Feb. 21st, 2009 10:11 amA few weeks ago Sky ( our ISP/phone/satellite provider ) decided James was deceased, and shut down all our services. After many phone calls and talking to multiple people, he got that sorted. He put in a complaint, they sent a reply to his complaint, and with an added bonus, included someone's complaint attached to the email, including that person's email address, home address, bank details, account details with Sky etc. He complained about that. They said something would be sorted.
Yesterday our broadband was cut off, because while Sky switched it back on at the time of the first complaint they didn't get in touch with BT, who are actually in charge of the broadband lines, so, BT have disconnected the line. At first Sky were going to make us pay to get the line switched back on, which really, no.
As it is, it's going to take weeks. A message on the answer phone has just come through, saying, 'good news, your broadband will be switched back on the 4th March'. As a nice little touch it was a text message sent to our phone, so no actual human person had to tell us that news.
The 4th of March. For their screw up. James wouldn't get off the phone last night until he got to a senior manager, but it comes down to when BT can actually get the line redone. And they had the nerve to say, good news. Good news, I swear, if I answered the call I would have told them where to stick their good news.
Obviously I'm online now, but that's because James can get online through his mobile contract, to a very limited degree. Anything above his allowance and we have to pay. I'm going to have to cut back my online time way back. No downloading of my shows, quick scans of the flist, emailing done offline and then sent all at once.
So, sorry if it looks like I'm ignoring people, it's not by choice believe me.

Date: 2009-02-21 10:22 am (UTC)I like Sky as a provider, they're fast and with everything bundled they're cheap, but I don't trust them now.
Using James' web and walk stuff is making me nervous too. The last thing we need are over usage charges.
I'm going to email you later.

Date: 2009-02-21 10:32 am (UTC)They fucked up big time here and you guys are paying for it. Not literally, because that would have been a total travesty but still, you are.
And I can't for the life of me figure out why it would over a week to set a mistake like that straight. It's just flipping a fucking switch for goodness sake!

Date: 2009-02-21 10:25 am (UTC)It's all so stupid and frustrating. It was their mistake and they're not trying to help at all.

Date: 2009-02-22 10:48 am (UTC)Thankfully the mobile allowance is more than I thought, as long as I stay away from downloads/youtube and things like that I should be okay. But wow, that's harder than it sounds.

Date: 2009-02-21 10:43 am (UTC)Them sending you another person's info was a gross violation of privacy laws, and is actually something that could result in huge fines for them. I would be sure to mention that and let them know you could contact that person and let them know you now have their personal information.
*hugs* I hope you get something worked out quickly!

Date: 2009-02-21 10:53 am (UTC)Ok, not helping, but it always annoys me to no end. I do hope it'll get sorted out much earlier than planned, this is ridiculous.

Sounds like you're about to embark for a little trip to the past, when 56K modem was all we had. Damn.
I miss you already, I swear!

Date: 2009-02-22 10:52 am (UTC)I know! That's what's annoying me the most. As far as I'm concerned they should be bending over backwards to fix things, and that's not happening.
It is like being back in the 56k days. I'm so thankful I can get online at all, and for longer than I thought too, but downloads? No way. I just tried to sneak in a crafty CSI download and the graph thing went crazy, the numbers jumping up. So I had to cancel.
Still, at least I can still get on here and email. And being offline means the fic is moving on faster.

it sucks to be cut off like that.

Date: 2009-02-22 10:54 am (UTC)I'm so annoyed with them right now. They've offered half price Sky for the next 3 months after James threatened to rip out all the equipment and throw it outside, but the main complaint is still being dealt with.

Date: 2009-02-21 12:15 pm (UTC)Curious that they sent you such private information on another customer. Wonder if going higher up with that infor would get you any faster results. Seems like a gross violation of privacy laws. It might give you a bit of the upper hand in this if you could just reach the right person.
Hopefully things will get resolved sooner than March 4! :(

Date: 2009-02-22 10:56 am (UTC)It is a gross violation of privacy laws. That's been dealt with the higher ups at Sky, so fingers crossed something will happen with them.

Date: 2009-02-21 12:49 pm (UTC)I'd certainly push things up the ladder if possible, especially the bit about being sent someone else's confidential info! that's a legal matter just waiting to happen

Date: 2009-02-22 11:00 am (UTC)The whole situation is ridiculous, but it's that part that boggles me, because it's such a gross violation of privacy. We could have cleaned those people out, easily.

Date: 2009-02-21 02:56 pm (UTC)I have a feeling BT suffer from the same thing our biggest provider (Telia) does - i.e. being too big and safe for their own good. They have customers, no matter how they behave. Or so they seem to be thinking...

Yeah. I totally agree with you. BT are so huge they can afford to mess people about. Losing a few customers doesn't touch them

Date: 2009-02-21 03:55 pm (UTC)From a legal standpoint I am fairly sure you have a good claim for compensation. My suggestion would be to put something in writing as well as continuing to try and sort things out by telephone - written complaints tend to get treated (by most companies) with a little more seriousness. And make sure you send a copy of any complaint to ofcom, their website is http://www.ofcom.org.uk/complain/ but you can also call them on 0300 123 3333 (mon - fri between 9 and 5) so you could start the ball rolling without having to use any of your restricted internet time.
Oh and don't forget to mention they've broken the Data Protection Act by sending you someone else's details. That right there can get them a REALLY heavy fine.

Date: 2009-02-22 11:14 am (UTC)You are a star. Thank you for all that information, and especially the contact details. It's at the point now that I want them to sit up and take notice. If we can't make them do that I'm sure other official people can.

Date: 2009-02-22 08:30 am (UTC)James phoned Sky again yesterday and so far they've given us half price tv/net/calls for the next few months. Funny how they offer stuff like that when you threaten to tear out all the equipment and throw the lot outside.
