Jun. 23rd, 2011 06:41 pmWhile I did catch up on LJ/DW yesterday I didn't write one email or read one story. I blame my flist/twitter people for this as between them they kept talking about Mikey's neck, and also facials, which was an excellent addition to my mental images.
There was also talk of vampire hunters, which made me think of this.

And this one to continue the neck theme, just because.

Now something I saw on friendsfriend which I thought I'd try, where I get to talk about my writing. At least it makes a change from obsessing over Mikey's neck, yeah?
Thirty Days of Fanfic -- Day One.
How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?
(1) It was all
castalie's fault. Many of you will have heard this before, but I've been friends with Mouse for a long time. We fell into many new fandoms together, reading a ridiculous amount, and one of those was The Sentinel. We pretty much read our way through 852 Prospect and swapped all these emails about Blair, because we were major Blair Babes -- oh man, the old terminology slips back into place so easily, I feel the need to shout, HE'S DAMP NOT DEAD! now.
In one of those emails I wrote this thing about Jim coming in Blair's hair ( TS fandom was obsessed with Blair's hair so it made sense at the time ) I'd never had any real urge to write before that, and pretty much accidentally fell into it, as we encouraged each other to write more and then post.
It was Blair that pulled me in. I'm very much a One True Character person, any fandom I enjoy has that one person I love, and in TS it was Blair. He was cute, opinionated, brave, obviously adored Jim and was a trouble magnet, which of course meant the fandom was full of stories where he was shot, beaten up, raped, attacked, drowned, abused etc. There wasn't a chance I wouldn't be pulled in.
So that was the start of it all. No writing in note books when I was a kid or dreams to write a book. Just emails swapped with a good friend and a Sentinel coming in his Guide's hair.
The List
1 – How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?
2 – Name the fandoms you've written in, and how much you've written in that fandom, and if you still write in it.
3 – For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favorite characters to write?
4 – Do you have a "muse" character, that speaks to you more than others, or that tries to push their way in, even when the fic isn't about them? Who are they, and why did that character became your muse?
5 –If you have ever had a character try to push their way into a fic, whether your "muse" or not, what did you do about it?
6 – When you write, do you prefer writing male or female characters?
7 – Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character?
8 – Do you write OCs? And if so, what do you do to make certain they're not Mary Sues, and if not, explain your thoughts on OCs.
9 – Pairings – For each of the fandoms from day two, what are your three favorite pairings to write?
10 – Pairings – Have you ever gone outside your comfort zone and written a pairing you liked, but found you couldn't write, or a pairing you didn't like, and found you could?
11 – Genre – do you prefer certain genres of fic when you're writing? What kind do you tend to write most?
12 – Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" fic of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom?
13 – Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?
14 – Ratings – how high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever written higher? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the story you're writing is G-rated instead?
15 – Warnings – What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what's the strangest thing you've warned for in a fic?
16 – Summaries – Do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?
17 – Titles – Are they the bane of your existence, or the easiest part of the fic? Also, if you do chaptered fic, do you give each chapter a title, or not?
18 – Where do you get the most inspiration for your fics (aka "bunnies") from?
19 – When you have bunnies, do you sit down and start writing right away, or do you write down the idea for further use?
20 –Do you ever get bunnied from other people's stories or art in the same fandom?
21 – Sequels – Have you ever written a sequel to a fic you wrote, and if so, why, and if not, how do you feel about sequels?
22 – Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?
23 – When you post, where do you post to? Just your journal? Just an archive? Your own personal site?
24 – Betaing – How many betas do you like to use to make sure there aren't any major flaws in your fic? Do you have a Beta horror story or dream story?
25 – Music – Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain "mood" to write your fic? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?
26 – What is the oddest (or funnest) thing you've had to research for a fic?
27 – Where is your favorite place to write, and do you write by hand or on the computer?
28 – Have you ever collaborated with anyone else, whether writing together, or having an artist work on a piece about your fic?
29 – What is your current project or projects?
30 – Do you have a favorite fic you've written? What makes it your favorite? And don't forget to give us a link!

omens has made me want a bandom version of Lost Boys. People Are Strange would so be a Way song.

*snicker* You're so predictable!
What an awesome meme!! I really hope more people on my flist/droll will do it. I love hearing writers natter on about their writing.

It's nothing sleazy *g*
The last ep of season 3 ended on a cliff hanger where Blair had been drowned in a fountain, and no one knew if he was alive or not.
Then the show was cancelled. The fans were up in arms and damp not dead became a catch phrase, and eventually they did get a fourth season.
*snicker* You're so predictable!
I really am :D
I hope so too, there are some interesting questions in there.

Date: 2011-06-23 06:39 pm (UTC)That's positively innocent! I'd heard about it of course but never the slogan. (It's weird how much you pick up about fandoms you've never been in, just through fannish osmosis! It was fun to see that episode at Camp Sparkle though. My first Sentinel! :-)

Date: 2011-06-23 06:46 pm (UTC)Sentinel is a fun show, dated of course and some episodes are terrible, but you can tell why it made such a huge impact in slash fandom.

