Sort of GIP

turpsThis is a sort of GIP. I've been playing with animation shop and managed to produce this icon. But I keep having problems with file size, the icon's not as good as I'd like, but not bad as a first attempt I suppose.
I totally screwed up with the colour one though, keeping it below the 40k limit was impossible without making the icon really blurry and nasty. Like this,
Does anyone have any links for basic tutorial sites about making icons? I'm very much a beginner but want to try and get a bit better.
