We had to drop Murphy off at the vets yesterday at 8:30. He was going in for his teeth check, which meant an anaesthetic for him so he could get x-rays done and a full health check over. I wasn't expecting many issues but it turns out he has a genetic thing that meant he had to have multiple teeth removed. His pointy teeth and front ones are fine but he lost quite a few back ones, and the vet said eventually he'll probably lose them all.

He's doing fine, was high as a kite when he came home with two shaved front legs, a bald patch on his neck and puffed up like a balloon from having fluids. But he's eating and running around the crazy again so it hasn't traumatised him too much.

And I have to say, paying the £75 insurance excess and knowing we didn't have to worry about paying the rest of the bill was a good feeling.

The only issue is, his check-up is next Tuesday. While James is off, I'll be at the hospice at the same time. Normally Kayleigh would help but she'll be at work but the receptionist said someone would get the carrier from the car and if James can't manage to carry it to the car at this end, we have quite a few neighbours that would help. It does mean I'll need to rearrange my B12 appointment at the doctor's, that's at 8:30 and I need to be getting transport just after nine, which was just doable, but would have meant getting Murphy in his carrier two hours before his appointment which isn't fair.

Now watch, I bet the post will arrive later with James' appointment for next Tuesday too.

Have a photo of Murphy looking a bit sorry for himself

While at the vets I saw they have a new thing up, a sign with a candle in front of it saying if this candle is lit it means someone is taking their cat for its last journey so please keep voices low and be respectful. I think that's such a good idea, I've shed so many tears in those consulting rooms and while I wouldn't resent anyone if I heard them laughing it's a nice nod of respect.

Poor Murphy! It must be really weird to be missing those teeth.

Lily has issues with her back teeth too; I won't be surprised when they have to pull them.

Poor Murphy! Lancecat had the same genetic defect so he had teeth removed several times. He never seemed to be bothered by it and kept on happily crunching his dry kibble no matter how few teeth he had left.

How very typical that your appointments collide like that! I'll keep my fingers crossed James will NOT get schedule that day too!

What a lovely idea! I hope it will spread and become common at all vets.

Poor Murphy. It must be weird for a cat to wake up with some of their fur shaved off. I'm glad he's come through the procedure okay and hope his check-up goes well.

The candle is such a thoughtful gesture.

Poor Murphy! I hope the lost teeth won't bother him too much. He looks quite feisty in that picture. - And I hope his checkup will go ok despite the cluster of logistical complexities.

And that is indeed a very thoughtful gesture, and a fitting way to communicate that message to others in the office without making a big to-do about it.
