Showing more of its little quirks my computer has reset its date so that it's apparently still May. Handy for those emails you send and pretend that you really did send them on time. Thunderbird also stopped checking for new emails, so I rebooted and the session saver kicked in with a saved session from a few weeks ago, and deleted the draft of the email I'd saved. Fail, Silver. Fail!
Anyway, have a meme. Comment to this post and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given. If you do want 5 things tell me or I'll just natter on about anything. I tend to do that.
I got these 5 from
greedy_dancer and rambled on disgracefully.
Mikey Way -- It was Pete that first pulled my attention toward bandom, but it was Mikey who brought me fully over. I think he's smoking hot, but there's so much more than that. I love that he's had all these crazy hairstyles and somehow pulls them off. I love that he changes image -- popped collars anyone -- but also has clothes that he loves to death -- his band t-shirts, stripy hoodie, THE BOOTS OF SEX! I love that he has no shame at all about being a geek and is so ridiculously random, going from obsessing about Teen Wolf to meat chairs to worrying about being a good uncle. I love that he's exactly how we all expected on twitter -- obsessed. I love that he has this wide circle of friends and that he keeps in touch with so many people, like Pete and Joe and Hey Chris to name a few. I love that he shared a place with Frank and made out with Gabe and has a series of in-jokes with Pete. I love that he so obviously thinks Gerard is the best big brother ever! and that his band is his family. I love that while he doesn't smile in photos or in most footage if you watch behind the scenes he laughs and jokes and has a great time. I love that all the others said he was the one most likely to get all the girls and that he was such a fixture on the scene. I love that he's struggled through serious problems and came out the other side. Gerard gets a lot of credit for getting clean -- deservedly so, but Mikey suffered through similar issues and other kinds, until finally, after breakdowns and heavy medication and therapy he appears so much happier. I love that he wants to show the world how much he loves Alicia and that his pets are so important to him. I love that while he's not the youngest in the band he'll always be seen that way. I love his knock knees and beautiful mouth and magnificent arched eyebrows.
There's a lot of things to love, but mostly I respect him. A lot.
castalie -- I'm sure most people will know but I met Mouse forever ago. I've been on LJ 7 years and I knew her well before then, so in online terms it's been a lifetime. While I won't say I've watched her grow up, because she was an adult when we met, I have watched as she made her place in life, and that's so incredibly cool.
We actually met on The A Slash Mailing list. Which as the name suggests, is a mailing list for A Team slash. I'd posted something about h/c -- I know, you're all shocked -- and she replied agreeing and saying she was almost my neighbour as she lived in France. Which was the start of it all. We have almost identical taste in fic and the people we love, so much so that when that's different my world rocks a little. Like the fact she prefers Merlin and me Arthur. How the heck did that happen?
She's one of the people I know will never judge me, whatever I may say and has been there for me often through the years, even the times when other people would have walked away. We've exchanged emails, fic links and talked every subject under the sun. She encouraged me to write and post my first story and she's also a kick-ass writer herself. She's funny, gorgeous, has this wonderful zest for life, and if I didn't like her so much I'd be jealous. As it is, she's Mouse. My friend.
The Sentinel -- This was Mouse's fault. She emailed one day very excited about this awesome archive she'd found. That archive was 852 Prospect, and we both fell in love. Devouring stories and swapping links and just drowning in Jim and Blair. Neither of us had seen the show, and wouldn't for a long time, and at first we weren't keen on Jim at all. Mainly because in fic he could be written really badly as some kind of insensitive jerk. But it didn't take long to start finding Jim awesome too, swapping funny quotes and while we remained Blair babes, Jim was just as special.
I bought the first two seasons of The Sentinel from someone on the lists. I got this box filled with VHS tapes complete with specially printed Jim and Blair labels, and I put the first one in and just beamed, because it was The Sentinel, the show I'd learned to love through fic. Now, TS isn't actually a good show, the writing is terrible at times but what it has is two characters who clearly adore each other and are easily one of the slashiest couples on tv.
I had a lot of fun with TS, I wrote my first fic ever for the fandom, posted my first fic at 852, I was there as there was a swing from the lists to LJ, and of course all the years running
sentinel_thurs The love for the show and fandom will always remain.
Gardening AU -- There are three stories I'm incredibly proud of writing in bandom, and this is one of them. The first tiny idea came at Camp Sparkle, talking about gardening AUs with
msktrnanny, though what I ended with was nothing like we talked about. It was a story built around a concept, which is something new for me. Light against dark. Death against life. Where Mikey and Gerard were very much in the dark as opposed to Frank, Ray and Bob who were all light.
I did a lot of research for this, because I was always aware that severe depression is a serious subject and I would have hated to insult anyone with careless writing. As it is I've received so many comments about this story, both in private and public saying it resonates with people, and that's...well, I don't have the words to say what a compliment that is, that something I wrote can do something like that.
It's a universe I fell in love with as I wrote, Frank with his flower-painted boots and torn overalls and dyed hair. Bob so strong and solid and just there. Ray, so kind despite the fact giving so much attention to the Ways had to be a risk to his firm. Mikey who was holding the house, his job and Gerard together and was afraid to reach out for his own happiness. And Gerard, screwed up in so many ways, but hanging in there, even if it's only by his fingernails. I'm writing in the universe now and I'm going to miss it when it's over.
I'm also amused that I do have a gardening AU as I don't garden at all. Which is why I have many NJ garden centers bookmarked.
The UK -- I've never lived anywhere else, and I do like living here. I like that I don't have to worry about medical costs, because the thought of not being able to see a doctor or get medication you need because you can't afford is horrible. I like that within ten minutes I'm at the beach or into deep countryside. I love the sense of history and that there's such a mixture of tiny villages and sprawling cities.
I'm not that keen on how insular some people are and about the royal family. The fact that people are expected to curtsy or bow to someone just because of their name and the family they were born into bothers me. Sure, certain members of the royal family work really hard, but so do millions of other people and we're not expected to bow to them. I think it's old fashioned and actions that belong to another age. We're not serfs bringing offerings of cows and crops to the castle gates, I'll keep my respect for people that deserve it.
Finally, go vote for the fifth entry for the First Annual
mikeyway_daily Planet Awesome Graphics Challenge, right here. And look back through the entries if you've missed any this week, because if you have you've missed good stuff.
Anyway, have a meme. Comment to this post and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given. If you do want 5 things tell me or I'll just natter on about anything. I tend to do that.

