Jan. 12th, 2021 11:41 amThank you
venetia_sassy for the Christmas card. It was a very cheery thing to get today ♥
Lucy, Kayleigh's wife to be, has tested positive for Covid. She lives with Kayleigh and didn't get it back in October when we all had it, but when half the group home she works in tested positive it was pretty much inevitable she would too. Sadly she seems to have a worse case than we did, but at least Kayleigh is at home to look after her as they're both in isolation for a while.
The whole situation with my MiL's bed turned into a bit of a clusterfuck. After James called on Sunday, adult social services squeezed in a delivery as my MiL had been sitting upright and uncomfortable for over a week at that point. But, when the man got there he refused to deliver the bed as the room was too cluttered, and he wouldn't move anything. Which is understandable, both because of COVID and the fact their house is seriously grim and dirty.
So, it was agreed that he'd come back the next day after my SiL and her partner had cleaned up more. This happened, except yesterday I got a frantic phone call from my MiL saying could I get a message to James and tell him that the bed they'd ordered was the wrong kind as she needed a bariatric one, plus, they needed to have the gas fire capped as apparently you can't have a hospital bed in the same room as gas appliances. At this point my MiL was crying, my Sil and partner shouting in the background and all I could think was, what the hell was James supposed to do considering he was at work all day.
Thankfully they all calmed down, my SiL arranged for someone to sort the fire, and also dismantled a load of furniture to make more room, so hopefully, the bed will be installed on Thursday, when my MiL can finally get her legs up and get some sleep. Honestly, the whole situation is all kinds of frustrating, but one silver lining may be that they realise they can't keep living in the squalor they have been. And hopefully can get the heating back on, because their house is freezing.
On a brighter note. James' new role is doing him the world of good, so much so he was saying he feels like a new man. He's trying a shift pattern with longer hours in a shift for fewer days at work over the week, so is working 8-6 atm, meaning a 6 am wake up. I was a little dubious about how that would work, but so far it's been good. Which suggests taking a less stressful role was the right decision. He did love taking 999 calls, but it's a job where you have to be on constantly, have skin like a rhino and be able to compartmentalise always, and I suspect after 10 years of that he was just done. So yeah, while the pay drop isn't the best, that loss is more than balanced by his better mental health.

I'm so happy to hear James likes his new position! Less stress and better mental health are good things.

Date: 2021-01-12 02:01 pm (UTC)But, I can see their side as well. While they work in different homes Kayleigh and Lucy work for the same firm and they're at critical shortage level right now due to staff being off.
I'll be glad when Thursday is here and my MiL is in her bed and it's all done. It doesn't help she's got an infection in her legs atm, no doubt not helped by the lack of elevation.
James phoned me on his break and sounded very chirpy. I'm not used to that.
In other news, he asked me if I'd make him some flapjacks. He bought one at the staff canteen and as we had the ingredients in the house suggested I try and make some to save money. As I've no kitchen scales I've had to translate a UK recipe into cups and am a bit dubious about what's going to come out of the oven.

Speaking as someone who tried to bake cookies without measuring cups or spoons and failed miserably, best of luck to you.

Date: 2021-01-12 04:23 pm (UTC)Yeah, always something. This age where you look after parents and children is a stressful one at times.

Date: 2021-01-12 04:22 pm (UTC)I'm so happy James is enjoying his new role. Seeing him now it's obvious how much the old one was stressing him out.

Date: 2021-01-13 11:52 am (UTC)It'll be because of our post service, it's been seriously behind for months now. Half of the cards I sent still haven't arrived which is annoying.

Date: 2021-01-12 06:45 pm (UTC)Oh no, that all sounds like such a mess
That’s good that the new thing is working out better for him

Date: 2021-01-13 11:51 am (UTC)Mess is right, but hopefully, it'll all be sorted by tomorrow night.
It really is.

Date: 2021-01-12 06:56 pm (UTC)that whole bed saga sounds awful! I do hope things are sorted soon, so the bed can be set up (and that the general condition of the house is improved)
it's great to hear that James is doing better due to the change in work; sometimes it's hard, especially when there's a pay decrease, but the results for his mental health are grand

Date: 2021-01-13 10:29 am (UTC)The bed situation is stupid and could have been solved by someone coming out and saying, this is what you need to do to get things ready for it arriving. As frustrating as it is though, it has led to some of the mess and clutter being cleared, which is a good thing.
The pay decrease was a hit, I have to admit that. But, he's been looking into things and overtime is a profitable option for the future. Not yet as he's still settling in but if he still feels good in a month or so it's on the table.

Date: 2021-01-12 09:50 pm (UTC)Your poor MiL, that's just such a difficult situation <3.
I am SO pleased that it's been a positive move for James - the 9s is SUCH a grindingly stressful role, and what he's doing now is still really important but not so horribly draining.

Date: 2021-01-13 10:17 am (UTC)It is a difficult situation. I'm really hoping the bed will be delivered tomorrow and she can have a good nights sleep at last.
I don't think either of us realised how much stress James was carrying job-wise until it was gone. So yeah, such a good move.

Date: 2021-01-13 08:57 am (UTC)And what a rigmarole for your MiL! It sounds super frustrating for everyone involved. Hopefully the rest of the barriers to getting the bed set up can be resolved soon.
I am very glad though to hear that the new role is a lighter load on James. That must be a relief after so many years of squaring up to the heaviest stuff.

Date: 2021-01-13 09:48 am (UTC)The situation with the bed is all kinds of frustrating. It's great that she's getting one but it really needed someone to come along and explain what needed to be done to the room before the attempted bed deliveries happened. But, fingers crossed, by tomorrow night she'll be comfortable again.
It is a relief. He had to phone me on his break yesterday and it was the first time in a while I hadn't seen his number flash up in work times and not thought, what's happened now?

Date: 2021-01-14 03:40 pm (UTC)Well, as of now the bed is being delivered tomorrow for my MiL. The fire was taken out today, the room is clear. So, fingers crossed, this time tomorrow it'll all be done.

It makes me so happy to hear that James is doing so well in his new job!

Date: 2021-01-19 04:24 pm (UTC)Yep, the bed is there. Thank goodness!
James is really enjoying his job. It still amazes me how different he is when he's going to work. He never said anything but the stress must have been huge.
