Aug. 18th, 2022 01:26 pmMy brother took down the top units a few days ago and I can officially say the downstairs of my house is in chaos right now. Everything emptied from the units is now in the living room or pushed into a corner of the kitchen so there are bags and boxes everywhere and I keep going for something and remember I need to find it first.
The unit doors, blind rails and old extractor are in the garden ready for a tip run at some point and the units themselves are anywhere where there is space and I need to give them a good scrub with sugar soap before they go back up next week. I did think I could maybe put stuff back on the counters but with the electrician coming and the ceiling being done it was pointless as everything would just need to be moved again.
The electrician came yesterday and the fuse box has been moved so we now have fuses that can be reached easily and turned on and off via little labelled handles and not fiddly wires and he'll be back next Wednesday to fit four new double sockets, which means more channelling of the walls and taking some of my newly painted tiles down.
The ceiling is being done on Tuesday now and the actual rebuilding of the kitchen, units going back up, counters, new sink etc will happen either Wednesday or Thursday. So, nothing is being done house-wise for the next few days beyond trying to organise bags and remember where things are.
Meanwhile, deliveries keep arriving -- today the sink will be here between 2-3 and we've picked a new fridge-freezer that will arrive on Monday. It'll be lovely to have one that doesn't leak and with drawers that aren't broken, plus it's going to be integrated which sounds nice. Though does take away my magnet gathering place. It also means we're having to try and eat down what we have in the old fridge-freezer, so some weird meals are coming up I think.
Right now we're very much at the it'll get worse before it gets better point, but I do know that it'll be worth it, and can cope living like this for the next week or so. It's an excuse not to dust anyway.
We cancelled our holiday today. We could have waited until next week but honestly, even if James' op was brought forward a few days it wouldn't be enough recovery time and obviously, health always comes first. My MiL has said she'll give us the money she gets back so we're thinking of either going to the Lakes or Amsterdam sometime in autumn instead.
It was Bodhi's first birthday yesterday so I spent the day up at her house leaving James to first go to the dentist where he had a tooth pulled and then stayed in with the electrician before joining the party. I wasn't planning on going up so early but got a message asking if I was free could I go help with the balloon arch, so by half eight I was blowing up hundreds of balloons and then constructing a Cozi Coupe car. And may I say, they're much more complicated to build than they look.
Bodhi had a good day and was celebrated well. She had a cake smash and you can see a short video here at Kayleigh's insta. ( As always, she's got a public account and knows I link and is fine with me doing so ) And some photos
Please make sure to look at and admire my work on the balloon arch *g*

We were supposed to be going to see Nope at the cinema today but James has been crashed out on the couch for a couple of hours now. This last week has been a lot for me never mind him so it's not surprising he's napping. I guess I'll see how he feels when he wakes up and then see if we're leaving the house o' dust and mess for a while.

Date: 2022-08-18 04:58 pm (UTC)What a bummer that you had to cancel your holiday. Why can't things work out with perfect timing?
Happy birthday to Bodhi! Those photos are awesome! Love the 'one' shirt.
I hope James is rested enough to go see the movie. I wasn't familiar with the title so I googled and as soon as I saw 'horror' in the description I was like, well, that's probably why I never checked it out. *g* I hope you enjoy it, though.

Date: 2022-08-18 09:10 pm (UTC)The kitchen sounds like it's going to be brilliant once it's all done (and dusting is absolutely not worth doing right now), and it'll be worth the disruption and faff (and the company bargains weird dining ;)).
Sounds like the right decision, if not a fun one, about the holiday, and hopefully you can get a nice break later on when things are calmer and James is fully recovered.

Date: 2022-08-19 04:17 am (UTC)I'm sorry you had to give up your holiday. Still wishing a smooth op for James and a thorough recovery afterwards. I hope you do get to have a nice trip later on in lieu.
And I hope you get to sail through the household chaos and come out the other side ready to enjoy all the improvements! The new fridge sounds like a big win indeed!

Date: 2022-08-19 06:47 am (UTC)I know, the timing was so bad :(
Just in the time I was up Bodhi had four outfit changes, pjs when I arrived, her official birthday outfit, then the tutu and 'one' shirt and then casual shorts and t-shirt. No wonder they're always washing.
Well James napped until about 6pm so we didn't get anywhere. He obviously needed it though.
You know what's funny about Nope? I really don't like horror films myself, I'd never go see a slasher film for example. But Nope has literally had a trailer in every film I've seen for months now, well, apart from the ones targeted at kids. And the trailers have been clever in that they started short and had more content added the closer it got to release date so now I actually want to see while normally I wouldn't. I've been manipulated like a pro, really.

Date: 2022-08-19 06:53 am (UTC)Ahahaha, you know me well with the weird Company bargains. I don't know if your branch did the same but Washington have been giving away Bullseye sauce for a while so when I was emptying cupboards I had about 18 bottles of the stuff. But yeah, the kitchen will be worth it and I'm hoping this time next week I'll be putting everything back to rights.
Yeah, it'll be lovely to get away later in the year. The timing was terrible and I'm disappointed we can't go, but also, so very glad my MiL paid for insurance or she would have been out of all of the money.

Date: 2022-08-19 06:55 am (UTC)I'm sure we'll have a nice trip away when things are much calmer and we hopefully have answers and a lot less stress. *fingers crossed*
Oh I'm looking forward to the new fridge so much. Mopping up every morning due to the leak at the front is getting old.

Date: 2022-08-19 01:02 pm (UTC)I'm sorry things didn't work out, but it's the right choice to take care of medical issues first. I'm glad your MiL is agreeable to letting you use the funds for a trip once James has recovered.
Bodhi is so precious! The balloons are a lovely backdrop.

Date: 2022-08-19 04:59 pm (UTC)You're so right. It's going to be great when it's done, but until then, man, the chaos and mess!
Bodhi is adorable and had a great birthday. Apparently, she slept from 5:30pm to 6am so they all had a good rest.
Thank you. He's been waiting so long it's a relief it's nearly here. Typical it's the day before we were supposed to be going on holiday, though.

Date: 2022-08-19 05:04 pm (UTC)We had our kitchen done when we first bought the house which was about 24 years ago and then this one, so are about the same timeline as your parents it seems. It looks like getting it done puts you off doing it again for 20 years *g* But yeah, it will be great when it's done. Roll on this time next week.
Yeah, it was the right decision to cancel but it's still a shame. I still can't believe after all this waiting the appointment was the day before.
The garden was full of balloons, they looked so nice and were pretty cheap. Though took a while to blow them all up.

Date: 2022-08-20 04:33 pm (UTC)I understand why you decided to cancel the vacation but it must feel a bit sad. So stupid that the op James' been waiting for for so long had to take place just before your vacation! It's really kind of your MiL to give you the money so you can take a vacation later instead.
It sounds and looks like Bodhi had a wonderful first birthday! Sunshine and balloons and chocolate cake, yay! You did a GREAT job on the balloon arch!

I still can't believe how bad the timing is. He's been waiting for so long and really, the day before. I mean, I'm resigned now but still. It is disappointing.
Bodhi really enjoyed her birthday, though slept through most of the first few hours *g*
