There's been a weather warning here today, and sure enough our gate has just blown off, and it looks likely the fence will follow. Not a small fence either, but our 6 foot back garden fence. It means Tex can't go outside on his own and anyone can just walk into our garden. Not that there's anything worth stealing, not unless they want to take the swing.

The main problem is going to be the cost to get it fixed, as the insurance doesn't cover weather. Hopefully it won't be that much for the posts etc as my brother will do the actual work.

Earlier I was listening to the news and it seems Sean Johnson is having a testimonial match. Now, no one will know Sean, but he used to play for the Durham Wasps, my hockey team. The one that was cruelly uprooted, renamed and transplanted to Newcastle. The Wasps were such a huge part of my life when I was a teen, which meant Sean was a huge part of my life. He's a local lad, and him and his two brothers all played for us.

Some other old Wasps players are also taking part, Mike Blaisedell, Ivor Bennet, and some old Whitley Warriors, our hated derby team. Thing is, I vowed never to set foot in that Wasps stealing arena, and I never have. I miss hockey so much sometimes, the chill in the air, the old wooden benches, the sheer danger of watching a hockey game at a rink that didn't have plexi glass or nets at the side. Yes, I was hit by the puck a few times, yes, it hurt. I haven't seen a game live in years, I can't afford to see a game even if I wanted to, and know if I did see a game that itch would return. The game is also on Thursday night, the day before I go away.

But man, I want to go so bad.

The Wasps! Feels like a long time since I heard you mention them. I'm pretending you still have your Wasps icon to go that with entry *g*

I so wish you could go there!

Though, dude, a hockey game with no plexi glass or nets at the side of the rink? I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to try it!

ETA Dude, you cheated! You used a different icon when I read the entry for the first time lol

I do have my icon! I just went and rotated it in!

I wish I could go too. There's a thousand good reasons why I can't, still. It doesn't help.

Well, the no nets or plexi glass was at Durham in the early years that I attended. They actually got nets by the end, and real seats. No more sitting on boards *g*

Our rink was one of the worst out there, the floor buckled, the boards were wet and cold, the roof leaked, yet the Wasps were the best team in the league for a long time :)

Hee, editing to your edit. I went and changed my icon after I posted. It needed the right icon I felt *g*

Me too :)

It pains me when I go to Durham and see the old rink. Why they couldn't just create their own team in Newcastle I'll never understand. But no, they wanted ours.

I gave the Wasps a good ten years of my life. A season ticket holder for the vast majority of those. Trips to Wembley and matches away. Being caught shouting on tv when we won the Castle Eden Cup yet again, being all giggly when I was an early teen and getting autographs off all the players. I still have hundreds of autographed programmes in my bedroom.

But I'll stop rambling now.

An arena with no nets or plexiglass? o_O and no lawsuits?
This is gonna sound like a silly question, but is hockey fairly popular in your country? I know so little about sports in the UK that aren't soccerfootball.

Well, they did get nets by the end, but for a long time they only had nets behind each goal, nothing at the sides. As I sat in the front row it was a little dangerous.

Hockey is still classed as a minor sport here. The top level league has 11 teams, and the most supporters any of them has is around 9,000. It is growing though, when I was an active supporter Durham used to pull in 1,000 fans a game, and we were the top team for many years.

But compared to football, rugby, cricket etc, hockey is a drop in the ocean.
