Day 2

In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soul. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Thinking about it, I could mention a few fandoms/shows that have being significant in terms of my fannish evolution and left marks on my soul. The Sentinel where I cut my teeth as a writer, Poltergeist the Legacy, where I found and read my first ever fanfic. Popslash where I came into my own as a fan/writer and found a group of amazing people who I still like and respect now. But what I'm going to talk about is Voyager.

I've talked about this before, so apologies if you're reading this again, but that show was the one that actually started me interacting fannishly. I joined my first ever mailing list, one for the Paris/Torres ship, and eventually started to join in, sending LOCs about fics and everything was so new and shiny and great.

Through Voyager I found my first ever slash story. And this is something I've also told often, but while surfing at E Groups I'd ran out of gen and het Voyager stories and saw this group called Voyager slash. Clueless, I thought it was for horror fic, and as that was a genre I didn't like I never checked it out. Until one day I was desperate -- and found my people.

It just shows how much impact that moment had on me as even now, many many years later, I can still remember how I felt as I clicked on that first story.

Voyager was everything for me at that time. I looked forward to every new episode. I bought the books, and wrote to the authors about how I liked the books, and rejoiced when one of them wrote back. I fangirled the fic writers I loved, and totally embarrassed myself when I met one of them at a Voyager con and stammered through how much I loved their fic.

Tom Paris imprinted himself on me. I read all the ships he was involved in, with my favourites being Paris/Torres, Chakatoy/Paris and Paris/Kim. I met Robert Duncan McNeil at a Voyager con, and had to lock my knees to remain upright.

I bought all the seasons on video -- which cost a stupid amount of money at the time, and watched them often. Even now I still have favourite episodes. The Chute for one, which has to be the Paris/Kim ep, and this last scene still slays me. This man is my friend. I can never forget that.

Or Day of Honor, where Tom and B'Elanna are floating in space.

And so many more, Captain Proton, Endgame, Caretaker, Alice. The list goes on. But let's gloss over Threshold. That mess needs never to be mentioned.

So yeah, it has to be Voyager. The show that shaped my life in both reality and fannishly and means my love for it, and especially Tom, will never diminish.

Awww, you were so much more elegant in your love than I was!! And I watched the first clip and teared up, so I can see why it touched you even after all these years and is remembered with squee.

I came up through ST conventions, as a fannish baby, and this is a lovely reminder of why I loved the shows so much - I remember watching the Vogager premier in a room with about 1000 other people and really falling for it quite early (ngl, I was absolutely a Chakotay girl through and through, but I find more and more to love about the other characters when I go back to it - there's such a lot TO Paris - I wish I'd been into more of the fic side of things when I was being fannish there, I think tehre could have been a lot to be drawn out there).

I'd a friend that tried to get me hooked on Voyager back in the day but it never took. (She was more successful with Babylon 5 but it never lead me into fanfic :-)

Your story about your first contact with slash will never stop making me smile.

I haven't watched Voyager in so long! I watched the Paris/Kim clip and got tears in my eyes! I do actually remember the one where Paris and B'Elanna were lost in space, what a moment!

It's so fantastic when that connection happens and whole new horizons open up! - I have to admit I only ever read Voyager fic as a sideline, but even so reading the words "The Chute" again made me go ohhh.

I had loved watching reruns of the original series, and Next Gen had premiered my senior year in high school, so those are the ones I imprinted on. Voyager and DS9 both were running when I either didn't have a television, didn't have cable, or both, but the episodes I have seen have always been great.

Also, your post makes me feel damn old.

THE CHUTE! Truly a classic. And one of the things that contributes to my liking of h/c I think
