turpsI've just been reading that Lauren Lee Smith who plays Emma in Mutant X has left the show. Now I have to admit that she's my least favourite character, but damn, she's part of Mutant X, they can't just go and get someone else!
Well, I know they can, but still...
I'm scared about what they're going to do about my show. I know most people don't understand why I love it so, but I do. What scares me is in the announcement Lauren hints that lots of things are going to change.
Season 1 MX was awesome. I adored Brennan in it. He looked great, was bolshy but had a sensitive side. My all time favourite scene is in Lit Fuse when he's walking through Sanctuary reading Walt Whitman poems, Then in the break it was announced that season2 was going to be darker. They changed how Sanctuary looked, and the characters. Brennan cut his hair!!! They basicly dumbed him down and changed his character. At times I wanted to slap him as he came out with more and more chauvinistic stuff. He was made into the stereotypical alpha male. I still loved him, but more because of what he used to be. Same with all the others, they all were more bitter and looked scruffy. But maybe the worst thing, they kept pushing that Shalimar and Brennan were attracted to one another. Can't they see that Bren's Jesse's?
Now I'm so afraid what they're going to do. I'm thinking there'll be a new female mutant and she's bound to be a love interest.
I just want filming to start so I know what the hell they're going to do with my show.

Date: 2003-07-07 11:09 pm (UTC)I ranted forever about how much I hated what they did to season 2, but what really irked me the most was that the team didn't have much camaderie and the mixing/matching among the members were gone. I miss the Brennan/Jesse banter (that totally awakened the slasher beast in me), and the only times they were together, the air was wrapped in animosity. And I totally agree with you, Terri. I for one didn't like Brennan too much, but I always appreciated the sort of fun smart-alecky attitude he brought into the team. Season 2 Brennan was just too macho-chauvinistic and too holier than thou for no apparent reason.
Nevertheless, bring on season 3! I can't for the life of me figure out why I love this show so much, but then who can explain obsessions anyway? ;)

I agree. The writers drove me insane last season on so many levels. Every character got shafted in some way, some more than others. You read what I said about Brennan, he was turned into a macho jerk, and i know you probably think he was that in season 1 too, but I really think he had much more depth in the first season. Like I said, I adore his character, but at times I wanted to slap him one. And his clothes, did he get them from a bin or something? Jesse I could weep for. Never have I seen a character so ignored. It was a disgrace how much time he was given, nothing more than a background character. I've discussed this with other people, and they say I'm being fair minded as Jesse isn't my favourite character so I shouldn't care. Well that's rubbish. MX is about the team, and Jesse is part of that. Then the time that he did have they made him bitter and at times stupid. Would he really phase from a prison cell leaving Brennan behind? Hard Time was full of stupid mistakes from them both.
But back to Emma, (I have a bad habit of being side tracked by the men *g* )In season 1 I hated her, she was little Miss Mary Sue, but last season, her character did develop. I loved when she forced Adam to tell what he knew in Lest he Become. She was certainly going darker, and that was great. Typical that she's left when it looked so promising.

Agree again. They pushed Bren/Shal far too hard, it was cringe worthy at times. See this is why I understand why so many people hate Brennan's character, doesn't mean I like it and I get *very* annoyed on his behalf but I understand it. Suddenly from season 1 we went from having a team to what was the Brennan and Shalimar show. Yes, they're both in your face, the alpha characters as it were, but that doesn't mean the rest have to lose out. I mourn the banter too. Brennan and Jesse were *friends* slash aside they liked one another, they snarked sure, but you knew they'd do anything for one another. I just don't get that in S2. Some conflict in the team is to be expected, but I hate that these two ended up niggling and fighting mostly.

That's when I fell in love with his character. In The Shock of the New he was confident, wise cracking and yeah fun. I would have loved him as a friend. He pretty much kept that up for most of the season, there were some relapses but all the characters had those so it wasn't a problem.
I still think his character could be great, his backstory is good, but they amped all his bad characteristics until I wanted to strangle him at times. Yes I can justify why he did what he did. He's mega protective and that could have been an asset, instead he was written as the ultimate chauvinist. I liked that he questioned Adam, Adam needs to be questioned, but again they went too far.
There was no reason given why he suddenly changed over the break, but then again this was the show that changed Sanctuary and didn't mention it.
Nevertheless, bring on season 3! I can't for the life of me figure out why I love this show so much, but then who can explain obsessions anyway? ;)
You've read my mind I think *g* The writing sucks, they treat the characters terribly, you get mocked for admitting you like the show. But like you I say 'bring on season 3' I might be expecting them to mess up even more. I hate the thought of watching without Emma, but you just know that I'll watch every second. Then watch again lol
