A note for FFNet writers
Jun. 27th, 2003 03:48 pmI've said this before, but if you're going to write fanfic learn to spell the character's name. It's BrennAn not BrennOn. It's not hard, you must presumably like the show, and know how to use the internet, so why can't you look to see how to spell his name?
Also, do not write 'any comments welcome, even flames' because damn you, one day my evil side will win and I'll give you what you want.
Try and keep the pop culture references out of your stories unless they're valid. Linkin Park are a great group, I love them. But in no way can I see Emma and Shalimar down in the mosh pit.
Paragraphs are our friend, use them. I will not read something that's one huge paragraph.
You may think it's a good idea to quote a full song or poem in a story. Yes it looks like you've written something longer, but we all know you're deluding yourself. I don't mind songfic, have wrote it myself, the difference is I didn't have the whole frelling song in the middle of the story.
Internet short hand in a story. It makes me want to scream and that scares my dog. Is it really that hard to write 'you' instead of 'u'?
Brennan does *not* yep like a little dog when he's hit in a fight. The only time he may yep like a dog is when Jesse has him on the leash with his collar round his neck. But you don't know those kinds of stories, so yepping, don't do it.
Is 'pasted' really the right word for this the sickness pasted and he walked to the door think about it.
Do all OC's have to have red hair and green eyes? What there's no non descript Mary Sues around?
Do not put author's notes in your stories, arguing with your reviewers. If I click on the next chapter link I want to see more story, not you insisting that yes Brennan does have a motorbike. Btw, yes he did ride a motorbike in Time Squared, but that was when he time travelled to the past. He doesn't have one now, as you would know if you watch the show. Though that's looking unlikely.
Last thing. Try and spell the title right at least.

OMG! lol
Date: 2003-06-27 08:41 am (UTC)I must say I really ache for you, knowing you're surfing through the so-called fics archived at FF.Net. You have all my sympathy, sincerely...
Reading what you apparently have to go through on a regular basis, I must say it's a miracle you didn't a) go insane and b)send one of those flames they're apparently asking for.
If they can't at least follow the most basic rules of writing a fic, maybe someone should tell them-- and even if they don't learn anything even after that, it would make you feel better, anyway *g*
I know we must be tolerant about fanfic writing --and I'm really being honest here-- but sometimes I think you're right, some writers just don't know how to write, period.
It's not being mean to say it, seeing that they can't *even* write the name of the characters right *shakes head* I mean, just this little detail says a lot, IMHO.
Although there may be another factor to considerate. It should be interesting to see the age of those writers-- they may be teenagers writing fics for the first time. Not to say that teens can't write a good fic, don't get me wrong... but sometimes it's a good explanation for the bad writing.
Anyway, good luck for the other fics you'll --unfortunately-- have to read there lol

Re: OMG! lol
Date: 2003-06-27 09:19 am (UTC)LOL. Thanks. It's just been one of those frustrating days, and when I found that it just ignited my ranting side. Why did I get so involved with such a small fandom again?
You're not being mean at all saying that some people can't write. Well, amending that, everyone can write, it's doing it well that's the problem.
But even then I'd make allowances if the most basic mistakes weren't made. Like character names. These people can upload stories yet can't go to the official site or a fan site to double check the spelling of names.
Stuff like that drives me crazy. I agree that sometimes teenagers can be poor writers, but again it comes back to the basic mistakes thing.
Thanks for the luck. Considering that's the only place that I can find slash MX fic apart from my site I have to go back :(

Re: I'm with you!
Date: 2003-06-27 02:39 pm (UTC)I've seen that FFNet seems to attract some of the worst writers, and yeah, some of the cliches are horrific.
Though I'm not glad that it's as bad in other fandoms, I am glad it's not just in MX.
Don't worry, I'll be keeping up my crusade against badfic, me and my poodle ;)

Date: 2003-06-27 02:45 pm (UTC)Guess I can strike one of my rants of the list. Thanks for telling me, it lowers my anger levels some *g*
Btw, I don't blame you for pulling your stories if they did that. Stupid archive.
