Reading my mail and I see a link to <A HREF="http://wwwsshe.murdoch.edu.au/intersections/issue9/mclelland.html"<this>this</A>

This guy joined a list I'm on for Paris/Kim in the Voyager fandom. He wrote this article and used people's posts, word for word. He even put spelling mistakes in with sic after. What he didn't do is tell anyone that he was doing that. Just joined the list for a few months, copied what he wanted and wrote this article.

There's just something so wrong about that. He doesn't use names or handles but when you post to a mailing list you don't expect your words to be copied and used again. Actually, later he does use handles when he talks of Torch's and Bingly's stories.

He's also copied parts of slashfic stories to use as examples as he talks about the Paris/Kim relationship.

Also, I could do without yet another study on slash fans and how all these het woman are out to show TPTB that the characters are gay and what prompts them to do what they do.

I'm a slasher because I find the idea of two men together incredibly erotic. That's not just sex, seeing two men holding hands gives me the wibbles. I've never sat and wondered <b>why</B> I like what I do, I just do, and that's enough for me. If people want to study slash, fine, but at least be upfront about it.

You're right, it is wrong. But experience has taught me that anything I say on any list *can* be posted anywhere else, and just might be. So, my advice (for what it's worth) is to never say anything that you don't want someone else to know/see.

At the very least, I would complain to his (the researcher's) university. I would have everyone on the list complain. I am not sure if there is anything that you can do, but at the very least, it will show that he (the researcher) (may) have a habit of not giving full disclosure.

Bastards.

It's good advice, I just hate that it needs to be said. Maybe I'm too naive but I always thought that your words should be 'yours', not copied and posted to places you never expected them to go. I thought it was bad when I saw my stories posted at an archive I'd never agreed they could go to. But for posts/e-mails to be copied, that goes too far.

The listmom is organising a complaint now, getting all those who were quoted, had story parts posted and pictures lifted from web sites to contact her. I think the guy is going to get a complaint about his practices, but from the sound of him I doubt he'll care.

Bastards
Couldn't have put it better myself.

I do too. :(

It's a dirty rotten trick, there's no denying it.

My sister's roommate, M? Someone stole her whole website. No damn kidding. They stole it, then cut it up (cutting off her webpage/copyright info) and then posted it all to a list that M is on, taking credit for it. What rubbish! The person got in trouble with the listperson, and gave an apology to M, but damn, that's not enough, in my mind.

But for posts/e-mails to be copied, that goes too far.

All of it is wrong.

Good. Will you let me know what happens?

No, but the University might!

That's unbelievable! Everyone that has a website know how hard you work on them. For someone to come along and do that is disgusting. An apology seems such an inadequate punishment.

Reading stuff like that reminds me that that fandom can be a hard place at times.

Sure. I'm interested in what he says when he gets a real complaint too.