When I was brand new to bandom, a friend was sort of giving me the run-down on various bandom people, and I remember two things very clearly about that conversation. I remember her saying "and then there was Bob and they didn't even know if he could drum but they still wanted to KEEP HIM FOREVER because he was so awesome, and also he rescues puppies;" and also saying "yadda yadda Mikey Way's dominatrix boots." Both of those things made me go "WHAT? WHAT? I MUST KNOW MORE!"

Date: 2009-06-05 04:08 pm (UTC)Ahahahaha. I love your story so much. It shows why Bob got your attention from the first, but also, omg, Mikey's boots! I'll mourn if they ever fall apart. Saying that, I suspect he'd get them mended at great cost before getting rid of them. They're amazing!

Date: 2009-06-05 07:17 pm (UTC)Just implies such interesting things, you know?
Hmmm, yes, I do. Mikey's so often written as submissive, and while I can get behind well written submissive fic, I wish there was more where he's the one obviously in control.
You can totally have five things. Some of which are the same as you gave me, simply because I'm interested.

Date: 2009-06-05 07:24 pm (UTC)Yeah, of the smutty fic I've read where Mikey is a part of the pairing, the ones where he's in control are by far my favorites. I haven't read a lot of Mikey/whoever smutty fic, but the ones where he's submissive tend to make him out as...it's almost like he's not entirely there. Like he's this little nothing person with a head full of air who needs to be controlled and babied, and, just. I don't know, maybe I've watched different interviews and documentaries and stuff than everybody else, because I don't see that at all. Or, I guess I should say, I see somebody with an actual personality, which I think would make for interesting characterization whether the story has him in control or not; but I've found Mikey-with-a-personality mostly in fics where he is the one in control.
...I think I just talked myself in circles there. Um. Sorry.
But yes, I agree with what you said.

Also loved your other answers; I so approve of everything you said about Mikey? And TS, man, talk about a trip down memory lane! Date: 2009-06-08 12:01 am (UTC)So:
Dogs: When I touch one, it's like all the things in my life that hurt just don't. Especially the ones that kind of shuffle toward me and whine for more. The ones with two different color eyes, or that are shy, or somehow less than perfect. But also the ones that are purebred. Doesn't matter. I prefer big dogs--I like to wrap myself around them and fill my arms with them. I feel less empty.
Tony DiNozzo: I always have a thing for the vulnerable ones, and it took me forever to get it, but in two tiny moments, I knew Tony was going to wiggle his way in and never let me go. One was the look he gave Kate--the slight shift in the expression in his eyes--when the ATF agent in the first season ended up being the perp and he was trying to say that when he was serious about relationships that it was very different from just having a fling. The second was his throwaway line, also in the first season, about his father always saying he'd end up in the gutter. After that, honestly, no matter how much he annoyed me, there were always these moments where he also just made my stomach TWIST. I think when I finally write the story I plan to about Tony, a lot of how I feel about him will become clear.
Hermione Granger: Hermione is the girl I want to be and the girl I want to have. And she's so much more than that. There's a brilliant line in a book by Marisha Pessl about how a character who is written can only be as smart as the writer. When I was writing Hermione, I always felt smarter than I am, I always felt like someone more than me. Her loyalty, her bravery, and her bone-deep kindness all rest in my heart the way very few things do. She's not perfect. She can be petty and mean and she can use her knowledge in ways she shouldn't, and that only makes me love her more. She is, in some ways, a pinnacle character for me.
Swing Dancing: When I'm dancing with a good partner, even though I'm really NOT all that good, I feel amazing. I feel graceful and pretty and I can't help but smile. I also love watching. The way people just make things up, the way the follows twist and turn and laugh. It's-- I dare you not to smile while you're watching/dancing. I've never been able.
Ryan: Ryan had me from the moment I saw a picture of him. I wasn't ready to admit it at the time, and I wouldn't be for long after, but one glimpse of ONE of his big brown eyes and I just. Fell. When Luc started telling me about his dad, it only got worse. And I know people get on him for being pretentious in those first years, and yeah, I guess, but I've known a lot of pretentious people and he struck me more as YOUNG and UNSURE than anything else, and like I said, vulnerability: it's my kryptonite. I think, in a lot of ways, Ryan is very open with his vulnerability and there's something that I CANNOT give up in that, not even when he's making me want to hit him. I suppose that's love.
