Aug. 19th, 2022 06:26 pmSome good news.
Corey's work put him in for his course/exam for his publican license and he passed it this week. So, if he ever gets the urge he can run his own pub. Though he's happy where he is now so that's more of a distant maybe in the future thing.
We got the letter confirming we're getting the cost of living payment. We suspected we would due to getting tax credits but it's always nice to have the confirmation. It's going to be paid in two payments, in September and early next year, and will help a lot towards the energy bills. Though I still suspect my Oodies will be welded to my body during winter.
We've been to see Nope today and I came out of it thinking, the hell?! It's one of the strangest but still visibly striking films I've seen. Though as I was telling
spikedluv in comments earlier, we were always going to see it due to the marketing. Apart from the films aimed at kids, the trailer has literally been shown before every film we've seen at the cinema for the last few months. At first, very short trailers barely showing anything, then they kept getting longer and longer, adding more info until I had to know what was going on. Shame after seeing it I still don't know for sure.
No practical kitchen stuff has happened today but I did buy filler, an extraction hose and connector and sourced tiles to match the ones we have already. Operation eat the food from the fridge and freezer is going well and I still haven't set foot in a grocery shop this week, though we're out of fruit so that may change soon. I did buy 6 candles from Wilko, but they smell delicious and had been reduced to 50p each, they had to come home with me.

Date: 2022-08-19 08:00 pm (UTC)good luck on finding good fruit (it's that time of year, and tastes delicious) but otherwise eating out of the fridge/freezer. I approve of your bringing those candles home - they clearly needed to be rescued, and you deserve stuff that smells fantastic

Date: 2022-08-20 07:13 am (UTC)We've been picking blackberries lately, but obviously, that means finding and picking the bushes. So I suspect buying fruit will happen this weekend simply because of time constraints. I think some strawberries sound good.

Date: 2022-08-20 07:11 am (UTC)I will show photos when we're done. But of man, a full house rewire. That would have been dust city! I started trying to clear the dust at first but quickly realised how pointless that is. The stuff gets everywhere.
It does suck, I still can't believe that after so long the op date arrived when it did. Worst time possible.

Date: 2022-08-20 06:33 am (UTC)And always yay for extra money coming in! And for each step toward your new kitchen coming together. \o/

Date: 2022-08-20 07:09 am (UTC)The extra money will be very welcome, as are the steps, even if they were only little ones yesterday. Today I must go to the tip as my hosepipe is trapped under a rubbish pile. Can't say I'm looking forward to the effort of that.

Date: 2022-08-20 11:45 am (UTC)Bummer you didn't enjoy the movie.
I love candles! I hope you enjoy burning yours, maybe during a lovely bath with a book and glass of your favorite beverage. *g*

Date: 2022-08-20 04:32 pm (UTC)Well, I didn't dislike the movie but it wasn't what I was expecting and I doubt I'd want to see it again. It says a lot that the first thing I did when I got out was Google reviews to find out what the hell had been going on.
That sounds like a very appealing thing to do. I love candles so much and miss them when it's so bright and sunny as it never feels right to burn them then. But a bit of a dull day and they're lit for sure.

Date: 2022-08-20 04:03 pm (UTC)Excellent news about the CoL payments, although it's definitely worth planning for the Oodie economies either way. I've been hanging out over on MSE's money saving oldstyle forums a bit to get some ideas of painless changes.
Hurrah on eating up the frige and freezer! It's so satisfactory to make progress there - I WAS, then I got a lot of yellow stickered GF bakery in the coop today. Oops, but when you see it and you'll use it you WILL save money, so as long as there's space, then it's all good (be that candles, bread or infinite bottles of bullseye...)

Date: 2022-08-20 04:29 pm (UTC)I need to go look at MSE again because oldstyle had so many great tips last time I looked. But yeah, payment or not I can see some cutbacks will have to happen and Oodies and blankets will be my friend.

Exactly! I think we've discussed this before but I'm quite happy stocking up on stuff I know will get eaten. For example, I use a lot of tinned tomatoes so when Company had their recent special of 6 cartons of chopped tomatoes for 50p I stocked up big time as I know they'll store nicely. And I will use the candles too, also the bullseye, though just seeing that makes me laugh due to how many bottles I have right now.

Date: 2022-08-20 08:03 pm (UTC)So good to hear you're getting the extra payment!
Good luck with Operation Eat the Food!

Date: 2022-08-21 06:59 am (UTC)I doubt we'll get through the freezer stuff by tomorrow, but at least the fresh stuff in the fridge is nearly gone. I need to completely empty the old fridge freezer and the new one needs to sit for eight hours before use, so I'll have to pack the frozen stuff into freezer bags and hope for the best.
