Jul. 19th, 2021 12:25 pmBefore I do a quick catch up, I bought a Waste Not Box from Re.F.Use at the weekend and it contained a plantain. Anyone got any recommended tried and tested recipes that include plantain as I've never cooked with the things before.
Since the last time I posted, it's been hot, often getting close to 30 on multiple days. Which is why I was at the shops before 8 this morning so I'd be home before things heated even more. Well, that and it's 'freedom day' and I wasn't sure if people would be wearing masks and respecting distancing once it got busier. Thankfully, everyone I saw this morning was wearing masks still, shop staff and customers alike, hopefully, it stays that way.
Twelve bags of ivy has gone to the tip and six more are ready to go next time James is off. So, I'm getting there, slowly but surely.
Lucy and Kayleigh had their baby shower on Saturday. It was a lovely afternoon which we spent in their garden. Lucy's mam and sisters organised it all with food and games and I enjoyed it. It was also the hottest day of the year so far and despite multiple applications of factor 50 I still got sunburnt and am rocking the reverse panda look with white eyes and red cheeks and forehead. Thankfully it doesn't hurt but still, not a good look.
Then on Sunday one of Lucy's sisters tested positive for COVID. Thankfully she was at the other end of the garden and we never came into direct contact.
Friday I was battling ivy when the doctor phoned trying to get into contact with James. He'd had a telephone consult the day before because he had a really itchy rash on his stump and leg. It's something that tends to happen when it gets hot as obviously his stump gets hot and sweaty in the stump sock and cover and he has to wear a hard plastic splint on his other leg. It's why it's always better for him to see doctor's that know his history, but this doctor was new, asked for photos to be sent, and then issued a script for steroid cream.
So, when she phoned on Friday I suspected she'd just looked at the photos and was worried about infection. Understandably she couldn't tell me what the issue was so I had to play telephone and messenger relay between her and James and arrange for her to phone on his lunch break. And yeah, she'd issued antibiotics and stressed he needed to take them that day, so as he was at work until 6 I had to arrange to pick them up.
Not long after that my MiL phoned and I knew something bad had happened. It turned out that James' uncle, her brother had died. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer before the first lockdown, got rid of that, got a different kind of cancer, had treatment for that, was doing fine, got an infection, and was then taken into hospital and had to stay there with no visitors due to delta hitting and the hospital locking down. He deteriorated fast and sadly passed away in the early hours of Friday morning. Uncle O was an amazing man, and his wife is distraught. It was their 63rd wedding anniversary just a few weeks ago and I feel so incredibly sad for her.
And now I'm off to catch up with you all.

Date: 2021-07-19 12:42 pm (UTC)Freedom day is ridiculous. I'm glad that a lot of shops are saying people still need to wear masks and keep a distance. But of course with it not being law now I suspect many people will ignore that.
It just shows how easily it can spread. Lucy's sister felt fine, then started to feel off on the evening and got a positive result the next day. Thankfully it was all garden based but she could have passed it to so many people if it hadn't been such a lovely day.
It is :(

Date: 2021-07-19 03:46 pm (UTC)I'll be so pleased when I take the last bag of ivy to the tip. It feels like I've been cutting and bagging it forever now.

Date: 2021-07-19 06:31 pm (UTC)I'm glad you were distant from the person who tested positive.
That rash sounds unpleasant.
I'm sorry to hear about James' uncle. What a health rollercoaster he had!

Date: 2021-07-20 07:13 am (UTC)Yeah, it was a shock to hear she'd tested positive, but it does prove that it really is sensible to stay outside as much as possible if meeting people.
Jame's uncle really went through it. It's sad that his last years were so limited as he had to shield, not seeing his kids or grandchildren.

Date: 2021-07-20 07:10 am (UTC)The ivy is a pain in the backside. But now it's cut back it should be easier to keep on top of. Now to get rid of the last bags and the garden will look tidy again.

Date: 2021-07-20 06:55 am (UTC)And I hope the doctor's prescriptions will help James feel better soon.
I'm sorry also to hear about James's uncle. Sending hopes for peace for all mourning him.
I continue to be impressed by the sheer volume of your work on the ivy. So many bags! That's well done.

Date: 2021-07-20 07:07 am (UTC)Thankfully it seems no one else has been infected by Lucy's sister, at least up to now. Guess it just shows that it really is safer to stay outside if possible.
James is fine now but I still feel for his aunt, she phoned my MiL the other day and couldn't speak for crying so much.
No lie, I may do a little boogie at the skip side when I drop in the last bag of ivy.

Date: 2021-07-20 08:13 am (UTC)Poor James. One more hazard of the hot weather. I hope the treatment helps.
And I'm sorry for your family's loss. 63rd wedding anniversary is really something.

Date: 2021-07-21 07:05 pm (UTC)I'm sad to hear you too have been afflicted with too-hot weather. It's cooled down here now and I hope it has for you too. Temperatures like that are inhuman!!
I'm full of admiration for your dedication to ivy-clearing! Particularly in this weather!
I hope James is' rash is better!
That's so sad to hear about James' uncle.
