I wasn't going to post this as I've seen it a few places, then realised some people may not have seen it. Even if they have there's no harm seeing it a few times.

As posted by [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic first.

Please post your full name, date of birth, full address, and telephone number (plus cell phone number, if you have one) to your journal, as the first chronological entry (backdated) in your journal, with Private security, and leave a note in your userinfo indicating that you've done so. The life you save may be your own. In the event of an emergency, LiveJournal administrators can view this information -- and please believe that it is only used in the event of an absolute emergency. But you'd be surprised how many of those there are on a service with four million users. And in an emergency situation, every second counts.

Yes, the Abuse team occasionally hears of users who plan to commit suicide, but there are other situations where having this information could possibly be of use to the police. There have been, for instance, phone posts that were interrupted by physical violence before, and other such situations. The Abuse team often gets reports of these things, and oftentimes, there is nothing we can do to help, because we can't find you.

Please take a moment of your time and make this post. Your privacy will never be violated except in absolute need, and though we hope it will never be necessary, it could prove to be very necessary indeed.

part of me thinks this is a good idea, part of me thinks it's joy on earth for hackers / stalkers / other such things.

Also : does anyone know anything about how to call the UK emergency services from overseas? I'm curious now.

I'm with you on that. I totally understand how the info could be vital but at the same time security is a concern. [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic does address this question in her post (http://www.livejournal.com/users/synecdochic/30407.html) if you want to see.

From what I understand LJ has a lot of workers scattered around the world so I imagine someone would know or know how to find out. I suppose the best thing would be to ask [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic

Yeah, I'm afraid I'm with you on the hacker/id theft thing.

Raving paranoiac me, not as if anyone would WANT my info, but...

This was addressed by [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic in the initial post. If you want to go see what she says about it.

I figured there's no harm in passing the info on then it's up to people how they take it.

I can see how the info would be helpful to them and really lots of people put their personal info on LJ day after day, but at the same time I also see how that could maybe be misused.

As I said. I'm nothing but a messenger *g*

You just update as normal, but at the top change the year to before you started to use your LJ. Maybe 2001 or something, then click the backdate button which is above the disallow comments thing and post. It'll be backdated then.

Hope that helps.
