I've had the best weekend. It was my 4th Connotations con, and they just keep getting better. Cool panels, being around people that get it, watching new stuff on the big screen, Middleman ♥ Watching new SPN with lots of other fans is ftw. Merlin on the big screen then off to watch the new episode in a hotel room. Nice food, the magical registration desk with constantly appearing junk food and chocolate. Squeaky plastic ducks everywhere. Talking fic over breakfast, dinner, everywhere.
The highlight though, meeting
castalie and
yami_tai. I've known Mouse for years now, well before we joined LJ, yet we'd never met. And you know, I'm so horribly awkward around new people, but it felt like I'd known them both forever. Tai is awesome too, and really, I've been so incredibly lucky to spend the weekend in the company of two wonderful ladies.
Also, we won the quiz! Woo! The fact that it took 5 of us joining up to do so shall not be mentioned again
James was at the con this year too, and he enjoyed himself. He didn't go to any panels but did like hanging out in the main room and watching the big screen.
If you ever get a chance to go to
connotations I say go for it. Because the ladies that organise the whole thing do an amazing job.
The not so good. As I mentioned before this was my 4th time, and each time there's been issues with the hotel. It's sad, but going I expect the Park Hotel to suck in some way, and they did, and . It started small. We went to our room and it was overlooking the metro line. Which was fine, the location of the hotel means someone has to, but there was no nets or blinds, just a window which could be seen into easily by people on the train and in the flats opposite. A call down to reception and we came back later that night to find out two nails had been hammered into the window frame and a net hung on them. The tv didn't work and the remote was bust completely. James told them this twice, but they never bothered sending someone to fix it.
This was the big one. Yesterday James sat on the toilet and it fell off the wall. It was just after he'd got up so he didn't have his leg on, and ended up pinned to the floor by the toilet with water flowing everywhere. He also landed on his arm, which was a really bad thing. He managed to get up, tried to phone reception because of the water and the fact he'd really hurt himself. No one picked up. Phoned over and over, still no one picked up. In the end I had to go down myself, to find the receptionist was having to help serve breakfast.
She went up to the room to see if he needed medical help, he said no, he'd just go to our hospital who knew about his operation. She said she would call the hotel repairman but didn't have the number. Meanwhile a handyman came by, handed James a bucket to catch the water then left. He didn't even come into the room.
I don't blame the receptionist, she was trying to do far too much on her own. The handyman I feel bitter about. Of course there was no manager available, but he's supposed to be in touch today. I don't hold up much hope him actually calling us.
James went to the walk in center after we came home. Basically the bone in his hand had been separated as part of his operation, by falling like he did the bone had slammed into the tissue of his arm, close to actually popping through the skin. It's really swollen and bruised, and now he just has to hope it doesn't get infected.
Summing up. Connotations, very much of the win. Park Hotel, fail.

Date: 2008-10-06 11:36 am (UTC)As for the hotel, it sounds as though you should write an extremely stern letter to the manager and to the owners - is the Park Hotel part of a chain? In addition to the fact that the service was very poor indeed (however much you were paying it was too much!), James has been injured due to the crappy maintenance of the hotel, and that is outrageous. I would say you have a strong case for some compensation. Get a medical report, and tell the hotel you want to be compensated for James' injury and reimbursed for your stay.

Date: 2008-10-06 02:23 pm (UTC)We waited to see what the manager would say when he called. From what I understand he's passed the whole matter to the health and safety person from the hotel, who's supposedly going to call tomorrow.
I really think they're going to be difficult about this. But we have pictures and documentation from the hospital last night and a letter will be sent if they try and fob us off. Which they will, it's that kind of place.

I've been getting into Middleman too!

Date: 2008-10-06 02:30 pm (UTC)But yeah, fun was still had. The actual con itself was a blast.
Middleman is such fun! I watched about 4 episodes on the big screen, then someone burned the rest for me :)

Date: 2008-10-06 12:51 pm (UTC)I still can't believe we won the quizz lol Guess team work is the way to go, eh?
Also, yes, the rooms didn't exactly impress me. Still, the part of the hotel was held, the restaurant, the lounge, everything else was just great. Still, no real love for the rooms. Nor the way they handled things with you and James. I can't believe the way they reacted! Or not, as the case may be.
Summing up. Connotations, very much of the win. Park Hotel, fail.
Perfect summary!

Date: 2008-10-06 02:43 pm (UTC)Hee. I could have fell from my chair when they announced we'd won. Obviously 5 heads are better than, well, 3.
The bedrooms weren't that good at all, and yours was much better than ours. So that'll show you what ours was like. We had no pictures on the wall, and the headboard for the bed was obviously recycled from a bigger bed as there was a big gap between the side of the bed and the attached table.
Still, you're right. The actual con parts were great. And some of the staff were lovely.
Which on balance, has to be more of a win. Especially as there's so many moments that I'll remember for a long time. Like the silence at the end of SPN.

Date: 2008-10-06 01:47 pm (UTC)I'm really not surprised by the response from the hotel, though. They're made of fail through and through. I've pretty much decided I'm not going to Connotations again so long as it's held there.

Date: 2008-10-06 02:46 pm (UTC)It hasn't been said officially but I suspect they may be moving elsewhere next year. There is going to be a Connotations, but unlike other years no venue was announced.
Fingers crossed it's on the move.

LOL!
It's really swollen and bruised, and now he just has to hope it doesn't get infected.
That's awful, I was really hoping that he hadn't hurt it too much. Good luck with getting compensation from the hotel. Fingers crossed next year's con will be held somewhere else.

O_O Was Pecker and his multitude of cousins invited??!!
It's too awful about James' accident though. What a shocking thing to happen at a hotel and then not really getting any help. They ought to both reimburse you for the room AND pay compensation. Grrrr!!! I do hope it won't become infected! *sends lots of good and healthy thoughts to James*

They were giving out orange plastic ducks with the con pack. Why I have no idea. The things were everywhere!
Well, since I wrote the hotel manager has called again and asked what he could do to put a line under the situation. Which I translate as him being worried about us making a fuss and suing.

I'm shocked at the complete lack of concern shown by everyone but the receptionist. They gave you a bucket instead of moving you to a new room? Wow.
I hope James is okay.
