RL update and HP questions
Aug. 27th, 2003 04:54 pmJames came home last night. They told him he could go in the morning then changed their minds and said he had to have to try and have that test again. The one where they couldn't find a vein. They still couldn't so he was discharged last night. He's okay, still feels off colour but at least he's not in pain.
I was so tired yesterday which is stupid as the most I did was get the bus to the hospital then sit about all day. When we came home James settled on the couch and chilled out. I was in my PJ's when my best friend came to visit. She stopped though, I've been friends with Jill for over 20 years so being around her in night clothes in nothing new. We gossiped while her son played with Corey. She went at midnight at which point we all collapsed to bed and woke up 12 hours later *g*
This morning we sat and watched the first Harry Potter movie, and now I have questions for Babycakes, or anyone else that wants to jump in.
I've never sat and watched the movies before, I've seen bits of the first but never just sat and watched. I've never read any of the books or seen the second film either. I'm a total newbie and am going to ask some really dumb questions here, so be warned.
Babycakes, you wrote about James Potter in your story, is that the same guy who's Harry's dad?
Snape, from fandom I thought he was evil, yet he was helping Harry in the quiddich (sp) game. What up with that?
Draco Malfoy. He's the blonde that arrives with Harry and them all, is there something in the books that make people think he's such a big deal/why he becomes such a huge character in HP fandom? It's just he doesn't seem to do much in the movie. Silver blonde hair, devastating handsome? Am I missing something or is it a case of wearing fandom coloured goggles?
Actually we've rented the second movie for tonight, that may answer my questions. If not I'll be here asking again *g*

Date: 2003-08-27 09:26 am (UTC)I'll let Babycakes answer your questions, cos she's definitely the HP pro among us, but I can still give some little answers, at least *g*
James Potter is Harry's dad, indeed. He was killed with his wife by Voldermort.
As for Draco...I remember when I watched the first movie --I'd already read the book-- I felt a little surprised at his under-represented role. I remember thinking they'd changed the importance of his role from the books to the movies. So, I'd say this is a matter of 'under-representation'.

Date: 2003-08-27 10:28 am (UTC)Snape isn't evil. He just hates Harry because he and Harry's father were rivles like Harry and Draco are. But at the same time he doesn't want anything to happen to him. There's also the being in different houses thing going on... Snape hates Gryphendor and since Harry is in that house he's going to be hard on him while favoring Draco and the other kids in his house...
Draco is basicaly the school bully, and since Harry is the school hero they are always going to be fighting. He's got more of a role in the books. Does more says more... causes more trouble, that kind of stuff.
I personally like the books better than the movies. They really had to cut a lot out and change around stuff when they made teh movies. The combined characters and cut out whole scenes. Second movie is a bit worse that way than the first but thats because the second book was longer...
I'm worried what they are going ot do with the third, fourth, and fifth books when they get to them... those the 4th and 5th ones are HUGE...

Date: 2003-08-27 11:00 am (UTC)I prefer books to movies too, I think your imagination can be so much more powerful than anything on the screen. I love reading but I never had any desire to read HP, I was put off by the hype to be honest. But I'm thinking I might have to change that view and buy the lot.
So Snape's really a grey character, not evil but not good either. I understand more now why he dislikes Harry, especially in terms of the houses.
I figured Draco must have a bigger role in the books. I've heard so much about him in fandom that his small role in the first movie didn't make sense.
You saying that they change stuff and cut it out really makes me want to read now. Thanks for answering!

Date: 2003-08-27 11:21 am (UTC)You're probably right. I know I feel a hell of a lot better now than I did yesterday.
So James is Harry's dad. When I saw the name in Babycakes story I just thought it was a random Potter. Then I saw the name on the quiddich (sp again) cup and had a moment of revelation *g*
So Draco's character has just been really cut down in the movie. I understand a little better now. It was just weird, I'm not even in the HP fandom but still heard about how many Draco fics there are. Then he was only in the movie for about ten minutes at most! So mystery solved.

Date: 2003-08-27 11:30 am (UTC)And yeap, James and Lily Potter are canon and not just characters Babycakes chose randomly *g*
I wonder if she'll have time to send a long comment about your questions, or not. That could be interesting *g* I love seeing fans talking about their stuff, always stimulating lol
This is funny actually, because since you never read the books, you don't know about Sirius Black yet, or Remus Lupin, and we're just crazy about them. Ah Sirius-- love ya, man!

Date: 2003-08-27 12:53 pm (UTC)Yeah, same here. I actually saw the first movie first, and then went to start buying the books. Have all of them now *G*
So Snape's really a grey character, not evil but not good either. I understand more now why he dislikes Harry, especially in terms of the houses.
Very grey. If you read the rest of the books you find out more about him and what he's done in the past. There's a LOT more about him and Harry's father in books 4 and 5. Very cool stuff.
You saying that they change stuff and cut it out really makes me want to read now. Thanks for answering!
Changed a bunch of stuff. For example in the first book/movie:
There was actually more than one Quitage(sp?) match.
The part where Harry and the others went with Hagrid into the forest got changed quite a bit. In the movie Ron went into the forest with them, in the book he didn't (he had to do something else). There's more with the half man half horse people...
Remember the part near the end where the kids were going down to get the stone? There's a great scene that got cut where the girl (can't spell her name) helps Harry figure out a puzzel like Ron figured out the chess game.
Oh and Ron doesn't whine quite as much in the books... don't remember how much he did in the first movie but in the second one he did whine quite a bit...
The girl isn't as much of a show off either. (okay she is but its a different tone I guess.. if that makes sense)
Actually there's a differnt tone in how all of the kids speak from the book to the movie... it could just be how I'm interprating it when I read it... who knows...
There's probably a bunch more but I can't remember exactly. All the stories are getting jumbled up in my head *G* and that's only the first book/movie...

Date: 2003-08-27 11:20 pm (UTC)you won't find too many fics with James in it (well, not smut fics... who cares about gen anyway?). As a friend of mine said, the only thing worse than having a crush on a fictional character is to have a crush on a dead married fictional character. That says it all I guess lol

Date: 2003-08-27 11:26 pm (UTC)So yeah, as I said, James Potter is Harry's father. Snape is a greasy git that I can't stand (why there are so many fics with him, I'll never understand) but who is devoted (apparently) to Dumbledore. Draco is a bully with silver blond hair, an aristocrat: same thing as Snape, he's interesting in fanon, not so much in canon - his father, now that's a different matter (you should really watch/read chamber of secrets *g*)
so yeah, you should really read the books, especially since Sirius and Remus arrive in Prisoner of Azkaban (which is being shot at the moment with Gary Oldman *sobs*)
