"Breeeeeeen"

With a resigned sigh, Brennan stopped in the doorway when he heard the plaintive voice. Reaching for the light-switch he turned the light on, the quickly off again at the muffled moan the brightness brought. Gathering all his tattered patience together he entered the room, fighting against the urge to just stun the figure in the bed into silence. Effective, but ultimately maybe a little harsh -- at least for now.

"Breeeeeen. Are you there?"

At the sound of the pitiful voice, Brennan could feel the familiar tingle in his hands, and a tiny spark jumped across his fingers before he snapped his fist tight. "What do you want Jesse? The bowl's still on the floor next to you. You've had all the aspirins you can take for now. I brought you a drink not five minutes ago. I hope you don't want me to plump your pillows, that's going too far."

"I'm sorry."

"You should be. Sinking nearly a full bottle of Vodka's not a joke. You know I don't mind anyone having a good drink, I've been wasted a few times myself. But drinking alone, in your room, that's just stupid. You know better than that." Irritated Brennan sat on the side of Jesse's bed, taking satisfaction in the groan the movement caused. "You're just lucky that I found you. What would have happened if you'd massed and passed out or phased into something you shouldn't and got stuck? Because I really wouldn't have wanted to tell Adam that you were nothing but a human sized paper weight when he came back from the conference."

"That wouldn't happen..."

"How do you know? Have you been so drunk that you hurled all over your bed before? How you didn't choke I don't know."

Slowly, Jesse opened one eye, looking round without moving his head. "This isn't my room."

"No shit Einstein. I had to drag your sorry ass in here so I could strip down your bed and clean your room. You owe me big time Jesse."

"I'm sorry."

"I know, you've told me. I just wish you'd tell me why you did it." Fixing Jesse with a glare, Brennan warred between pity and anger. Jesse looked terrible, red eyed with a complexion more green than any other colour. His hair stuck up in wild clumps, still damp from where Brennan had wiped him down after he'd found him covered in his own vomit. Jesse was suffering, and the pain was written on every inch of his face.

"I didn't mean to."

Believe me if I thought you *had* meant it I'd have contacted Adam straight away, not covered for you. So spit it out already, what's so bad that you had to risk alcohol poisoning?"

"Nothing, I just got carried away that's all."

"Carried away! That's bullshit Jesse, now what's the real reason?"

Watching, Brennan felt sympathy start to win at the obvious misery on Jesse's face. He was tempted to leave Jesse in peace, allow him to sleep his misery off. But he also knew that this was his best bet to find out why Jesse had been acting like he had for the last few days. Sometimes it was best to be cruel to be kind, and this was one of those times.

"God my head's spinning." Squeezing his eyes shut Jesse clutched at the blanket with one hand. "I *really* didn't mean it. I just started thinking and one drink led to another. It's just...you were going to leave weren't you?" Confused, Brennan could only wait as Jesse continued to talk, eyes still shut tight. "With Becky and Connor, you would have left to play happy families. I could tell. You would have just walked away from us...from me so you could be a dad."

"Maybe. I loved Becky once, and Connor was a good kid." Hearing a soft sigh from Jesse, Brennan stared down at him in confusion. "I don't see how that's got anything to do with this."

"You could leave."

"But I didn't."

"I don't want you to go."

Torn between amusement and exasperation, Brennan smiled as Jesse pulled his hand from under the blanket, blindly reaching for Brennan. Grabbing the hand, Brennan tried to reassure.

"I'm not going anywhere, I promise." Jesse seemed happier, grinning as he slurred words so softly Brennan had to bend to hear them.

"Good, 'cos I love you."

Surprised, Brennan saw that Jesse had slipped into sleep, and restrained himself from shaking him, demanding to know if he meant what he said. Jesse loved him. It was all that Brennan had ever wanted, but this -- this was beyond cruel. Dismayed, Brennan tucked Jesse's hand back under the covers, then moved to the chair next to the bed. Settling down to ensure his friend didn't vomit in his sleep, and also to agonise over the fact the one thing that he wanted had been given in a drunken confession, with no way to know if Jesse meant what he said. It was going to be a long night.
