I ended up at Moo Bears both Saturday and Sunday at the weekend. Each visit went well, and helped keep Bodhi entertained, and contained which is important. They had character mascots turn up on both days. Sonic the first day, Dougie from Hey Dougie the second. Bodes was fine for the first, she knows Sonic to look at but has no real emotional attraction to him. But Dougie is one of her favourites and she got a bit overwhelmed seeing him.
I had to laugh on the Saturday visit. Moos have some new staff members atm and they'll still learning the ropes. They'd had Dougie as the mascot on the Friday, too, but instead of putting the costume away behind the scenes had left it in the foyer. As Dougie is a rather rounded shape, it was easy to see him, apparently unskinned and balancing on his head. After a few kids asked why Dougie was there and also upside down, three staff member carried the costume through the café, trying to hide the identity with a carefully held binbag. I was highly amused watching, and bet they never forget to put the costumes away again.
Weight management class yesterday was about metabolism, and was really interesting
It was fascinating how different foods and exercise can make such a big difference to how many kilojoules your body burns, both when just existing or while being active. It all got a bit scientific, but in a good way. In questions, I asked if I would have affected my metabolism due to a long history of extreme yo yo dieting, and Rosie said yes, but it could be repaired. It'll take time, but if I keep on doing what I'm doing, it can be done.
They always share the slides and talks via email at the end of the week, and this is one I'll be reading again.
The exercise part was a lot of upper body strength work, along with the dreaded three level step. There were also squats, where if you wanted to put in extra effort, you could do the squats holding two 6kg weights. At which point, Rosie gave me the eye and said that she knew I could do those, so would expect me to do that effort. Called out by Rosie, man. I need to stop telling her what get up to.
But, a small but good thing. When I was leaving, the lady I'm friendly with asked if I was walking home or getting a lift. Well, I was walking, so we walked up together. And this is the same lady who, on one of my first classes, passed me sitting on the wall at the top of the first hill on the walk home, and I remember saying to her, I'd know I was getting fitter when I could walk up without stopping for a rest at the top. Well, I did walk up, talking all the time, and then kept walking. So yes, a small but a nice realisation.
I called into the chemist after class, and they finally had my new compression wraps, it only took nearly two months for them to arrive. So I've been wearing those today.
This morning, it was James' physio appointment at 8:30, a time we'd picked, so there was a chance to get parking, and that worked nicely. As always, I was half expecting him to be discharged from physio, but he's still not there yet. So, next appointment is in six weeks. After leaving the physio dept we headed for the hospital canteen for breakfast, and not going to lie, it was delicious. I love beans that have been stewing away, and the hospital scrambled egg is always tasty.
Then after that I went on a tour of some of the charity shops, and got more dresses in the next size down. Very nice they are too. The biggest charity shop we went to had a fabulous selection, as they've a huge shop over two floors, but strangely, they didn't have a fitting room meaning I had to take a chance on things fitting. Thankfully, three dresses did, and the one that didn't was just a touch too tight. So, for a grand total of £25 I've got seven new to me dresses.
It's been such a nice, sunny day today, it's been good to be out walking around, even if it was just to appointments and shops. Then, when I was taking the recycling out I saw the first daffodil had opened in the garden, a lovely reminder that spring really is close.

Date: 2025-02-27 04:55 pm (UTC)I still think back to them trying to move Dougie's costume and want to laugh all over again. I really don't know what they were thinking leaving it where they did.
Thank you!

Date: 2025-02-26 12:41 am (UTC)It's so wonderful how well you're doing with your class! And yes, do your squats! I read an article once that said the single MOST IMPORTANT exercise a person can do as they age is a squat! Seniors need their leg strength to be able to get up off a chair or bed, and need their balance. The reason so many seniors fall and insure their hips and such is a lack of balance and leg strength. So yeah, keep up those squats! Even if I've done nothing else all day, I do squats while I brush my teeth at night, so I always get a little bit in.
Another thing to work on is balance. Remember when I had Plantar Fasciitis? I was SHOCKED that I couldn't balance on one foot for more than a few seconds. It was frightening how quickly a person can lose their balance. So that's something else I work on a lot. I'll stand on one foot for a minute, then switch. I often do that when I'm cooking as my stove timer has seconds. Or if I have something in the microwave - like a can of soup. I often microwave things for 2-1/2 minutes or so, which gives me at least a minute of balancing on each foot! So yeah, those are two worthwhile things people can do to keep their balance in shape (and prevent accidents) as they age!
It's awesome how much fitter you've become and that you're able to walk and talk without stopping now. Go you!
Congrats on your new dresses! Any kitty prints?
(I know that's not Ozzie in the icon, but it is his birthday day! LOL)

