Snowflake Challenge 1
Jan. 2nd, 2020 10:23 amIn your own space, introduce yourself!
Using this format I saw at T's journal.
Call me ... Well, my actual name is Terri and you can call me that anywhere. But you can also call me turps or T. I'll answer to any of those.
Other things I've been known as (that I'm willing to share) ... Erm, I can't think of anything to be honest. I've used some variation of Turps throughout my fannish life. I'm turps33 at LJ and Insta, turpss on twitter though I'm barely on there. I did have a tumblr with a totally different name, mogwhy I think. But it's been so long since I used it I can't remember for sure. When I was a little kidlet my parents did call me wallabags. No idea why, but there you go.
A bit about my nonfannish life ... I live in the north east of England, in a small town half way between Sunderland and Durham. I live with my husband and three cats, Milo, Pansy and Tinker. I did have four until a few months ago when I lost Freesia, my beautiful old lady who I loved with all of my heart. I have a 23-year-old son, Corey, who went off to Newcastle for university and never really came back. I talk and visit him often and he'll always have a room here, but his life is in Newcastle now.
People you'll hear me talking about. James, my husband. We met a few days after my 18th birthday and have been together ever since, though only got married a few years ago. He's got arthrogryposis multiplex congenita or AMC as I always have to Google how to spell the full thing. If you watched Strictly the same condition Will has, though James' presents in a different way. Kayleigh, my sister. We have different dads but I've never seen her as a half anything. Chris, my brother, though I don't see him as often as Kayleigh. Pauline, my dad's long-time partner. I still see her often despite losing dad a few years back. I also see and talk about my in-laws often.
Mam died in 2018. She was a very difficult woman and our relationship often included walking on eggshells, but she only lived a minutes walk away and I spent hours with her every day and despite her bad behaviour loved her deeply. She was pretty much one of the centres of my life and despite all the firsts being done now, I'm still dealing with her not being here.
James has a full-time job but I'm officially his carer, meaning I get a small amount of money each week and look after him/the house. I also had a gastric bypass a few years back and lost a huge amount of weight. I don't talk about that in detail now, but if I do I'll put behind a cut.
A bit about my fannish life ... I'm a fandom old and first engaged with fandom in the days of mailing lists, E groups and web rings. My first fandoms were Trek, specifically Voyager, with a side of Highlander, Mag7, A-Team and my first actual fandom I wrote in was The Sentinel, which I'll always say cemented my love of h/c because man, that is one fandom that loves the h/c.
I then moved onto popslash, which was an amazing cracktastic time, where I slowly got better as a writer and had a fantastic time running challenges and comms. From there I slid into bandom where I'm still hanging on now, many years later. I've also got friends still from all of those times, in some cases over 15 years which is just, wow.
I love MCR, especially Mikey, the most but also enjoy FOB, and Pete. My heart remains taken by the Summer of Like and Panic V2.
Right now I read in a load of fandoms, but writing wise dot between bandom, Umbrella Academy and MCU, specifically Winterhawk as I love Clint Barton, both comic and movie version. Sadly I don't write as often as I want, which is a shame as I always enjoy doing so when I get started.
Things I'm super-enthusiastic about … Cats, the beach, long baths using Lush products, watching TV and going to the cinema. I have an Odeon Unlimited card which means for a set price I can go to the cinema as many times as I want and more than get my money's worth. There's little I won't watch apart from horror. I love cheesy Christmas movies and Christmas itself, have a greenhouse and a small garden which I enjoy working in. I love reading and usually have a couple of books on the go as well as reading on my Kindle. I like going to the theatre and bargain hunting and keeping in touch with people's lives via DW.
I'll post about rl stuff and fannish stuff, often all jumbled together. I flock rarely and anyone is welcome to read, lurk or comment ♥

Date: 2020-01-02 12:09 pm (UTC)And it is always good to be enthusiastic about cats, imho. I know people are all about puppies, but nope. Cats are where it is at. They're cute at any age. *g*
I should go to the beach too. Maybe Sunday if it isn't raining. Just to get myself out and walking and I love the beach in winter.

Date: 2020-01-05 05:52 pm (UTC)I babbled a bit in my intro, makes up for the fact I'm slacking on the next two challenges.
Cats are the best. Always.
The beach in winter is just as good, if not better than in summer. It's so beautiful with the plus you can get parked and have less people around.

Date: 2020-01-02 01:46 pm (UTC)We only have one at the moment (our apartment is very small) but we adore our Genji (she's my user pic).
Sorry about losing Freesia, we lost our Kitsune kitty (she was not a kitty -- she was almost 17 years old) in 2018, and it still hurts.

Date: 2020-01-05 05:51 pm (UTC)Freesia was 18 so I know what you mean about it still hurting. They're in your life for so long, and then suddenly they're not and yeah, it's heartbreaking.
I'm so glad you have the beautiful Genji to help with the loss.

Date: 2020-01-05 05:35 pm (UTC)I was thinking about you when I said about horror movies. I can read the books, enjoy horror fic, but the movies, nope. All for you!

Date: 2020-01-07 07:14 am (UTC)Ahahaha! You know, I kinda had a feeling that was the case. *cackles and hoards the horror movies* Though, it's interesting that you enjoy written horror, but not the visual.

One of the - many, many - things I love about you!

Date: 2020-01-05 05:37 pm (UTC)I can hardly believe the changes in fandom that have happened since then. But I'm so glad you're still around ♥
One of the - many, many - things I love about you!
♥ I was sad today as I checked the movie channels and Christmas movies was still there. But it wasn't playing Christmas movies. False advertising right there!

Date: 2020-01-05 12:30 pm (UTC)Oh yeah. TS taught me so much. I don't know if you were on the Senad and Prospect L mailing lists, but I learned so much from those people. But especially from a TS beta reader list I was on.
I always remember me posting my first ever story on there, and it was this wall of text as I knew nothing about the technical side of writing. They were so incredibly patient with newbie me when internally they must have been thinking, what the hell is this?

Date: 2020-01-03 08:08 pm (UTC)Popslash was such an awesome fandom!
Everyone should be super-enthusiastic about cats and the beach!

Date: 2020-01-05 12:01 pm (UTC)Popslash was fantastic. It was the perfect fandom to grow as a writer in, because everyone was always so enthusiastic and welcoming. Plus, crack very much encouraged.
Yes. I agree, cats and the beach are great.

Date: 2020-01-04 01:38 pm (UTC)This challenge is making me very nostalgic for older fandoms!
I don't use Lush products or take baths anymore (somehow Pip didn't hook up the hot water to the new water heater?!!), but I've started pampering myself more in the last few years. Because we're worth it. *g*

Date: 2020-01-05 11:53 am (UTC)I know. I dip into them every now and then, which is why right now I've the Blackraptor Mag7 site open.

And I'm very glad you're doing so, because you're right. We are worth it!
