Camp Sparkle, YAY!
Mar. 8th, 2008 07:33 pmI've been sitting a while wondering how to recap Camp Sparkle, and honestly, even if I were the best writer in the world I couldn't even attempt to convey how much I loved the last week.
Camp Sparkle is special, and I don't think you can understand how special unless you're there, but I'll try, even if the report is bound to be really disjointed.
James drove me to
nopseuds house on the Friday morning. Once there hugs were exchanged because man, it had been a year since I'd seen her, and that was so wrong. The amount of stuff that needed packing into the car was astounding, but somehow
archie_gremlin managed and I was packed into the back seat, ready to be chauffeured to Camp Sparkle *g*
Of note here, this was the first time nerves hadn't attacked before a fannish meet up. Which was such a welcome change.
So, we set off and listened to appropriate sparkly music. Then got stuck in a traffic jam for what seemed like forever. I tell you, when the van drivers get out and start chatting on the road side you know it's a bad sign. But, eventually we arrived at the cottage, and man, it was great. Two huge rooms downstairs, a kitchen table that could have easily seated 30 people, a massive living room with 5 couches and a projector. Footage beamed onto the white wall. So awesome! I especially liked the black leather couch at the top of the steps down to the room proper. From there I could sit and reign over the rest ;)
We put the food away, then people arrived! They arrived in groups over the next hour or so, and oh man. I'd missed them all so much. So much. Because while Camp Sparkle is about the popboys, in actuality the main thing for me is getting to see friends, awesome people who I enjoy and love a lot.
I was rooming with
ephemera_pop and
ninjetti75. The room itself was small for having three beds in it, one of them a double, but that was fine, we were all friends, plus within a few days A left and Josh moved so I had the room to myself.
You know, this is going to take forever if I go day by day, so have some highlights.
Eating at that huge table. 20 people chatting and eating and pitching in to clean up at the end.
Watching footage in the living room. Atlantis, Pop OD, Around the World, Reel Nsync, music vids, making ofs, scarring baby!backstreet. So much, watching with people that get it.
Sneaking off for bandom watching sessions with Saff, Saba and Turlough. Panic concert and Life on the Murder Scene. Which we managed twice over the week. Sadly I didn't manage to convert Turlough to the Mikeyway.
Playing Crudeo many times, with the added rule that whoever won had to write that story. Which is why I have a year to write a Choey story where Chris and Joey wake up gay on a pirate ship.
Sitting at the kitchen table one day and suddenly realising Rikes was threading sparkly things into my hair. I ended up with paper umbrellas and insane fluffy things that stuck out the top of my head like antennas. So much so when I caught sight of my shadow like that I double took *g*
Sitting in my bedroom with A and Josh, chatting about stuff until really late.
The reading of the lava lamp story by KC. Us all knowing how bad the story is, steeled for every approaching bad line.
The new five word story, which led to Howie's steed! STEED!
The hugs. I know it's not for everyone, but I love hugs, the fact I could be sitting and someone would rest their head on my shoulder or sneak an arm around my shoulder and man, I miss that so much. Probably the most of everything.
The goat felching, a conversation that started and just got more and more insane, with each innocent person who walked into the room being asked about goat felching.
The snack table. Or to be correct, table plus top of cupboard. The amount of chocolate and sweets people brought was insane! Twinkies, swiss chocolate, pop rocks, reeses cups, hersheys kisses, pixi stixs. It was. Wow. It was impossible to ever go hungry from lack of sugar.
Going to Winchester Cathedral and after hearing school visits usually get the kids to link hands around one of the supports to see how big it is, KC deciding we needed to know how many slashers it took to encircle it too. So we held hands and hugged the column. It took a lot of us.
As a group, doing the Bye Bye Bye hand movement whenever anyone had to leave :(
Making a tunnel with waving jazz hands which Saba, Josh and Turlough had to walk through when they left yesterday. Yes, we were rather visible to watching people, but laughter is good when you're all misted up.
Going to bed in the early hours, and brushing my teeth to the sound of laughter from the kitchen below.
Delicious food cooked by Pen and Nopseud
Playing a rpg with Lucy and Josh. My first ever and they were both so patient and understanding despite me not knowing what I was doing at all. Which led to Joey and his RIB SPREADERS OF DOOM!
So much talking and listening. I love that so much. I'm not really the best talker myself, but still. Sitting at the table, grazing from the snack table and chatting about everything under the sun was great, even if I did end up with a ridge in my ass. Padded seats next time I think!
Sadly we didn't get to see Harry and Max, but we did discuss how the tragic foreskin accident could have occurred.
We also discussed how AJ's balls could have ended up lopsided. More than once even. I think the conclusion was a tragic accident with a windmill at a mini golf course.
At one point I was apparently blamed for popslash. Which yeah, go me \o/
Going to the pub, and them opening a room for us out back. I wonder why? *g*
The pub at Winchester, which had a juke box! Meaning BSB and Justin songs. Not that anyone sung along...ahem.
