I was happily reading my flist this morning when I came to a Lance interview linked at
still_gay In it, Lance says he wants to be a fiction writer, at which point I almost fell off my chair laughing, as a few posts back
phaballa and I had this whole insane comment conversation going where Lance was this terrible badfic writer who posted at Nifty and LJ, these huge sprawling fics filled with penis euphemisms, while also making spread sheets based on his LJ toys addiction which allowed him to see who was reading his fic and not commenting. By the end he was planning another evil JC joshtin fic. So seeing Lance say he wanted to get into fiction delighted me.
Corey and James are at Scout camp at the moment. They went yesterday and will come back tomorrow morning, at which point we have to head off to a rugby game at Barnard Castle. I missed them last night; a lot. Which wasn't helped by watching this weeks Brothers and Sisters, an episode that broke my heart. Still, I had a good evening, watching what tv I wanted while reading fic. I hit the Pit of Voles because nothing cheers me up more than an insane story where Greg Sanders goes def ( their spelling not mine ) yet is still able to work as a CSI without anyone noticing. I also read a lot of bandslash stuff which totally prompted a dream where I was hanging out with Gerard before he went and killed himself. Which was a downer, I have to say.
Today I've been a total slob and have done nothing constructive at all. Just read and caught up on my shows and read and watched tv, and ate pease pudding sandwiches and read yet more fic. In fact, that's my plan for tonight too.
ETA:
msktrnanny I got your card, and confetti *g* Thank you so much!

Date: 2007-11-03 06:46 pm (UTC)Also, the other day I read a wincest fic where people kept calling Sam 'laddie', and Dean kept wondering why Sam didn't 'ring' him. Why don't people use betas?

Date: 2007-11-03 06:53 pm (UTC)I have no idea why people don't use betas. I just know they should. Even the best of writers make mistakes that a second set of eyes could pick up on.
Most people at the Pit of Voles are comment whores, nothing else. The thing is, they get the comments. I mean, the deaf Greg fic got loads of comments. All of which were just as illiterate as the story they were reviewing.

Date: 2007-11-04 05:57 pm (UTC)for things like drabbles and spur of the moment ficlets, I don't use betas but for actual stories, absolutely.
>_< I hate when that happens. OMG YOU'RE STORY IZ SOOOOOO QT AN I LURV HOW U MADE JARED AND JENSEN FALLING LURV.

Date: 2007-11-03 08:22 pm (UTC)Personally, I can almost never find anyone to beta for me. If it's not written for a challenge, I can't get anyone to do it. I would imagine other writers have difficulties finding betas as well.

Date: 2007-11-04 06:00 pm (UTC)I do think that some people just don't think they need it, honestly. I know when I first started out writing, I had no clue, and it wasn't until I'd been writing for years I figured that other people used betas.

Date: 2007-11-04 06:30 pm (UTC)then had to quit because of busy schedules
or never return the story/respond to another email after that
or simply run it or through a spellcheck and return the story with a comment such as, "I liked it", which, although appreciated, isn't much help, especially as I have a spell check and it doesn't catch certain typos which are correctly spelled, but are not the appropriate word or tense.
I had one beta I really meshed well with, but she's busy and rarely posts to LJ anymore and pretty much left the pop fandom a couple years ago. The only popslash beta comm I remember was only active for maybe a month or two. I didn't know there was a list anywhere.
I do think that some people just don't think they need it, honestly.
I'm sure that's true. I just so rarely get a response when I ask, that I usually don't bother asking anymore. But I will agree that the right beta can certainly make a world of difference! ;)

Date: 2007-11-03 06:57 pm (UTC)That was a very depressing dream! Well, the ending of it at least. It's totally because you read all those badfic at the Pit!! If you stayed with the good stories I'm sure the dream would've ended with you officiating at Gerard and Patrick's marriage! :-)

Date: 2007-11-03 07:16 pm (UTC)It was a totally depressing dream. The thought of me officiating at Gerard and Patrick's wedding is making me laugh so much.
Actually, I was just reading a Gerard/Patrick fic. Though I clicked onto it for the Pete/Mikey, the G/P was a nice surprise.
