Snowflake Challenge day 8
Jan. 8th, 2018 02:11 pmBack again, and I'm going to talk about The Musketeers.
In terms of reading it's probably my active fandom at the moment, and I've been poking at a fic for it for ages now. Maybe I'll even get it done and posted one day. But what to say about the show? I could have chosen many moments because despite it being action based, The Musketeers is funny often. Also, heartbreaking and angsty with enough h/c to satisfy any h/c lover.
As my heart belongs to Aramis, I decided on this one scene between him and Athos.

And of course, Aramis could be that stupid, because that's who he is, someone who lets his heart overwhelm sense at times, and it's the start of a huge plot arc where he gets the queen pregnant and has to watch his son grow up and be fathered by another man. Something that's obviously really hard for him, and something he struggles with hugely. It's also something that puts Athos into danger because knowing what Aramis has done is treason, and could end up with him being hung. And yet, they eventually get past that, and this is what I love about the show. No matter what happens, in the end they're there for each other always. Which is why I'm not keen on season three, Aramis being away from them all doesn't sit right with me at all.
I also love The Good Soldier episode, because it and the events of Savoy are hugely important in terms of Aramis and his character. I also love a good Marsac story, often people make him an out and out villain, but I think he's got more layers than that.
As told by Aramis.
What happened in Savoy? We were camping near the French border, it was a training exercise we had no reason to be on our guard. We were attacked in the night; most of our men killed as they slept. Marsac and I knew we were going to die, but we fought side by side regardless, like soldiers. How did you survive? I was wounded; Marsac dragged me to safety in the woods. He didn’t go back to fight, he hid in the trees watching the massacre. But I woke up the next morning, I found him sitting amongst the bodies overcome with shame, remorse. He felt he should’ve died too.
He ripped off his uniform and rode away. I should’ve stopped him, told him that he hadn’t done anything wrong, that throwing his own life away would achieve nothing. He just saved my life and I let him ruin his own. In his own eyes he is a coward and a deserter. Not in mine.

Not that I'm against stories where they all hate Marsac for abandoning Aramis to die on his own.
Mainly though, what I love most about The Musketeers is their love and respect for each other. The whole one for all and all for one, thing. Which admitedly, was much stronger in the first two seasons, but was still there in the last.

It's a show I love a lot and I still devour the fic. It's a shame that the fandom seems to have gone elsewhere, but oh well, I'm capable of squeeing solo.
For anyone tempted to see more, have a fanvid set to a song you may know.
And a nice one about brotherhood.
I must get some Musketeer icons already.

Date: 2018-01-16 09:19 pm (UTC)The first series remains my favourite.
I keep saying this is one of the best adaptation of the Musketeers - and, you know, being French, I wouldn't joke around with this ;) It's just that many adaptations use their personal traits and make them OTT. What I loved with that version is that you recognise at first glance who is who but they're all layered and you never find any of them a caricature.