Date: 2011-06-23 09:14 pm (UTC)I'm glad that you didn't do that either. Sometimes it seems that I'm surrounded by people who've been writing forever, and I haven't at all. It's just something I enjoy doing and fell into by accident.

Date: 2011-06-24 05:00 am (UTC)I've always told stories--made them up and play-acted them out. It took me until I went to university to start writing them down. Now I won't want to miss writing. :D

I never got into TS because I was watching something else (though I can't remember what exactly.) BTW, that's some intro into fanfic. O_o

Date: 2011-06-27 06:19 pm (UTC)You know, I've been thinking and I can't remember any. Apart from those swag room pictures which remain amazing. I mean, I never thought I'd see Bob and Mikey displaying jeans *g*
Obviously they need to go to more gift grabs, I want to see Gerard pimping hair dye.
Vampire hunter Ways. So much love. Why do all the crossovers we want not exist.
Yeah. Blair's hair was such a huge thing in that fandom, and both Mouse and me loved talking kink, so the two sort of meshed.

Date: 2011-06-23 06:32 pm (UTC)I have so many horrible snippets for TS that were posted for dues on the sentinel angst list. Ones I hope never see the light of day away from that mailing list.
It was a good fandom to cut your writing teeth on, but I was always terrified something of mine would end up on Prospect L. Thankfully I was well below their radar.

And I am still working on my reply to yesterday's shenanigans. Vamp! Pete has a lot to say, so it's taking a while to get back to the bared Mikeyway neck that started it all.
And that meme's cool.
And and *HUGS*

Date: 2011-06-23 07:41 pm (UTC)Of course I wouldn't want fic that mimics the movie completely because I like my vamps alive -- aliver -- the vamp version of alive -- you know what I mean!
I'm not surprised at all that Pete's running his mouth off. He's a very talkative man at times.
It is a cool meme. Though some I could answer with two words. Summaries. Hate them! Titles. Hate them!
*smooches you* It's so lovely to see you around more.

Date: 2011-06-24 04:16 am (UTC)How would you cast this? The Ways are the Emerson boys, right? Who are the Frog Brothers then? Or... is it Pete as 'David' and Mikey being drawn into the vamp lifestyle? There's Star, Laddie, Marco, Paul and Dwayne in the vamp camp. Oh, and Max, the older vamp. Then Grandpa and Lucy Emerson. Hmmmmmmm...
He sure is! The dude has lots of opinions! [And he's currently giving me all this world-building. Which is great and all, but this is just a wee fic, Pete!]
*grins* I'm trying to be around properly. I miss you! Still behind on comments, but I'm working on that too. ♥

Date: 2011-06-23 09:01 pm (UTC)And Yay! for Sentinel. I dabbled in that fandom as well - and I have no idea how I got in it, as I'd never seen the show and didn't know anyone who wrote in it. I wasn't on any lists or anything but did read everything voraciously :-)
no subject
Date: 2011-06-23 09:12 pm (UTC)I hadn't seen the show either at first, and in fact it was ages before I did. I bought them from another fan who used to produce copied videos of each season, and then had a marathon when they arrived.
There's some amazing fic in the fandom, and as first active fandoms go, I picked a good one.
no subject
Date: 2011-06-23 09:19 pm (UTC)I've still only seen 2 episodes of Sentinel, that a friend kindly videoed for me (even though she wasn't into the fandom herself.) Same friend got me the soundtrack for Christmas as well, which was lovely :-)

Date: 2011-06-23 11:29 pm (UTC)We pretty much read our way through 852 Prospect and swapped all these emails about Blair, because we were major Blair Babes
We did, didn't we? Damn, that brings me back ♥ ♥ And if I'm not mistaken (and I could be because it was such a long time ago) but wasn't the first TS fic I rec'ced you No Man Island any more (or No Man is an Island Any More or something like that) which started right after Blair's gang rape? #SoTypicalOmg
Blair was (and still is, I guess) such a wonderful specimen of AM, wasn't he? And why didn't the AM acronym become popular? It should have! Abused Male. Described so many characters in so many fandoms!!
That's an interesting (and fun) meme, I know I'll enjoy reading your future answers :-)
no subject
Date: 2011-06-27 05:45 pm (UTC)Really, it seriously is. I don't think I'd have ever got started writing without your support back then. That first ficlet and being there when I first actually posted to a mailing list.
but wasn't the first TS fic I rec'ced you No Man Island any more (or No Man is an Island Any More or something like that) which started right after Blair's gang rape? #SoTypicalOmg
YES IT WAS!
Meeting of like minds for sure. Also, can you remember disliking Jim at first?
AM should have become more popular, because there is examples in every fandom. Really we were blazing a trail and people just didn't see it.
My answers have been very unsurprising so far *g*

today apparently I'm writing more of dark fic...instead of SPN AU(my lofty goal is to have part one finished today..then I can decide if I really want to tell the other half or not)

Date: 2011-06-27 07:11 pm (UTC)oddly enough I think you're still on the doc add in list(and yeah I really have no clue why I mentioned that other than as a fun fact). The Fic's changed sooo much from the initial idea in ways...but also in other ways it fits better. YAY for main character gen with allusions to background pairings and imagery heavy liek WHOA.
