Mar. 17th, 2025 04:21 pmI enjoyed weight management class today, especially the exercise part
The talking bit was about carbs, which was interesting finding out exactly what carbs are, and in fact, unlike what many diets said in the past, that they're not the enemy at all. You just have to be mindful of what kind, and how many you're actually eating.
But, a slight negative. Weight management scheme has three drop in classes a week in different local towns, and only ours is running this week, so some people came from those other classes. Which is fair enough, you're allowed to go to any, even all three if you want. However, one couple took over the talk, telling all about their weight losses and what diets they were using and their exercise routines. Which isn't what the talky bits are really about, especially when other people couldn't get a word in. Plus, they made a comment about how Rosie had crammed everyone into the space and the hall we use, and I may have got a bit internally protective over my class. Oh, and when talking about portion sizes, the lady of the couple said that the advised serving size of 8 teaspoons of cornflakes was a huge portion that she wouldn't be able to eat and really, I think not.
But the exercise part, I felt good in it, and we managed four circuits which is one more than usual. Plus, as there was nothing to carry on the three level step I felt like I mastered it at last, able to step up with both legs, and not just leading with the right one which I usually do. Of course, now I've said that no doubt Rosie will add the 10kg grab bag again next week, but for now, three level step mastered!
There was a bit of a sad part. Leaving with my friend, we stopped outside the hall to talk to a new lady who was feeling really downhearted that she hadn't been able to manage all the class. I'd noticed that she had to sit out a few times to take a breather, but that's nothing unusual. I mean, when James goes, he tends to only manage half the stations and has never done the full amount of circuits. Unfortunately, this lady had come on a day when no other total newbies had started, and the regulars that do tend to sit out or need modifications weren't there, so she was saying how embarrassed she felt and how she couldn't do the weights and I just felt so bad for her.
We both told her that she had nothing to be embarrassed about and to talk to Rosie who would tailor something much easier for next time. And I do hope she does, because class has always been a judgement free safe place for me, so I want that for everyone.
I went to Durham with James on Saturday, taking the bus to get there. It was a chilly but sunny day, and I enjoyed the walk, and couldn't resist a look into the Donkey Sanctuary charity shop where they sell every item for £1. I came out with three new to me long line tops and at this point I really need to go through my wardrobe and sort out my clothes. That or ban myself from charity shop buying.
We decided to eat out, and I had very delicious jackfruit fajitas, then as we had time before the film started, went to the Chinese Supermarket next to Odeon where I continued my kimchi tasting and bought myself some more. I was actually surprised at just how many kinds they had, and was tempted by a radish kimchi, but in the end went for the bargain of a two for one deal. I've tried it since then, and it's not as liquid as the first kind I tried, but still just as delicious.
The film we went to see was Mickey 17 and I liked it for the most part. It was interesting sci-fi and Robert Pattinson was great in it, and the parallels to current politics were obvious, with Mark Ruffalo playing the main idiotic politician with very Trump like mannerisms. The plot got a bit bumpy towards the end, but it kept my attention throughout. What I didn't like was, and I'll cut for
At one point Marshall, the main cult like politician/leader of the colonisation, brings in a huge rock and cuts it open. At which point two baby aliens erupt from it. They're not humanoid, but also not hostile, so seeing one of them shot multiple excessive amounts of time in close up was distressing. Then, another baby was caught and wrapped in a plastic bag, squealing all the time. That baby, while alive and aware, also had its tail chopped off later, so Marshall's wife could make the tail into a sauce.
Both scenes did emphasise the cruelty of Marshall and his lackeys, but man, they were a hard watch. And also made me root for the aliens to actually explode the humans heads like they threatened.
Rosie the car gets her new glass tomorrow, which I'm glad about as a bin bag and lots of tape doesn't make for a very secure vehicle. Typically though, the appointment to fit it is an hour after the start of a funeral of a neighbour. Technically, we could still go and get back in time, but it would mean leaving as soon as the service was over and hoping there were no delays. Certainly not ideal, but at the same time, I'd like to go pay my respects.

Date: 2025-03-18 03:34 am (UTC)I'm sorry the chatty couple felt the need to take over the talking portion. The nerve!
That was kind of you to encourage the newer person. There's no reason for anyone to feel embarrassed. Everyone started at some point. It's a lot of work. I remember breathing heavily just walking up the stairs from the basement after cleaning the litter pans. I knew I had to do something about it. And I knew I wasn't going to be walking 10 miles the next day. I hope the lady comes back and keeps working. It is satisfying when you start accomplishing goals!
When my online friend from Germany came for a visit last year, I had to try to find places with vegetarian offerings. We went to one place where I had a jackfruit sandwich that was supposed to be a vegetarian version of a BBQ pulled pork sandwich. Sorry to say, I was very disappointed and found myself wishing I'd tried something else. I never went back to that place. But I'm glad you enjoyed your fajitas!
I've heard kimchi is healthy (I think for the same reasons Kabucha is), but I've never seen it here... but I'm not sure exactly where it might be located if it's offered at the store. I don't think I've ever had it, but it sounds interesting, and healthy.
I'm glad Rosie is getting new glass tomorrow!

Date: 2025-03-24 05:42 pm (UTC)Yep, the good and bad card is the direction the talk went last week. In fact, everything you mentioned here was discussed, especially how there's not a thing wrong with having treats. It's how often you do so that can be an issue.
The chatty couple were back again today and again took over the talking section, including a lengthy description of how they'd gone to Florida last Christmas and what they'd eaten there. They really don't seem to get this is a group thing with limited time and they really can't take over.

I suspect most people have moments like that where you realise something needs to be done and you're right building up takes time. Sadly, the lady wasn't there today, and I do hope she hasn't been scared away for good. Especially so as there were a few newbies this time, a couple of which had to sit out for a bit. So she would have seen she wasn't alone at the start.
Rosie is big into gut health, so it was her that pushed the kimchi. I didn't know where to buy it either and it took me ages to actually find some, and even then it was a themed week at a supermarket I go to. So I was pleased when I saw it in the Chinese supermarket, especially as it was much cheaper there. You mentioning Kabucha makes me wonder if they sell that there, too? I'll have to check next time I go.
Rosie is all glassed up now!

Date: 2025-03-18 11:28 am (UTC)Yay for a nice day out! I'm glad you found some new tops and enjoyed the movie. (I don't intend to see it so read the spoiler and ick!)
Great that Rosie gets new glass, but boo that the timing conflicts. I hope you're able to make the service as well as the appointment.

Date: 2025-03-24 05:46 pm (UTC)Total BS! That couple were back again today and took over the talking again. It's like they need to tell everyone their own personal, lengthy, stories that they think relate to the discussion topic. The problem is, they may start relatable, but every time they just don't stop talking!
Yeah, the spoiler was ick, and quite distressing to see.
In the end we didn't get to the funeral because the glass fitter came early. This was despite us checking he'd come at the agreed time. But nope, he was early, and by the time the glass was back in the service had already started.

Date: 2025-03-24 05:48 pm (UTC)It was terrible luck. She didn't come back today, but if she had she would have seen that two out of three newbies that started today needed to sit out while the other had to have adjustments from the start, so it was nothing to be ashamed of.
Sadly, the glass fitter came early so there wasn't a chance we could make the service :(

That poor lady! I really hope she takes your words to heart and tries again.
