Thank you
dine for the valentine's card! ♥
It's the kidlet's birthday today, so happy birthday, Corey!
He was at work until 4am last night and is going out with friends tonight so we met up with him mid-afternoon yesterday to give his presents and then go out to eat. We went to an Indian restaurant near where he lives and it was delicious, with lots of leftovers to bring home.
It was a busy day yesterday, I had to go for my annual blood tests at 9:30 where the nurse took many vials. Went from there to visit Pauline and pick up some birthday cards, then to Durham to the cinema where we had tickets to see Magic Mike's Last Dance, and oh, talk about disappointing.
I enjoyed the first two films, especially XXL but this last one? It was terrible and had lost so much of what made the other two great. I think the biggest issue was the other strippers from the group/last films were literally featured for a minute via a zoom call, so they never even interacted. I liked that the previous film wasn't afraid to laugh at itself sometimes, but also pushed for female empowerment. While in this one, people, especially Mike, talked about female empowerment it was never actually shown and it didn't help that I found the main female lead incredibly unlikeable and I didn't root for her at all.
The plot was laughable and made no sense, and needed padding out hugely. But at the same time, I would have hated if it had been padded out as it would have meant I'd need to keep watching longer.
The new dancers/strippers they brought in danced well but there were loads of them and you never got to know them at all so I had no interest in them and honestly, I was glad when it was all over.
Plus, there was a scene that really made me cringe where they needed a female official to give permission for the show to go ahead. She was shown as friendless, no social media presence, older, sticks to the same routine all the time type. Anyway, some of the dancers danced for her on the top deck of a bus when she was travelling to work, trying to show her positive attention and what the show was about but all I could think was, the films always state permission is the number one thing, all dancers ask for permission to dance close and touch before doing so, but this time this woman is just sitting minding her own business when they start dancing for her, and yes, they didn't touch maybe but no. Just no, she didn't go to a show or expect to be performed to like that and it left me cold, even if apparently she'd loosened up enough by the end to attend the show and be the focus of one of the dancers.
As far as I'm concerned, the last dance film does not exist in the franchise.
Thursday we took my MiL out for the afternoon. It was the first time she'd left the house apart from one doctor's appointment since she stayed with us at new year, so she was glad to see some new scenery. We went to Tynemouth and had lunch out and called in the Starbucks drive-thru on the way home and she seemed to enjoy herself. Though it did get off to a rocky start as the portable oxygen cylinder she brought with her was totally empty. Thankfully, she had a spare but it took me ages to find it buried under blankets at the end of her bed.
Poor Lucy has Covid again, and Kayleigh suspects Bodhi may have had it last week when she was unwell. At the moment Kayleigh is fine, so hopefully, it stays that way.

Date: 2023-02-11 11:37 am (UTC)I knew it was trouble once Steven Motherfucker Soderbergh was back producing. >:-(
I'm so sad. I was looking forward to it. Dammit.
I hope covid-people feel better! And happy birthday, Corey!

Date: 2023-02-11 03:58 pm (UTC)Oh man, that movie sounds awful. I haven't seen any of the others, but the previews for this one made it look good, but maybe just because everything moved so fast all you really got was the music making you bounch.
I'm glad you M-i-L had a good time!
Oh no for Covid! I hope Lucy is better soon and Kayleigh stays safe.
(I think of this story every time I see Kayleigh's name. My sister's middle name is Leigh, but for a very long time I didn't realize it was spelled that way because I'd only ever heard it spoken, not seen it written down. The day I found out it wasn't 'Lee' was *mind blown* LOL)

Date: 2023-02-11 04:52 pm (UTC)I was dating XBF when the first movie came out. We always rented a movie on Saturday nights. I told him it was about "an auto mechanic". He agreed to it and was about to order it when I added, "...who strips on the side". And that was that. LOL. I didn't think he'd enjoy it, although, I sat through a lot of movies he picked that I had no interest in, so he could have agreed to be nice. Especially since he tended to SLEEP through most of the movies we rented, and would ask me about them after the fact.
I don't think I saw the second one, and you've given me good reason to skip the third. Many thanks! That will save me from wasting the time (even though I'd likely wait until it was on TV where I could walk away anytime I wanted to!).

Date: 2023-02-13 07:35 pm (UTC)How very sucky that the Magic Mike film was so bad! I know how much you and Kimberly loved the two earlier films. It did get terrible reviews here in Sweden but I hoped it would at least be enjoyable for you.
Poor Lucy! I'll keep my fingers crossed she'll get better swiftly and that Kayleigh won't get it at all!
