Because I fully believe the flist knows all.

Does anyone know why my line breaks could be collapsing when I paste from Word into LJ? I'm sure I've asked this before but I can't remember the solution.

In happier news. I'm waiting on one last check and my story is done!

OMG! Yes!

It took 5 parts to post ( I'm lame and had to check )

I'm both excited and nervous as all hell.

But somehow it's collapsed into this horrible huge block of text. Which is very annoying.

Eeee! I want this fic!

But I don't know how to help the collapse problem. :(

I'm sitting working out the master post, which is stupid as it's not even done completely yet. But soon. So soon.

I'm sure the collapsing has happened before. This is why I should use tags.

YAY for comments on BOB IN SPAAACE!! Sorry I wasn't able to help. I still owe marythefan her stuff.

I have no clue about the collapsing problem either.

You totally helped! You read at the beginning and gave great comments, and you've cheered me along all the way. That's meant so much.

The collapsing thing is very annoying...sigh.

Are you using the rich text editor or HMTL when you post? The HMTL could change your formatting from Word. Try rich text.

I tried using rich text and it keeps the breaks. But it means my italic tags are useless. Still, it's easier to fix them than put in all the line breaks.

Thank you :)

You are welcome! You should be able to make a word italic in word, and it copy over into rich text (for next time) so you don't have to put the tags/coding in.

It's probably because Word has been auto-formatting your line breaks for you, by doing it with funky Word formatty-ness instead of the return key like normal people do. The HTML editor won't recognize that formatty-ness like it does the return key. Whee.

[hugs] This is why I hate Word.

That sounds about right.

Stupid Word. I should have just done my revisions in gdocs, too.

Word sucks. (I say this as a confirmed Mac user, ahaha.)

See my technical language, too. I'm sure "formatty-ness" is used regularly by the Windows team.

What [livejournal.com profile] randomling said. You'll be using something like a paragraph style in word which is adding things which look like hard paragraph breaks but which are in fact only formatting. Try saving it as plain text and seeing how it looks, or selecting the whole file and setting the style to 'normal'.

If it is the styling which is screwed (i.e., you have one hard paragraph break between paragraphs rather than two), then you can fix that with search and replace. Search for ^p and replace with ^p^p and you'll have two breaks in every place where previously you had one. However, you'll want to scan through and make sure it hasn't done anything weird anywhere.

p.s. Do you want me to have a last look at the fight scenes? I'm okay for that, if you'd want.

That's great advice, thank you.

I'm on fixing the end now, so I'll send the fight scene you way. You're a star. Seriously.

My only suggestion re Word problem isn't very helpful I'm afraid, but it IS heartfelt: DON'T USE IT EVER :-)

It's so close to finished I can taste it!

What's annoying is I used gdocs mostly. But then did all my editing in Word. Still, I'll fix it somehow.

Did you get it fixed? One thing I often do is first copy the text from word to notepad, and from notepad to LJ. That should remove all the word-specific weirdness. :)

I fixed it in the sense I had to fix the code myself. I tried your trick and it collapsed in notepad, too. So I've no idea what was up.

I'm not sure what version of Word you're using, but 2007's default setting gives you a blank line every time you hit enter so it looks like it's not all one block of text, but when you copy-paste it into something else it is... (hopefully that is not it, because it is a pain to go back and manually set it to a different format and put all the spaces back in)

That sounds like exactly what happened :(

I've just had to go code everything myself. Still. At least it's nearly done.

I'm not sure how to solve that particular issue, but I know from personal experience that LJ does not like it when you copy and paste a document from Word. It probably has something to do with the way Word formats things. Stupid Word.

In happier news. I'm waiting on one last check and my story is done!

It's very sad making when this happens. I love using Word, but really could have done without the collapsing text. Oh well.

I hope you enjoy it. One last check and that baby will be posted.
