turpsLet it be known that Milo used his steps unprompted for the first time today. No urging or gently push of his backside, he just hopped up them like he'd been doing it for all of his life. Then promptly stole my spot on the couch.
Yesterday the buckle on James' leg snapped, so, I took the buckle off his spare leg, only to see this morning that that was on the verge of snapping too. A call to the limb centre and they said to come in but that James should use his wheelchair in case the buckle snapped completely. Thankfully, while digging the wheelchair out of the cupboard I found James' old leg which had a pretty new buckle, so there was no need to drive to Newcastle for an emergency appointment.
I really don't know why they won't just send out spare straps still. I understand why they wouldn't do so for newbies but James has had a false leg for most of his life, and I'm more than capable of changing the strap. But, they won't allow that now so he'll have a regular appointment in the next few weeks.
Fannish niece news. My MiL was making herself ill with worry. My niece hasn't been listening to voice messages so her phone was full, hadn't messaged or anything. My MiL was beside herself and eventually, James and my SiL's partner agreed to drive down to where my niece was supposedly staying. They did so yesterday and thankfully, she was there, though in a house in a bog-standard social housing estate and not the isolated farmhouse with no phone reception she's been saying her girlfriend lives in.
My niece did eventually agree to see them, and phoned her nanna, and promised to phone her mam that night. She didn't, though did phone today on her way to a job she's managed to get. I'm still not impressed with her, James is back at work tomorrow and the last thing he needed was a five hour round journey, plus, it's apparent she could have phoned and been in touch at any time, just didn't want to.
But, at least my MiL can settle now, so in that regard, I guess the journey was worth it.
We picked up my FiL's ashes today so he's now home with us as my MiL was worried about the bairns knocking him over at my SIL's. A valid worry considering how boisterous they can be.
In a bit of fannish news, I watched the last ep of 9-1-1 and I'm sure like many people went to read some Buck/Eddie. I haven't found any gems yet, but I live in hope. Plus, you know, if you know any of the good stuff hit me up.

Glad they were able to reassure your MiL, but yeah. Just ghosting everyone is a dick move still.

Date: 2021-09-16 03:46 pm (UTC)It is a dick move. My MiL was worrying herself sick, all she wanted was one phone call just to know my niece was okay, and she couldn't even do that. Plus, my SiL's partner is sure the girlfriend's mam is the one who answered her phone the night my niece didn't come home and said she was getting assessed for mental health.
But, we all know she's okay and now she has to make her own way in the world. She's going to get a shock as now she's not in college she'll have to pay for everything, meds, food etc and not get money handed to her from her parents and a grant.

Date: 2021-09-16 05:24 pm (UTC)Frustrating is right. I do think it's one of those things where they should take into account who is asking. Yeah, someone with a new limb will need help to fit the straps, but James has been wearing one since he was a young teen and knows what to do.
Yep, I have to agree with that too. I never thought she'd act this way. But, at least my MiL knows she's alive now.
You didn't spoil me at all, I watched a couple of days ago, just posted about it now. Plus, some shows I don't care about spoilers anyway. It's why I enjoy your TV talk posts so much. I read everything about 9-1-1 and Lonestar in them, and then by the time they air here I've usually forgotten the details *g*

it's good you tracked down your niece and can reassure your MIL that's she's ok (if being an inconsiderate, immature brat); it's just weird that some people seem to be fine ghosting their loved ones

Date: 2021-09-17 07:05 am (UTC)Yeah, I was glad no emergency appointment was needed, especially as he would have to use his wheelchair to get to it. Not that that's an issue but I'm not allowed into the limb centre inner building due to Covid measures so I'd have to push James in, leave, then go back, and it would have been a lot of walking and waiting.
The ghosting is so unexpected. And so total too, her voice mail was full, she wouldn't respond to any texts or messages and while she was occasionally seen as active on FB, as soon as anyone reached out she would log off. I've always said I understand why she wanted to leave, and stand by that, but this was so abrupt and uncaring, something I never thought she'd be.

It's my MiL I feel for too. She was so worried that something was wrong, but, I guess she knows now that it's just thoughtlessness.

Your niece... wow. I'm so sorry for everyone she's hurt. But it does sound like at this point all one can do is stand back and let her find out what she's given up.

Date: 2021-09-17 06:57 am (UTC)The old leg strap should work fine for a week or so, hopefully anyway. As shown by two snapping in two days sometimes they do just give up the ghost.
If it wasn't for my MiL I don't think anyone would have driven down to see my niece. But, like many grandmother's she thinks her grandchildren are faultless and really was making herself sick thinking something was wrong and my niece was being stopped from getting in contact. Now she knows that's not true and yeah, has finally admitted K has made her choice and needs to get on with it.

I feel for James having to do all that driving on his last day off! I hope your MiL will be able to settle down now and stop worrying so much.

Date: 2021-09-20 08:07 am (UTC)See, that's what I don't get. It would cost much less to just send the straps out. Plus, not take up valuable appointment time. But, they won't budge on fitting them themselves.
I hope my MiL can settle now too. I've never known her so anxious as last week, so while the driving wasn't ideal, it was the best thing to do.
