This is really a GIP which is probably of no interest to anyone but me. But that's never stopped me posting before *g*
This is the logo of my hockey team. I supported the Durham Wasps from when I was about 12 until some fucker destroyed the team they disbanded.
I love hockey, it's the one sport I could watch over and over. The speed, the cold of the ice, the swish of blades and thump of bodies being boarded. Durham ice rink was a dump, there was no plexi glass for years. I used to sit in the front row to the side of the netminder which was so dangerous. My cousin had stitches in her lips after being hit by a puck and once I was hit full force by a slap shot that left a huge black bruise for weeks. But we still sat there because with it being so close you saw *everything* I'd be sitting screaming when fights broke out, just bawling at the players. Durham never did get plexi glass, just a net. The rink had no seats at first and the floor used to dip but we learned to jump over those bits.
The Wasps were *good* in the early 90's. My friend and I then later James went every week. We went to Wembley 4 times and the Wasps were there twice, winning the grandslam for the first time once.
Then it all changed. Despite protests and a lot of details that I won't bore you with the rink was sold and the Wasps were no more in Durham. The team moved to Newcastle but I vowed that I'd *never* set foot in that arena and put a penny in the pocket of the person that took *my* team and I never have.
This is Rick Brebant.
He was our Canadian import #9 and was my first real person crush. I used to get all the autographs from the team every week. I've a wardrobe full of autographed programmes upstairs and I used to get a thrill just being near him. He was such an awesome forward, could skate like a dream and had a vicious elbow that could take someone out within seconds.
I miss the friends I made there. I miss throwing wooden spoons on the ice when our local rivals came bottom of the league and leaving the rink with a throat raw with shouting. Some of the best times were at that place, losing 5-1 in the last period of the Castle Eden Cup then watching as they pulled it back and the game went to penalties then crying as we won.
I miss being so cold that my toes would curl in cramps and drinking soup just to be able to talk without my teeth chattering and the way the ceiling would spray pooled water when the puck hit it. I miss the dance we did when we scored and the stupid songs that I still know now. I just miss hockey :(
But now I've bored you all I'll go *G*
