Calling on the flist as a last resort.

I woke up and my computer had restarted itself. Which shouldn't have been a problem except I'd left Word open with a story I'm working on. Even so, I have auto save switched on, except it seems the last time it autosaved was about three days ago, 4000 words back. Now, it isn't as bad as it could be as I've been posting private to my LJ, except what I'd done late yesterday afternoon, about 1000 words worth.

I've tried every trick I know, my auto recovery programmes, searching Words deleted files, have been googling all morning but am getting nowhere. I suspect I need to suck this up and just rewrite, but still, it doesn't hurt to ask if anyone has any suggestions.

So, help.

It really is.

I suspect I'll just have to redo. Which figures, because I know those 1000 words were awesome ;)

Unfortunately, I have no tips for you, I just thought it was weird because I just woke up and my computer had restarted itself. Maybe it's a computer conspiracy!

Good luck, I hope someone is savvy and can tell you how to get your words back.

The computers of the world hate us! You're right, it is a conspiracy!

I hope there's some savvy person out there. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I haven't tried this in a while, but in the past I've had some luck with temp files. Just search anything created in the last 24 hours, and you might hit gold. *fingers crossed*

Ok, too strange mine did that last night too. I lost a story idea I'd jotted down (when it woke me up and all I managed to stay awake long enough to do is type the idea and a rough sketch up). What sucks like a sucky thing for me is my comp. doesn't auto-save and I was too groggy to save it myself. *slaps forehead*

I can beat your computer w/ a stick, if you'd like. Just let me finish killing mine first.

Mine restarted last night, too. There must be something weird going on. (Luckily for me, all I lost was a bunch of open windows of fic I'd meant to read--which is annoying but not soul-crushing. I wish I had any good advice for you.)

Okay, I expect people have probably realized this by now, but there was a Windows XP update released yesterday, which, yes, automatically restarts your computer.

Goddamn Gates.

When you see the little yellow Windows!shield with the ! in it on your toolbar, you can click on it to start an(y) available updates. While it's doing that, click "Cancel" and it will pop up with a notification screen that has a link on the bottom to CONFIGURE AUTOMATIC UPDATES. From there you can choose to NOT have them installed automatically, which is what causes the restart.
