Apr. 15th, 2007 09:42 amOur trip to the beach didn't go as expected last night.
First we broke down on the sliproad onto the duel carriageway. Thankfully it was the sliproad because man, those cars were flying past at a horrific speed. As it was our car nearly got swiped a few times by people not looking forward as they filtered into the main traffic. One person stopped the whole time we were there, a woman saying she'd take Corey and me to the next town. But we stayed put, and I tell you, after spending almost an hour sitting on a bank at the roadside I was damn happy to see the RAC van appear.
After that we headed off to pick up the MiL and FiL. They live close to the coast and as we neared their town we saw thick blankets of fog rolling towards us. By the time we got to the sea it was so foggy you couldn't see a thing. But we stayed a while, watching Corey dig on a foggy beach.
Then when we'd dropped them off and were heading home I saw what at first looked like a bundle of rags in the road. Driving closer I saw it was a person, curled on their side and lying on the floor. They were lying in a filthy alley and I knew I couldn't just leave them there. The thing was, I didn't want to approach them either. James' parents live in a rough town, and this was a dark alley behind the shops and I could have approached and ended up with a knife to the leg, but at the same time, that was a person lying there. In the end we phoned the police and stayed close until they arrived, but man, I still feel kind of guilty about not doing more.
So that was our trip to the coast. We're heading out again soon. A meeting at the rugby club first as they're thinking of disbanding the mini teams, then we're taking the FiL, MiL and my mam to Whitby. This is either going to be a great day or one that'll leave me wanting to bash my head against a brick wall. Fingers crossed it'll be the first.
ETA: Mam just phoned and said she can't go. Colour me unsurprised.

Date: 2007-04-15 08:56 am (UTC)I think you did much more than most people would have done, Terri, so no need to feel guilty. Just 'not ignoring' that person was a lot more than people would do on a good day.
Here's to hoping the day won't leave you wanting to bash your head against a brick wall *fingers crossed too*

Date: 2007-04-15 03:06 pm (UTC)I agree that you did the absolute right thing in calling the police. A lot of people would not have done that. Even if you had approached him and not been hurt, what could you really have done? The police were definitely the way to go.

Date: 2007-04-16 12:04 pm (UTC)You're right, there wasn't a thing I could do if I'd approached. It just seemed wrong to just sit there. Still, I do know it's all I could do.

Date: 2007-04-15 03:36 pm (UTC)And You did a lot more than most would do when they discovered it was a person lying there. And I'm glad you didn't approach them yourself. Granted they could have just been hurt or something like that, but today, it's not worth the risk of finding out.
I used to always give what little bit of cash I had to the people standing on the side of the roads asking for help, but after there was a news report about a woman getting shot by one of those people, I don't even look at them any more. And I know some of them are just working the racket, but there are a few that really need the help and I still feel bad when I am sitting at a stop light trying to ignore them.
But, better safe than sorry, and you guys did hang around to make sure the police showed up after you called them!

Date: 2007-04-16 12:00 pm (UTC)I understand totally why you feel bad about not giving money to the people asking for help I'm like you, I want to help but you hear so many worrying things, and sad as it is, you have to make that choice to not approach.
How are you, honey? You feeling better now?

Date: 2007-04-15 04:16 pm (UTC)(and unless you're trained in first aid, the balance between what you could do by being closer by, and what you did by calling for help and keeping watch to make sure the situation didn't worsen seems like a good call to me)
Here's hoping today's a good day

Date: 2007-04-15 08:54 pm (UTC)Today, however, has been fab! I was catching crabs with my boys, chucking a hand line out near the big sailing ship, and pulling up crabs that we plopped into a bucket. The crabs were hanging onto bits of squid, though those had eyes and ick! so they weren't getting hooks in them and we threw them back in when we were done, and it was just cool!
Now I'm all sun warm and a good tired.
