Meme time.
Mar. 4th, 2011 01:46 pmIf you had to delete all but five of your stories, which five would you keep and why? (Or ten if you're more prolific.)
Boxes ( Popslash ). This is buried in my journal somewhere and needs to be uploaded to AO3 so I can't link. This is a really early story writing wise, and it shows in many ways. But, it's also a story I love, and one which introduced me to many of my popslash friends. I wrote this as a WIP, posting parts to my journal without getting them beta read. It's something I wouldn't do now, but back then the rush of getting the parts out was amazing. Plus, it's trickc and has many elements that are classic me. I can't remember exactly as it was a long time ago, but before Boxes there were mostly scrappy BSB stories, and then suddenly here I was making Chris and JC homeless and Joey a recovering alcoholic and Justin and Lance running away from home, and then getting Chris stabbed.
Always Known ( popslash). The popslash secret santas were a huge part of my fannish life for a long time. Out of them all this is the one I like the most. It has good memories attached in terms of the writing, and the reaction I got from my recipient was fantastic. Trickyfish was never my favourite pairing, that was trickc, but strangely the trickyfish I wrote is up there as my favourites, even though I always agonised about writing Lance. Plus, I still love the end of this story, where Chris comes out during the interview and no one believes him.
Like It Says On The Can ( popslash ) Or as I like to think of it, the story where I found out more about fetish than I ever wanted to know. My popslash stories tended toward the cracked out much more than my bandom stuff. And this is cracked out in a sense, but in other ways, totally serious. It's a story about the guys of Nsync being in a fetish documentary, and meeting for the first times. I researched everything I wrote about. How to fuck a bike's exhaust, a plushie, even dolphin sex, and you know what? I remain proud of this story.
When Day is Night Alone ( bandom ) This story has so many good memories. Not only was I writing it for
castalie who's been a friend for a long time, but I was plotting it out with
sperrywink and
arsenicjade both of whom are fantastic friends. My memories of this time are a lot of writing, and emailing Sperrywink and Arsenic often, and being amused at the different reactions I'd get to those emails when I said what I planned next. The story remains the one I look at when I want to remind myself I can maintain a plot over a lot of words, and that it is possible to juggle a lot of characters. Though I still wish I could have managed to write more Ray and Jon, and in my self-indulgent moments, I want to write thousands more words of Mikey and Pete running Clan house.
Sound Tracking ( bandom ) or as it was called in the writing process. Bob in Spaaaaaaace! What you have to know until this story I was convinced I was incapable of writing anything long. Then this story happened. It's the story of mine that's the tightest plot wise imo, and that's due to
nopseud who wouldn't let me get away with any sloppy writing. Which is something I'm very glad about. My main memory of this story is being told to rewrite the scene where Ray's saved from the slave planet multiple times. I came so close to just killing him off then and saving him be damned, but due to nopseud's pushing and encouragement, the scene worked in the end. It was also a lesson that sometimes you have to delete and re-write repeatedly to get something right, and when you do all the effort will be worth it. It was also a lesson about how even though really nasty things have gone on in the background of a story, you don't have to outright state that to get an impact.
Tints of Rainbow Hue/ Grey Crimson Skies ( bandom) Sometimes I'm surprised Tints is as short as it is, as it always feels much longer to me. Out of all my stories I remain stupidly proud of this series. That it touched so many people is an amazing thing and I'll always remain -- man, I don't even know what word I need here. Just, the comments I've received have touched me. Mainly what I wanted with the first story was to play with themes, life and death, light and dark, and from that came a whole series. Plus, an ending where things weren't magically fixed.
Then I wrote Grey Crimson skies for the rps big bang. It was a risk writing in the verse again. I had done one mini story ( Richard of York ) for Sperrywink, but that focussed only on Mikey and Frank, so actually going for more plot was something I debated about for a while. But I'm glad I did write a follow up, to show that they all could have a happy ending, even if that happy ending was something as simple as feeling better at that time, or getting disability money in order to be able to live. It's a universe I think about sometimes, but I very much doubt I'll write in it again. Their story has been told, and it would be unrealistic to go back in and make everything shiny and wonderful.
Sing the Revolution ( bandom) This story pushed me writing wise, and that's a good thing. It made me think about so many things, and also showed that sometimes you have to take things apart to make them work. Which I had to do when I realised the two person POV wasn't cutting it, so had to go back and add a third. It was also the story where I actually started to add sex scenes to my stuff, and man, didn't I complain about that to my poor betas. There are scenes I love in this story, especially the ones where Gerard is helping Mikey dress with Frank watching. It's an example of hitting exactly what I wanted to show, actions moving the plot on without excess dialogue, and each time I've re-read my heart aches for Gerard when he leaves the room.
The M and G Thing ( bandom) I make no secret of the fact that I love the Ways, a lot, so picked this one as a story I'd like to keep. It's an early story and kind of quiet, but I still like it a lot.
For An Audience of One I'll do anything to get out of writing a sex scene. Fade to black, add 5k of angst and woe, put someone in a coma, anything to skirt the sex issue. I love reading it, I love thinking about those scenes, but I always have trouble actually writing them down. Which is why I'm so proud of writing what's basically a pegging pwp. One that's actually hot on re-reading. I'm never going to be one of those writers who can easily throw out thousands of words of smokin' hot porn, but I have found if I concentrate on how things look it's easier. I'm playing mind games with myself really, if I'm writing about how it looks when Victoria grabs hold of Mikey's hair, how he exposes his neck and bows his back as she fucks him, well, that's just me writing what I'm mentally seeing, because if I think of what I'm writing it's game over. And I know, that doesn't make much sense /o\
And the Embers Never Fade So many of my stories are tied into my friends, and this is another of those. This started off as a comment conversation in various journals, mostly mine and
crowgirl13's. I think about this story and I think about laughing with
themoononastick about Bob's Barbie pink jeep and how he stole it. And with T as we discussed what Gerard would draw on the side and how spark plugs were Bob's way of showing affection and sharing snippets of the very start of the story with Mikey so surly and Bob so grumpy as they were forced together. It's also a story I'm proud of due to the world building. I love world building a lot and while MCR started it, including my own additions was fun. The family camps and how the wives fitted in with them, the way Patrick was running his own kind of rebellion. It was a story I enjoyed writing, and those are the best kind I think.
I could add so many, Graves which is tied so strongly to Arsenic, the more humour based ones due to something T said when she reminded me that while I do write a lot of long h/c, angsty fic, I can and do write humour too, Linchpin and how amazing it is to have a verse with Sperrywink where Pete/Mikey/Frank are a solid thing. Walk like a camelidae: the doctor dolittle talk talk mix with LLance the llama. I love and would want to keep them all.
Now other people should do this so I can read their favourite fic.

