Jul. 10th, 2021 07:05 pmWe've been to see Black Widow this afternoon and it was so great.
It was such a good way to spotlight Natasha and I enjoyed her 'family', especially her sister, Yelena.
I loved how it fleshed out Natasha's character, such as that she knows the dialogue of terrible Bond films off by heart and a lovely starting scene when we see the bond a young Natasha has with her sister. Which of course is when it all goes to hell and we find out it's not her family at all but a deep cover, and we're thrown into another world which heavily includes the Red Room.
And all the details of that are heartbreaking. I like how they never actually talked about the training in detail, but the throwaway comments were enough, forced sterilisation, girls ripped from family, combat and other training with many girls washing and out being killed. It was chilling and it was all too easy to see why Natasha has the focus and skills she has, and all the more amazing she regained her heart and trust in people.
Talking of, I liked she talked about Clint bringing her into Shield and how they had to hang out in crawlspaces for days above a train station in Budapest, a place which was a focal point of change for Natasha. Also, details like arrow holes in the walls of her former safehouse, again little things that made me smile and gave history to their friendship.
I loved everything about Yelena, she was fun and focussed and made me laugh often despite being jaded, and while she wasn't blood family, that didn't matter as the bond between her and Natasha was real. I also ended up liking 'mom' and 'dad' even though I disliked them immensely at first.
So yes, love for the film, the mix of tragic seriousness and humour and Natasha finally getting the focus she deserves.
But omg, I can't go without talking about the end credit scene. It's set years in the future at Natasha's grave, Yelena is visiting and does the whistle she and Natasha used to share and I was thrown, briefly hoping that Natasha would have whistled back, which would have been amazing. But no, it turns out Yelena is given an assignment to kill the person who killed her sister, and is then shown a photo of Ronan and just, what?!
I didn't see that coming and while it has to be tied into the upcoming Hawkeye tv show, I don't want Yelena to try and take out Clint because as I keep saying, I thought Yelena was fab, but Clint is my favourite.
Of course, I hit up spoilers and theories asap and many people seem to think Yelena will end up battling Kate Bishop, the new Hawkeye, and if so that's going to be sad, the two loved ones of two best friends fighting over something that doesn't require a fight at all.
Before the film, we drove to Re.F.use for our usual Saturday breakfast, but it was still shut due to some of the staff members getting dinged by test and trace. So we just drove to Durham early and has a bit of a mooch about.
After the cinema, we had to call into Asda as we'd run out of fish food, and the pizza aisles and BBQ aisle were ransacked, no doubt by people getting ready for tomorrow's match. We'll be watching of course, but with no pizza, sadly.

Date: 2021-07-11 08:11 am (UTC)I hope the restaurant staffers will come out of their quarantine safely. And the image of all those empty pizza aisles made me laugh. Key preparations, I'm sure.

Date: 2021-07-11 03:05 pm (UTC)The restaurant is staffed by a load of volunteers as well as the paid staff, so it makes sense they've shut down completely as I imagine a lot of people would have been pinged. Hopefully, they're all okay.
It was like a swarm of pizza-loving locusts had gone through the aisles. There are still four hours to kick off but I can almost imagine if I went outside the air would be full of the scent of pizzas cooking *g*

Date: 2021-07-19 04:01 pm (UTC)I was always going to see it but the last few MCU films felt lacking in many ways so I was going in with low expectations. But I really did enjoy it, and a lot of that was due to Yelena who I loved as a character.
She made me laugh and cheer her on as she and Natasha learned to work together again.
I hope you enjoy if you do go and see it.
