We've Got It Going On.

turpsI know there's more Nsync fans on my flist than BSB fans, but really, if you have any interest in cheesy boybands check this video out. JM knew what she was talking about when she syuggested it was a good match to I Want You Back.
I actually had to go check a few copies on You Tube because I couldn't remember that intro bit at the beginning, so thought I had the wrong vid, but no, it seems it's there and I just blocked it out.
We start with the DJ woman introducing the vid, and saying tell me about it. At which point Nick woohoos while Kevin says it's their first video. Which all I can say is, thank goodness! It means all they can do is get better.
They then move to the guys singing. They're dressed normally, well boyband normal anyway. AJ's singing solo, Howie and Brian, Nick and Kevin sharing mics. And may I say here. Kevin/Nick is my BSB OTP, but when I see videos like this I should feel shame. I know Justin was young when he started in Nsync, but he never seemed as young as Nick. Nick who spends all his time pressed against Kevin.
Action shot! With funky sycronised dancing in front of a small crowd that was probably paid to be there.
Then, what's this!? They're out washing a car now. To show us how normal they are. Just five normal boys out washing their car, getting wet and dancing. Like you do. When you're normal. WIth your little jail bait friends. Also, we cut between the car wash scene and the dancing on stage scenes, but is that a weight bench on stage? And if so, why?
Back to the outside scene and Brian is singing while the others dance behind him. Which just proves there's a book somewhere, each page with a video treatment that the boybands have to film. This one is page 1. The performance/show them we're normal video. Somewhere out there there'll be a video of a baby Jacob Underwood flipping burgers. Oh wait, that's what he's doing now. My bad.
Back to BSB!
Is that a girl washing the car with them! What a surprise! A random girl thrust in the middle of the homoerotic lovefest that is BSB getting wet.
Then basketball, which Brian is great at btw.
The girl keeps washing away at the car. Shirt tied up, then suddenly she realises she's washing that car alone! Where have the boys gone? They're off playing together of course. Because while it seems to be compulsery to have a female prescene in these early vids, in reality she's there to be ignored.
They're in the boyband forest of doom! Oh man, I want them to be a time slip and they meet TIPY NSync.
Kevin: WTF!? Is that guy wearing pants made out of squirrel fur?
JC: Hey, I least I know fashion, I mean, what's that on blondie's head? White hats are so last year.
Chris: *sidles up to Nick* I like the hat. I know a nice cafe, they have ketchup. Want to come?
Oh, Nick and Brian are all grinny and happy, and the girl is giving them the glare of doom! She wiggles her finger, Brian gets closer and she squirts him in the face with her hose. Nick meanwhile is smirking, because dude, he so squirted Brian in the face first.
They're playing pool now, and the girl's counting out money. Now either they're all really hookers, or she's bribing them to stay with her. Also, random observation. BSB spend a lot of times on their knees when they dance.
Ah, Kevin has the focus shot as he opens his arms and sings, 'we've got it going on for years' while Nick grrates behind him. No brain! BAD!
*flails* Kevin's lifting the weights. The weight bench that's on the stage for some reason. He's obviously having a macho moment, and man, he looks good doing it.
Gratuitous porn shot of Kevin tipping a bottle of water over his head. At least it wasn't Nick I suppose, and has Howie even been in this video?
Wait! Kevin's riding a motor bike with a girl. Where did she come from, because it's not the girl from before. Did the first girl hire a hooker for him? Is he the hooker? Is that why he had to show his assets by lifting weights then pouring the water?

And we end with them all behind the bike, boyband hands at the ready as they tell us they've got it going on. Yes boys, you really have.

Date: 2007-08-24 02:24 pm (UTC)Little bit of info, the DJ (Hilde from XL106.7FM in Orlando) was the very first DJ in the US to play We've Got It Goin' On, and till this day BSB still has close ties with them. They go back there for interviews and stuff whenever they have to do album promo. And yes, Lou is there. It was his first music video, and he wanted in on the action.
Most of all, I love this video because it shows AJ WITH NO TATTOOS OR HAIR DYE. The thing is all their little vignettes were clearly and deliberately chosen to market them as their respective stereotypes. And during the early days AJ kept on going on about how pool was his favourite sport, and the only thing he was ever really good at, and then, BAM. He beats a girl at pool. D'oh.
They've since talked about how they were forced to wear LEATHER JACKETS in the FOREST OF BOYBAND DOOM on the hottest day of the year, and how uncomfortable it was. I can only imagine, because, eep!
I think the American version of I Want You Back was specifically tailored to look like this video. I remember there being a lot of wank back in the day about how *NSYNC copied BSB, but seriously, they didn't have any say in anything. IT'S NOT THEIR FAULT.
What really gets me about this video is the black and white footage you see about three quarters of the way through. They're all in a circle and practising their dance moves, and oh. Just. BOYS. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH.
I'm fairly convinced that they were thinking of soft porn when they shot Kevin pouring water over himself. I would also like to point out that in the rap, AJ gets "ruthless" when he gets "wet".

It's a delightfully cheesy video, and I do love the little vignettes, but really, Howie so gets the short straw.

You can tell, but you're right. It wasn't there fault at all. I mean, they had people telling them what to do, and had to do it. I think a lot of fans forgot that when the whole wank wars were ongoing.
Kevin's shot is totally soft porn based, which seemed to be a theme in a lot of those early vids. Which admittedly, got the attention, but maybe not the kind they wanted.
