't tend to see him all the time. I especially like that he's arranged this rolling appointment, because as he said, this way it means James doesn't have to go through the hassle of being referred again if he needs to see him in the future as he'll always be on the books.

Date: 2016-01-13 10:26 pm (UTC)Ruby's and Erm's stories are both also very awesome. And I'm so glad you liked Jersey Boy.
So glad things are well with James. <3

Date: 2016-01-14 07:30 am (UTC)And I also agree about Ruby and Erm's story. Both so different but both so fantastic, as is yours.
It was so great to have good news for James yesterday and lovely to send him off to work today without his robot arm brace. After nearly a year I'd got the knack of putting it on, but it still took time.

What I meant was thank you v., v. much for reccing that story. It's one that's very dear to me.
Oh, and I have NO IDEA how I missed out on that
I'm so glad to hear that James is doing much better. Here's to his continued healing. :)
(Also: thank you again. Reading your rec made my day in ways I can't quite describe. ♥ ♥ ♥ )

Date: 2016-01-23 06:55 pm (UTC)It's not often disability is written so well, showing that it is hard but that doesn't mean relationships won't happen, last and be happy. Each time I read it's just like, yeah, I relate to what I'm reading. Obviously not exactly, but the feelings involved. So again, thank you for the story.
It seems a few people missed that story and I'm not sure why. I'm just glad I saw it when I was link surfing.

Date: 2016-01-23 04:24 pm (UTC)It really was good news about the break. I'm not used to getting good news in that hospital, so it was a lovely change.
