Reading comments I saw someone had sent me a PM.

Going to my message center I found out that I had quite a few in there, including important stuff and feedback on fic.

I was sure I'd set it up to email me if I got a PM, and in fact had been notified in the past, but when I got there the notify by email box was sort of faded out.

Does anyone have any idea why that's happened?

Don't you see the messages when you log in? I do get emails when I get something, and then it shows Message (1) in bold at the top of the login page (for me). Did you change your profile or something?

I usually don't log out, but I just have and no, there was no bolded number on my profile when I logged in. I have no idea what's up.

Probably depends on which site scheme you're using. If it's not the new one (horizon/vertigo), then you can't see it:

But I think you'll be fine with just re-ticking that box. :)

I've changed to horizon, and it now says I have 1999 messages.

Well, that's the problem. It is ticked but is also greyed out and not in use. It's a puzzle for sure.

Whoa, that's going to take a while to go through!

I just checked, and the box is greyed out for me too, but I'm still getting the notifications. Make sure the box on the right ("also notify me by email") is also ticked.

Well, they're were just comment dupes, but I managed to delete them all anyway.

Hmmm, it makes me feel better your box is greyed too. I'll try ticking the other.

I think I've solved the mystery of why that box is greyed out! It's probably because the choice if you're going to accept those messages, and from whom you'll accept them, is set on the Edit Profile page (http://www.livejournal.com/manage/profile/) under "Contact Info". So the only thing you can do on the Manage Comments page is decide HOW you want those messages. It's a bit strange that they've split it like that though.

That's been happening to me too - that LJ doesn't email me they're there. LJ isn't emailing me comments lately either.

Do you have a lot of notifications set? I seem to remember reading something somewhere about there being problems with the settings when you have over a certain amounts of notifications set, but I might be mixing it up with something else. I think you should probably open a support request in any case 'cause the greyed out tickybox for mail doesn't sound right at all.

I did, but I've just gone in and deleted a lot of them.

It's just annoying more than anything, having private messages there, important ones, and I didn't respond because I wasn't aware of them.

I've never opened a support request before. But I think I will.

It's so difficult to remember to check the inbox when you use your own customised entry pages! Even when I put a link to it in my navigation link list I tended to forget, so for the last few months I've tried to remember to ALWAYS look in the inbox the first thing I do when I open LJ every day and it seems like I've finally managed to make it into a habit *knocks on wood*