There was so much more. It was a week of crack, sugar, sparkle, joy, squee, friendship and just awesomeness.
I saw Mette do this, and as I like the idea, have totally stolen it.
nopseud remains one of the coolest people ever and I love her brain. She looks so professional in her white beautician coat complete with fluffy slippers. Is wickedly funny, organised, giving and her joy at the Dancing on Ice result was wonderful to see.
pensnest is fantastic to talk to. She's funny, can direct a great conversation, makes the most amazing food, drove the mini bus so well and managed to herd many popslashers at once without losing one. That takes skill for sure! She also has an amazing husband who was a total star.
urbanoceanix is so amazing. She makes fluffy cushions, and knows so much about tv. She's just this amazingly cool person who laughs often and is always prepared to chat about so many things. She also has the best socks ever!
iconis Oh, Outi. I love her so much. I don't even have the words to say how much. She's everything you could want in a friend gives the best hugs ever and I miss her so much.
trumpeterofdoom JM, she's just damn cool. Smart, enthusiastic and knows so much about BSB. I tell you, if you want to know anything about those boys, ask JM, she'd know. I just wish she didn't have to had gone home early *sadface*
rikes She's cracked in the most subtle of ways. I love talking to her because she's this delicious mix of someone grown up but also wildly amusing in the best of ways. Her dedication to the JuC cause is amazing to see too, I especially like her technique of waiting until people were in the mini bus then making them promise to write for JuC day, because they can't escape *g*
adelate Noora is just adorable and so damn pretty! I enjoyed playing Crudeo with her, and laughing often, she'll always be the best kind of person. She was also so funny with her Winchester glee :D
_ducks Abi, what can I say? She's just adorable! Always helping however she can, and grinning away as she adds some more devious cracked out words to the story. Her Kevin phobia is a source of great amusement too. Kevin loves you, Abi!
ephemera_pop. Is the best friend a person could ever have. I'm so lucky to have her in my life, and I would have travelled a thousand times further to see her. She's made of happiness, rainbows and love.
turloughishere. Despite her sad lack of taste in bandom men, Turlough remains made of awesome. Watching My Chem with her was so cool and she let me read her printed fic. Which led to a really late night one day. Like, birds singing long. She can also moderate a discussion like a pro, and is just cool.
saba1789 Saba is awesome. She's so loving and can make you feel loved and cherished just by being close. Being near Saba means being hugged by Saba, and I think she's one of the most adorable and wonderful people in the world.
msktrnanny You know what sucks? That someone so amazing as KC lives so far away. When we talk she always listens, and she has all these ideals that she sticks to but while doing so never makes you feel bad if you don't feel the same way. She's just fantastic and she reads to me. Takes the time to read for however long that story is, and that's such a fantastic thing. There's a thousand things I love about KC. She's just that kind of person.
kira_j She was one of our newbies, and she fit in so well! She needs to post more because she's adorable, funny, and just plain wonderful. She also lives near me! Can you believe it? A popslasher so close!
fadedsouls is the other person I didn't know. Not that that stopped me giving her a hug. In fact, I lurked near the door and gave everyone hugs as they came in. I'm sneaky like that. But yes, she's cute as a button and I hope to get to speak to her more some time.
saffronra Sadly Saff couldn't stay long, but we had a lovely time watching bandom footage, and sharing that glee was so awesome! I want her to stay longer next time *pouts like baby!Justin*
randomling I'd never met Lucy before, but that didn't matter at all. It was like meeting an old friend. I laughed so much while talking to her. She's just. Well she's just the best. Funny, smart, giving, patient, all the good things you want in a person. She's brimming with story ideas and her love for our boys is sky high. I'm just thrilled she's one of the brit popslashers, because that means we'll meet again before next year.
ninjetti75 There's a reason Josh is one of my oldest online friends, and that's because he's one of the most talented, wonderful, people I know. He goes above and beyond at all times, and I love him for that, so very much. He's just Josh, I don't think you could ever really get across how cool he is.
bubbleforest Dude, I suck and totally forgot Mette. Which is unforgivable because she's just the most beautiful person, inside and out. Listening to her laughter was one of the highlights of the weekend for me, and she's just made of awesome, sunshine, rainbows and puppies.
If you go to
sparklyukfans other recap links are being posted, and keep an eye out for the 5 word story. Steed!
Huge thanks go to Nopseud and Pen who organised the best week ever. If you think this sounds like fun, start saving for next year. Because using the word of the week, Camp Sparkle. It was AWESOME!

Not Swiss I'm pretty sure. Swedish and Norwegian and Finnish and German and English and American and there might also have been some Danish, but no Swiss that I can remember.
Making a tunnel with waving jazz hands which Saba, Josh and Turlough had to walk through when they left yesterday.
Now you're making me miss everyone again! *sniffles a little*
At one point I was apparently blamed for popslash.

Your summing-up of everyone's just as fabulous as Mette's!!!
Despite her sad lack of taste in bandom men