Date: 2025-02-26 04:35 pm (UTC)I so agree about the importance of squats, and like you say, they're so easy to do. My MiL is staying with me for a few days and her mobility is so bad that it's making me want to work on my leg strength even more. Loss of mobility is terrible, and I really don't want to be one of those people where even standing up from a chair feels impossible.
I do have to work on my balance more. I don't know if you remember me talking about a balance exercise we did in class and I found it so difficult. I really need to copy you and work on balancing, even if it is only for short amounts of time.
I feel so much fitter now, still no gym bunny, but I'm happy about being able to walk long distances, especially when they include hills!
Sadly no kitty print dresses *g*
Happy birthday to the little trouble maker Ozzie!

Date: 2025-02-26 05:21 pm (UTC)The worst time for me is late fall going into winter. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, I tend to eat not only way too much, but way too many sweets and junk food (often in the form of gifts). Then when it's cold and snowy, I do not want to go outside and walk. It's just miserable and boring! So yeah, it's tough. We're now just starting to warm up, so I need to push myself more to go outside and walk.
I think Ozzie had a good birthday! We played fetch twice, and he came to snuggle a couple times. I built him his combo cat cave/cat bed out of my comforter (I don't always remember), so he can go under or on top. He seemed pretty happy!

Date: 2025-02-27 04:57 pm (UTC)I know your weather is much more extreme than we get here, and I find it hard enough to motivate myself when it's cold outside so it must be so much worse for you. Getting out and walking is so much easier when it's warmer. I'm especially reluctant when it's slippery out.
I think Ozzie had a wonderful birthday!

Yay for new compression wraps (finally!) and new dresses!

Date: 2025-02-26 03:59 pm (UTC)(I don't know whether to laugh or be scandalized that they didn't hide the costume, lol!
To be fair, while I did find the situation amusing, it was bad that it wasn't put away. I mean, leaving it just propped in the foyer was a pretty big fail. It was impossible not to see poor upside down Dougie.
I was so called out by Rosie, I wouldn't have dared not use the extra weights after that! *g*
Finally is right, I can't believe how long it took this time.

Date: 2025-02-27 06:39 pm (UTC)Metabolism and how it works or not is a strange and fascinating topic! It must have been very heartening to hear that the damage from yo-yo dieting can be mended.
All hail the three level steps, your Nemesis :-D
Hooray for being able to walk and talk even when going uphill!
That's excellent news about your wraps!
I'm keeping my fingers crossed James will soon be well enough to be discharged from physio!
Congratulations to your charity shop finds! (Very strange that they don't have a fitting room!)
You already have daffodils, I'm so envious! We don't even have crocuses yet.

It really is. The email covering the session is usually sent on a Friday and I fully intend to do some reading when it arrives, as half an hour wasn't really enough to take in everything and completely understand.
Those three level steps are totally my nemesis! Evil things.
It was excellent news about the wraps, and the walking :)
Every time James goes to physio I expect it to be the last time, but he's still not got full strength back yet. Not that it's a bad appointment to go to or anything, it would just be nice to put the whole accident behind us.
I don't understand the lack of a fitting room at all, especially in such a big shop.
Yeah, quite a few daffodils too, and crocuses, sorry!

Date: 2025-03-08 03:02 pm (UTC)Wow, I want to go thrift shopping with you! I went out yesterday for that but nothing called to me.
Congrats on your hill climb!! It's so great to have a point of comparison like that. I was talking to K the other day that I think my exercise lately has increased my endurance for going out and about - not necessarily physically bc that was fine and remains fine, but mentally, it's like maybe I can go to three stores in a day and not be overwhelmed and then hibernate for 2 days?? amazing. (That being said, still do hibernate the rest of the day lololol) Also LOL ROSIE, she sounds so terrible and great giving you the eye :D

That's a fantastic result for you, too. Gold stars for us both!
Rosie is both terrible and great, she's fantastic at pushing, but in a way you don't really mind.
