Snowflake finished yesterday. I didn't do many challenges but had a blast modding again. I enjoyed going to journals and commenting on the stuff I normally wouldn't see. Fandom does have issues at times but also has a hell of a lot of happiness and interesting things going on. So, yay Snowflake! Yay fans!
If you're interested there is a friending meme going on here you can check out.
James is feeling better, which you can tell as he's back playing with his lathe again. He's made miniature wooden mushrooms so far and earlier came downstairs with a small wooden bowl, which is very cool. He's also getting interested in different kinds of wood and gets this gleam in his eyes as we pass trees like he's assessing the possibility of whipping off a branch. It's interesting, but I now know more about wood and the various hardness of said wood than I ever expected to know. And yes, I know what that sounds like. Get your minds out of the gutter.
Yesterday we went to see A Man Called Otto, I haven't read the book or seen the original film but I liked it. It had faults and the plot was obvious a mile off and it made me cry multiple times but I never looked at my watch once which I always see as a good sign.

Date: 2023-02-02 09:51 am (UTC)I have to admit, I found Snowflake a little weird this year, though it may be that I'm just feeling out of sorts and out of fandom. So many of the challenges were things I either couldn't do or felt no inclination to do. I will do the 'rec three things' one, possibly not until I have got over this horrendous head cold, but a lot of it really didn't work for me, and seemed like chores rather than fun. I don't know why. Ah well, never mind.

Date: 2023-02-02 03:48 pm (UTC)Not at all! But you are right, crafting is good for the soul, at least, he really enjoys it. Even if supplies are starting to take over.
I think sometimes challenges just don't work for people, even if they have done in the past. I know in past Snowflakes I bailed after one challenge because I wasn't feeling it. While in other years I've done them all.
I've been talking about this with a couple of people this year, and I do think the longer you've done them, sometimes a feeling of, I've said all this before creeps in. For example, the tropes challenge, I made a comment to a responder that my flist friends could answer for me I've answered about it so often. The problem is, for everyone who has done the challenges from the start there are also newbies with new things to say and wanting a platform to say them. So I get it's a delicate balancing act.
But I am sorry it didn't work for you this year. Like I said in the post I didn't do too many challenges this year and linked even fewer to the comm, but I did enjoy reading responses. It was like I was getting all the good parts without doing any work myself.
Also, I hope your cold goes and you feel much better soon ♥

Date: 2023-02-02 07:14 pm (UTC)I'm LOL'ing at the image I have of James checking out trees as you pass them.
I said something very similar to my mom after the movie; I never even took a sip of water or reached for my gume or got tired of sitting. I was pretty enthralled during the entire movie. Oh yeah, and the crying. *g*

The film made me cry so often and really captured my attention throughout despite being predictable. I really got caught up with every character and wanted the best for them all. Well, mostly all. Maybe not the developers.

Date: 2023-02-02 09:10 pm (UTC)I'm glad to hear James is feeling better and having fun with his new toy. Those tiny mushrooms sound adorable! I giggled a lot at the thought of him starting to eye trees! My maternal grandfather did quite a bit of wood working both carving and latheing (if that's a word?) and I remember how lovely some of the wood smelled.
Yay for watching a good film! From what I've read in Swedish newspapers it's not nearly as good as the original. Mostly they seem to find the casting completely wrong.

Date: 2023-02-03 08:27 am (UTC)I'm not actually sure what he's planning to do with the tiny mushrooms, but they do look adorable. Everywhere we go lately James is eyeing trees. I wouldn't be surprised if he comes home with a branch one day. He was looking up driftwood yesterday to see if that can be used in a lathe but apparently, there's a chance of it smelling, plus the salt is an issue. See, things I now know but didn't before *g*
The original film seems to be well thought of but I was reading some negative casting reviews. I'll have to see if I can get my hands on the book and see the changes that were made.