Date: 2011-03-04 08:18 pm (UTC)I will always think of Sound Tracking as "my" story because of how it started out. I love it so very much, particularly the world building. It's been a long time since I read it last, I think it's time for a re-read.

Date: 2011-03-05 04:03 pm (UTC)Well that's good, because it is your story, it was written due to you after all.

Date: 2011-03-04 02:13 pm (UTC)I really need to post the rest of my popslash stuff to AO3. I've been a horrible slacker.
And of course all my Nsync icons are greyed out. Pretend they're up there *g*

Date: 2011-03-04 02:31 pm (UTC)One thing I've found in bandom is depending on who you talk to you can get very different rec lists, not that I'm expecting to be on them, because man, talk about egotistical.
I'm glad that you are. I love reading about fic.

Date: 2011-03-04 03:19 pm (UTC)Lol. I know the feeling. You hope people like your stuff, and it's a lovely feeling to be recced, but you never dare assume. :)
I posted it! It's all original fic though. So I don't know that people care so much. :)

Date: 2011-03-04 02:30 pm (UTC)I love to read other people talking about their writing though :)
EDIT: *sigh* I really need to make "RE-READ before you POST" my mantra. Although the point is, if I had to keep 5 stories, I wouldn't have to choose! lol

Date: 2011-03-04 02:32 pm (UTC)I love reading that stuff too. Though if they do I'm going to end up with 200 tabs.

Date: 2011-03-04 03:14 pm (UTC)Plus, it allows me to think of them on the carousel and them with flowers in their hair.
I really hope they do. I want all the story talk!

Date: 2011-03-04 03:30 pm (UTC)I almost bolded that, too. Just so you know, if you didn't keep it, I would.
I posted the Lambs Epic the same way you did Boxes, each new part the second it was done, unbeta'd, because I was just so excited. That remains to this day the best writing experience I've ever had.
I know I haven't read any of it, but if your bandom stuff is anything like your popslash, then it's amazing.
There's no way I could whittle down to five, I'd have to go with ten. This may be just the right way to spend my afternoon, thanks!

Date: 2011-03-04 04:01 pm (UTC)It was a lot of fun revisiting my popslash stories. Some I'm debating ever putting up at AO3, but most I still like a lot, and of course they remind me of a fandom that will always hold my heart.
I remember you posting the Epic, and am glad you had as much fun writing as we did reading. Posting on the fly like that is an amazing thing. Posting and writing Boxes was nothing like how I write now. It was all about getting the story out and posting without worrying about making things perfect. It was a good time.
Enjoy revising your stories ♥

Date: 2011-03-04 05:37 pm (UTC)Posting the Epic was so much fun, but yeah, I'd probably never do something like that now. 82,000 words that no one but me saw until they went up. Yikes.

Date: 2011-03-04 06:39 pm (UTC)I also most definitely agree with the choice of When Day is Night Alone, Sound Tracking, Tints of Rainbow Hue/ Grey Crimson Skies and The M and G Thing. Not that I don't like the others you listed but those are my Most Favourite of Your Fics.

Date: 2011-03-04 06:56 pm (UTC)And I am so happy that Tintsverse made the list. you know how much I love that series especially Richard of York, of course.
I love you talking about your stories too. It is fun to get some insights and see what you thought when you wrote them.

Date: 2011-03-04 07:27 pm (UTC)Tints verse. That verse. It's weird because in one way I want to write about them always, but at the same time, I know they are done. Anything else would spoil things.
I'm glad you liked those details. I always think it's boring because I never remember why I write in a certain way, just that I did. Funnily enough many of my memories are of your reactions to my emailed plans, like when I gave Brendon food poisoning or told you about branding someone. You're great to talk that stuff with *g*

Date: 2011-03-04 08:20 pm (UTC)I have not read your popslash but I know your bandom is super nifty
now I'm thinking about doing this meme but I don't know that I could cap it at 10. was it hard for you narrowing things down?
no subject
Date: 2011-03-04 08:26 pm (UTC)It was hard, I have a core group of stories I love beyond all others, but just above those are ones I like a lot but don't reach the all time favourites. It was those that I had trouble with.
You should do it. It would be fascinating to read.

Date: 2011-03-04 08:45 pm (UTC)It looked hard..hell I have my masterpost up and just scrolling I'm pinpointing fics and going but I like this one because of this...or that one because of that. I mean FBI Verse and Moon Verse are sure to be on the list
I think I'm going to(instead of trying to write) so you'll be able to see how hard this was for me as well because shesh I have alot of fic(the good thing is about 40ish of them are moon verse and fbi verse stuffs)
