Feb. 17th, 2020 05:39 pmWe went to see Parasite last night, and I can see why it's won all the awards that it has
I haven't watched many subtitled films -- the last was Pan's Labyrinth showing just how long ago it's been since I've seen one, so wasn't sure if I'd manage to lose myself in the film, but the subtitles weren't an issue at all. The screen itself was completely full, and we had seats against the wall, so it was weird looking from the side, but again, that wasn't an issue as I was soon pulled in.
It's a film that makes you think, and get angry and cringe and the parts about the smell got to me especially, that smell of poverty and basement living that the rich characters found so upsetting. None of the characters were fully good or bad, all shades of grey, though the rich father was especially hard to like at all, only his love for his son redeeming himself a tiny amount. While the rich mother was nearly as bad, so unaware of anything beyond her own family, house and rich lifestyle.
To be honest, we nearly turned back from going as it was a latish show, storm Dennis was going on and when we got to Durham the car park was closed due to the rivers being close to bursting, so we needed to park and walk in from a disabled bay. But I'm so glad we did make the effort to go as it was a fantastic film, and one I think needs to be watched multiple times to catch all the details.
Which is, Luce, you were very right in your opinions.
Today has been a bit of a meh one, so as I missed my bath last night I think I'm going to go soak and read and slather myself in body conditioner and then catch up on some tv.

Date: 2020-02-17 06:01 pm (UTC)NGL, I was a tad nervous because I know (I KNOW) that Parasite is off-beat and has gotten so much praise that it might end up not clicking with ppl. And, yeah, themes in it take you places. It does help that, aside from a wonderful cast (legit everyone brought their A game to the table), the fact that everyone (or, like you said, almost everyone because yes, it's only Mr. Park's obvious affection for his son that keeps him from being "rich jackass") has both good and bad qualities makes for an more interesting viewing experience.

Date: 2020-02-17 06:37 pm (UTC)I'm not surprised you've watched so often as I'm sure I'll have missed a lot of small details, but details that matter. Mr Park was my least favourite character, especially when he started talking about the smell. I know he wasn't the first to do so, but his comments were so full of contempt it made my skin crawl to hear them.
It was such an interesting study of the shades of grey, and I really enjoyed how they used the visual elements to strengthen the story. Like running down all the stairs, the water flowing over the steps as they ran back into poverty. That was just, wow.

Date: 2020-02-21 04:37 pm (UTC)Yeah, I do know what you mean.
It was so clever and had so many levels, but was quite uncomfortable to watch at times. I totally understand why it has won so many big awards.
