In your own space, put some favorite characters into an AU, fuse some favorite canons together, talk about your favorite AU/fusion tropes, or tell us why AU/fusions aren’t your cup of tea. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I really like AUs and have written a lot of them in the past.

Countless stories in bandom that are AUs, vampires, creatures, gardeners, shelter workers, weres. Seriously, a vast number of my bandom stuff is AUs because I love the idea, what if. What if Gerard worked in a magical laundrette. What if Bob turned into a kid. What if Mikey was a supermodel and Frank his bodyguard?

But one of my favourites is, what if they were in Space!?

I love Space AUs, I've never done an actual fusion but putting the characters into space, oh heck yeah. I love imagining new worlds, how people would travel, the things that would be different and the things that wouldn't change at all.

While it's not up there as a top read fic, I remain so proud of Sound Tracking my main bandom Space AU.

And okay, I keep talking about the Musketeer Space AU and I just looked at the file and it's at 13k and why can't I just finish the thing? Apparently, last time I looked at it I left off halfway through a conversation about tentacle sex which is rather unfortunate.

So yes, in conclusions. I love AUs. I especially love Space AUs, simply because the only limit to what you can write is your own imagination.

Which is true for all AU/fic/fusions really, and while I've had a dry spell for a long time, I really hope one day I'll be sitting here again and that, what if? results in some actual words.

Thank you so much for sharing this inspiring post! You make it all sound so much fun. (I'm stlll stuck in a single consistent canon-divergent HP universe, but...) Aramis running an animal shelter was enough to make me start to realise that there are no limits. :)

(In space is an excellent AU preference which I can wholeheartedly appreciate. Most especially when 'in space' is also a Firefly fusion. See me swoon!)

Oh a Firefly fusion would be amazing! I had a spell a while back of reading Firefly fic, but sadly I can't remember fusions. Though I'm sure they'll be out there.

I did write bandom in space that was vaguely Firefly inspired, but vague is the key word - I was aiming for a similar feel rather than writing a genuine fusion. But I would absolutely put Firefly on my list of fusion settings, becauae I love that 'verse

your AU love is near and dear to my heart, speaking as a fellow AU-lover. especially bandom AUs!!

and also??? how did i not know about sound tracking?? well, now i have it open in a tab so i can read it.

this is my favorite thing about AUs tbh!! i love making up my own shit! and worldbuilding! AUs (especially scifi-y ones) really permit for that, and then you can happily slot the characters into it. it's so fun. <3

AUs are great and I've enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts about them, including yours. Especially so as my thoughts pretty much boiled down to, I love AUs! Especially Space AUs! *g*

Sound Tracking is old now so it's not surprising you missed it. But I'm so proud of it, especially as it was beta read to an inch of its life. So technically is probably up there with my best writing.

It is fun, and really, that's what writing should be.

AUs are everything to me; reality is my enemy. I should see if I can't get that printed on a t-shirt or something -- semi-colon and all. :)

I love how enthusiastic you are around AUs - I think those of us who've been through RPF fandoms are particularly attracted to them? And The characters still have to be recognisably themselves and not just an OC with their names yes 100% this. If someone wants to do that just write original fic!

I've noticed that too. It's interesting and makes me wonder if RPF gives more of blank slate to build AUs on. We're already building our own take on the characters, going full-on AU is just another step.
